Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on November 02, 2023 in New York City. U.S. stock futures were flat on Tuesday night after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite notched their longest winning streaks in about two years. Futures tied to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures oscillated near the flat line. Earlier in the day, the S&P 500 added 0.3% to clinch its seventh straight positive session. These gains come after about 80% of S&P 500 companies have beaten earnings estimates this season, while slowing demand means that only 59% have also topped revenue expectations.

Michelle Carder and Michael Ochs moved into a century-old Victorian home in Michigan in May 2016. AdvertisementAdvertisementVictorian homes are an alluring, lifelong love affair for Michelle Carder, who's fascinated with the era's grandeur and history. "The Victorian era was the first time in history that average people could afford to decorate their homes beautifully. The couple purchased the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home for $95,000 from an investment group that was "desperate to get rid of this thing," Carder said. AdvertisementAdvertisementMuch of those funds — $250,000, to be exact — have been poured into transforming the ho-hum Victorian home into a maximalist wonderland.

Since its 2023 lows on July 13, Humana stock rallied more than 23% compared with a roughly 7% slide in the S & P 500 over the same stretch. Management's initial commentary on 2024 earnings and Medicare Advantage membership growth — discussed in more detail below — may also have left investors wanting. Humana also expects EPS growth in 2024 to fall on the lower end of its historical long-range 11%-to-15% target. Capital allocation Humana still expects to buy back about $1.5 billion worth of stock in 2023, finance chief Diamond said on the earnings call.

I am watching the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza today and thinking about one of the world leaders I’ve most admired: Manmohan Singh. The cost of occupying Gaza could overstretch the Israeli military and economy for years to come. Israel should keep the door open for a humanitarian cease-fire and prisoner exchange that will also allow Israel to pause and reflect on exactly where it is going with its rushed Gaza military operation — and the price it could pay over the long haul. Israel built an impressive society and economy, even if flawed, and Hamas took nearly all of its resources and built attack tunnels. Results haven't been bad, but the macro is overwhelming everything, and fourth-quarter guidance is slipping. Here's a general rule for the stock market: earnings are the main determinant of stock prices in the long run, but in rare cases macro trends can overwhelm their message. Earnings are OK, but the trend is down On the surface, this looks like a good earnings season. With earnings, however, it's the trend in the forward quarter that matters: is the trend up or down? If Treasury yields stabilize or even move lower, that will be a more important factor than a slightly lower earnings environment.

We also look for a solid balance sheet with a close eye on the net debt (preferably net cash) level. Net debt is simply total debt minus cash and cash equivalents. If it is a negative number, that's a net cash position. Having a net debt position isn't a deal breaker, but we do need to ensure there are no large debts coming due on the horizon. Amazon (AMZN) is expected to have gone from a net debt position to a net cash position during the third-quarter.

But that masked a big problem for the company – weaker discretionary spending. Winnebago blamed "lower unit sales related to current market conditions and dealer efforts to reduce inventories, and higher discounts and allowances." CEO Michael Happe said "the consumer market continues to be challenged, and our fourth quarter results reflect a stubborn retail environment." By the second half of the fiscal year, though, Happe is optimistic that inventories will normalize and consumer demand will stabilize. Winnebago's stock, which was down 3% Wednesday, had fallen about 13% over the last three months, far underperforming the broader market.

REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 13 (Reuters) - UnitedHealth (UNH.N) reported a third-quarter profit on Friday ahead of analysts' estimates, helped by a lower-than-feared rise in medical costs at the company's health insurance unit. UnitedHealth's profit beat and slight raise in annual forecast set the stage for other insurers in the industry that suffered a nearly $60-billion wipeout in market value in June, on fears of a spike in medical costs. UnitedHealth said in July it expects quarterly medical costs to be "a little bit lower" sequentially. In the third quarter, the company's medical loss ratio, the percentage of spend on claims compared to premiums collected, was 82.3%, versus 83.2% in the second quarter.

The S & P 500 closed at its bear market low a year ago Thursday — ending Oct. 12, 2022, at its lowest close since November 2020 . In hindsight, that dramatic turnaround was the start of a rally that saw the S & P 500 climb 22% from the close on Oct. 12, 2022, through Wednesday. Palo Alto Networks, meanwhile, has successfully pivoted to profitability, joining the S & P 500 as a result, and repeatedly demonstrated the quality of its cybersecurity platform. Indeed, an exchange-traded fund that gives each S & P 500 constituent the same influence — the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF — has advanced only 11.2% since Oct. 12, 2022. Oct 11 (Reuters) - Humana (HUM.N) CEO Bruce Broussard will step down in the second half of 2024 after more than a decade at the helm, the insurer said on Wednesday and named healthcare veteran Jim Rechtin as his successor. Shares of the company, which grew seven-fold in value under 61-year-old Broussard, fell 2.8% to $486.4 in premarket trading. He led Humana to become the second-largest provider of Medicare Advantage in the U.S. by tripling its membership for the government-backed program to more than 5 million customers. His successor, Rechtin, will join Humana from Envision Healthcare, a U.S. provider of physicians where he is CEO and president. Broussard also helped the insurer expand beyond Medicare Advantage plans for older adults with the launch of healthcare services under the CenterWell brand in 2021.
