The new chatbot illustrates Amazon's complicated relationship with copycat items: The company forbids selling counterfeit or illegally replicated products on its platform. Amazon has warehouses full of products that don't have brand names that people would immediately recognize but might be similar to those brands' products. In theory, Rufus should be able to help — AI should help people compare similar items and answer questions about them. For now, Amazon's Rufus probably won't.

A spokesperson for the University of Pittsburgh said it “unequivocally condemns antisemitism” and will provide campus police escorts to Jewish students during the upcoming Jewish holidays. After the attack on Goodwin, two Jewish students at the University of Michigan were assaulted in separate incidents off campus. And on Friday, a group of six to eight men assaulted another Jewish student off campus at the University of Pittsburgh while using antisemitic slurs. They said there were numerous violent attacks on Palestinian, pro-Palestinian and visibly Muslim students around college campuses, as well as harassment of visibly Muslim students or students wearing keffiyehs. In New York that month, a Jewish driver struck a protester with his car at an off-campus demonstration involving Columbia students.

Mules are helping deliver supplies to North Carolina residents devastated by Hurricane Helene, according to Mountain Mule Packer Ranch. Mike Toberer told the AP he decided to bring a dozen of his mules to deliver food, water and diapers to hard-to-reach mountainous areas. The ranchers and mules “headed out” Monday morning, “and will continue to reply as quickly as possible to those in need,” his posts said. Mountain Mule Packer Ranch is located in Raeford, about 110 miles east of Charlotte and about 245 miles from Weaverville. “We have two fully loaded trucks and 20’ stock trailers heading to” western North Carolina for assistance, according to the post.

Hurricane Helene ravaged western North Carolina over the weekend, leaving behind a trail of death and devastation. North Carolina emergency crews were racing Monday to deliver food and other essential supplies to areas hit hard by Helene. At least 40 people were dead in Buncombe County, home of the thriving mountain city of Asheville, according to law enforcement officials. Photos and videos from Asheville, home to some 95,000 people, captured harrowing scenes and showed neighborhoods rendered unrecognizable by Helene’s impact. The approximately 44 people dead in North Carolina represent a third of all fatalities from the storm.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are tied among likely voters in North Carolina, while Harris holds a comfortable lead in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, according to two new CNN polls conducted by SSRS. In North Carolina, Harris and Trump stand at 48% each among likely voters. In Nebraska’s 2nd District, the so-called blue dot encompassing Omaha, Harris has 53% to Trump’s 42%, the poll finds. An 86% majority of Democratic likely voters and 69% of independent likely voters favor keeping the current system, while 69% of GOP likely voters say they’d rather move to a winner-take-all system in the state. France's BNP Paribas on Thursday said there are simply too many European lenders for the region to be able to compete with rivals from the U.S. and Asia, calling for the creation of more homegrown heavyweight banking champions. Milan-based UniCredit has ratcheted up the pressure on Frankfurt-based Commerzbank in recent weeks as it seeks to become the biggest investor in Germany's second-largest lender with a 21% stake. UniCredit, which took a 9% stake in Commerzbank earlier this month, appears to have caught German authorities off guard with the potential multibillion-euro merger. Germany's position on UniCredit's swoop has prompted some to accuse Berlin of favoring European banking integration only on its own terms.
