AdvertisementSome gig work services are offering a perk usually associated with traditional jobs: retirement savings accounts with matching contributions. Alexandrea Ravenelle, an assistant professor in sociology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, told BI she would like to see gig workers classified as employees of the platforms, not independent workers. Ravenelle said a better plan would be for companies to extend similar types of retirement benefits to gig workers as employees of those companies enjoy. The Robinhood program also offers gig workers on these platforms access to free financial counseling through GreenPath Financial Wellness, a nonprofit. OpenAI is reinstating CEO Sam Altman to its board of directors and said it has “full confidence” in his leadership after the conclusion of an outside investigation into the company's turmoil. After months of investigation, it found that Altman's ouster was a “consequence of a breakdown in the relationship and loss of trust” between him and the prior board, OpenAI said in a summary of the findings Friday. The investigation found the prior board acted within its discretion. “The review concluded there was a significant breakdown in trust between the prior board, and Sam and Greg,” Bret Taylor, the board’s chair, told reporters Friday. After it retained the law firm in December, OpenAI said WilmerHale conducted dozens of interviews with the company’s prior board, current executives, advisers and other witnesses.

Altman’s return comes after an independent investigation found the board did not need to fire him in the first place. Altman in November was fired as CEO and director by the OpenAI board in a shocking dismissal of an executive who had become the face of AI in Silicon Valley. “I am excited to welcome Sue, Nicole, and Fidji to the OpenAI Board of Directors,” Taylor said in a statement. But Altman, Brockman and Sutskever in 2019 formed OpenAI LP, a for-profit entity that exists within the larger company’s structure. Altman, in the press conference, praised the company’s employees for their determination to do good work throughout its turmoil.

There's nothing like a moribund IPO market to create a pleasant backdrop for a bull run. Hot on the heels of the Reddit deal is the expiration of the IPO lockup period for Arm Holdings on March 12. I thought it might occur after the successful Arm deal, but like so many nascent attempts to revive the IPO market there was nothing worth following up with until the Reddit deal. It was never our plan to raise prices when customers are visiting us the most.”But the questions over what to call Wendy’s experiment – surge pricing? Dynamic pricing? Surge pricing refers to dynamic pricing, which is a way for businesses to charge more (or less) based on how many people want their products at any given time. “Surge pricing sent the message to everybody that this is mostly about increasing prices. “After considerable public pushback, Wendy’s is now framing their dynamic pricing strategy as discounts during off-peak times instead of surge pricing during peak times,” she wrote.

Starting last year, profitability became a more consistent story for the largest online grocery marketplace in North America, with millions of monthly active orderers and Instacart+ members. The company says it has now delivered over one billion orders across its 85,000-store network encompassing 1,500 retail partners. "There were a lot of questions about whether Instacart would be just another pandemic fad," CEO Fidji Simo told CNBC . Simo, who took the top role at the company in 2021 and launched the Instacart Health delivery service in 2022, has made health care a personal passion. "Patients often go through years-long diagnostic odysseys, bouncing around from specialist to specialist with no one looking at the whole picture," Simo wrote on her LinkedIn.

A Wisconsin Uber driver said working inconvenient hours gives him the best chance to make money. In 2022, he took home roughly $14,000 as an Uber ride-hailing driver — about $1.1 per online mile driven — according to a document viewed by BI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will be in a position to make millions after Reddit goes public, thanks to a series of bets on the online discussion board company that go back to 2014. Altman will hold 9.2% of voting power after Reddit's initial public offering, according to information in the company's prospectus. In 2014 Altman led Reddit's $50 million Series B funding round, after using the service every day for nine years, he wrote in a blog post. In the first half of 2021, Reddit was raising a Series E round, and Altman invested $50 million. He went on to say that investors in the Series B round would give 10% of shares to Reddit users.

Over the past year, Uber drivers have told Business Insider that it’s gotten harder to make money . Gridwise told BI these earnings reflected the amount drivers took home after Uber took its cut of drivers' gross earnings. The average Uber driver’s earnings before expenses declined from $29 an hour in 2022 to $25 in 2023. Meanwhile, the average Uber Eats driver’s earnings fell from roughly $20 to $18 an hour before expenses — the average driver worked 27 hours a month. While Uber drivers saw the largest year-over-year decline in monthly pay, the average driver’s $25 an-hour earnings before expenses were still higher than any other gig.

Don't expect Instacart to replace its gig worker shoppers with robots anytime soon. Instacart CEO Fidji Simo says the company can deliver faster and more efficiently using its human shoppers. That's a contrast with companies like Kroger, which have built warehouses to automate order picking. Kroger has a network of warehouses that it built with British grocer Ocado, where robots and some humans assemble orders, for instance. Human workers still drive to customers' homes to deliver the orders.
