Both regular and enhanced seats will be available for selection at booking, starting in 2025 for flights in early 2026, Southwest said. Southwest AirlinesSouthwest has already announced an improved cabin with tablet holders, charging ports, upgraded overhead bins, and better WiFi. The cabin improvements come as Southwest plans to cut some short-haul flying in favor of more lucrative long-haul operations. Southwest left four airports altogether in August: Bellingham International Airport in Washington, Mexico's Cozumel International Airport, Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York. This means Icelandair passengers can connect in the US on Southwest flights, and vice versa.

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea has been forced to repeatedly shut down runways at the two main airports for the capital, Seoul, since June due to disruption from trash-carrying balloons launched by North Korea, a South Korean lawmaker said Wednesday, citing aviation data. North Korea has launched more than 5,500 balloons with bags of trash attached to them since late May, saying it was responding to balloons carrying propaganda leaflets flown by South Korean activists. The balloons are carried by wind and some have dropped in the South, including near the presidential office and on airport runways. On June 26, Incheon airport runways were closed for a total of 166 minutes, the most over 24 hours, according to aviation data released by Yang’s office. On Monday, the military said it was ready to take “stern military action” if it believed the North had “crossed the line,” but declined to elaborate.

CNN —The US government is “intensely tracking” an ongoing threat by Iran against current and former US officials, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday. Read previewThe FAA has opened an investigation after two passengers were injured when a United Airlines plane responded to an alert from a midair collision system. AdvertisementThe FAA said in a statement that the flight responded to an onboard alert about another aircraft in the vicinity. The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) helps prevent midair collisions by monitoring the surrounding airspace and alerting pilots about nearby aircraft. The system sounds an alarm in the cockpit, and the pilots notify the air traffic controller that they are responding to a TCAS alarm, Kevin Karpé, a former air traffic controller and air traffic manager, previously told Business Insider. However, last year, concerns rose about a spike in the number of collision close calls taking place in the US.

Found Golf Balls CEO Shaun Shienfield, whose company recovers and resells millions of lost balls across the US and Canada each year, told CNN that he gauged the average to be between three and four each round. Using Shienfield’s low estimate, that’s over 1.5 billion balls lost in the US every year since 2020. “While precise global estimates are challenging … the worldwide figure could easily exceed 3 to 5 billion golf balls lost each year,” Petersen told CNN. Mitchell Schols, founder of Canada-based Biodegradable Golf Balls, put a “very conservative” estimate for North America at one million balls lost to oceans annually. One UK-based man told CNN in 2015 that he could earn up to £100,000 (about $114,000) annually by diving to retrieve golf balls from lakes on golf courses.

I ended up having to wear clothes from the gift shop and wash my undergarments in a sink. The largest and heaviest bags are sometimes left behind and brought in on a later flight. Since the lodge's laundry service had a too-long turnaround time, I had to wash my underwear and socks in the sink with a hotel soap bar. Boeing 737-790 aircraft belonging to Alaska Airlines is seen flying at Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, United States on July 2, 2024. Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines can go through with their planned merger, but they must maintain the value of their airline reward systems and preserve several key routes, the U.S. Department of Transportation said Tuesday. The two carriers' $1.9 billion merger agreement cleared the U.S. Justice Department's review last month. That put it in the hands of the Transportation Department, which must also review airline mergers. The Department of Transportation noted that the airlines can begin the process of closing the merger, but still need approval for a transfer application, which allows them to combine and operate international routes under one certificate.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe aviation industry still sees so-called "sustainable aviation fuel" (SAF) as the only viable way to meet its decarbonization targets, even as opposition and the potential for higher costs for passengers pose obstacles to the fast-growing sector. SAF is a broad term describing fuel that is burned by an aircraft engine, but instead of using kerosene is derived from more sustainable sources. The planemaker said it is collaborating with producer HIF Global on the development of methane-based fuels, and investing in alcohol-to-jet fuel producer LanzaJet. But IATA's own forecast for SAF production to triple in 2024 to 1.9 billion liters would cover just 0.53% of aviation fuel demand for the year. "The truth is, it's going to be more expensive, you can't really sugarcoat that," said HIF Global's Clara Bowman.
