CrowdStrike is well-known in the cybersecurity industry, but until today, I don't think anyone was aware of its dominance as a platform on Windows. However, CrowdStrike might have evidence to suggest that this is a freak accident, so I don't think it's fair to point fingers too much. I don't think that's realistic. I don't think anyone really understood the true scope and presence of CrowdStrike before today. I don't think technology is intrinsically good or evil; it depends on how it's used and regulated.

Spanish town to fine tourists for hogging beach spots

CNN —While tourists in Barcelona risk being squirted with water pistols, those in the town of Calpe on Spain’s Mediterranean coast face another threat: a hefty fine for reserving space on the beach for themselves. Those who do not comply with this rule face being reported, their belongings being removed and fines of €250 euros (around $270). Chairs, hammocks and umbrellas that are left unattended for more than three hours during the day may be removed, the council said. In May, there were further crackdowns on party boats and public drinking on the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca. And in April, locals in the Canary Islands protested against excessive tourism, blaming visitors for pricing them out of their homes and causing environmental damage.

Here’s what to know if you’re planning to travel this weekend. David J. Phillip/APUS-based carriers American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Airlines, SunCountry and Frontier Airlines all reported issues on Friday. Crews have limits on their working hours, so staffing challenges cascade along with flight delays. That all depends on the type of ticket you have, the airline you’re flying with and whether you have travel insurance (which is always a good idea). If you’re set to travel soon, wherever you are in the world, it’s worth double checking your individual journey status before you travel.

BARCELONA, SPAIN - FEBRUARY 26: A logo sits illuminated at the Nokia booth in the Mobile World Congress 2024 on February 26, 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Xavi Torrent/Getty Images)Shares of Finnish telecom firm Nokia tumbled on Thursday after the company reported a 32% drop in second-quarter operating profit on the back of weak demand for its 5G equipment. Earlier in the day, Nokia said its comparable operating profit declined to 423 million euros ($462 million) in the second quarter, down by nearly a third from the 619 million euros posted in the same period of last year. Citing "ongoing market weakness," the company said net sales also eased by 18% to 4.47 billion euros – the lowest level achieved since the fourth quarter of 2015, according to LSEG data. The landscape likewise remains "challenging as operators continue to be cautious" in the mobile networks sector, he warned.

Heading into the Paris Games, the Australians will be favored to win the most gold medals in the pool. CNN —The USA Basketball Men’s National Team survived a late Australia fightback in an underwhelming 98-92 victory in an Olympic warmup game on Monday. But when Australia missed chances to reduce the deficit further, back-to-back three-pointers from Tyrese Haliburton sealed the USA win. Not that it’s often mattered, though, with Team USA winning seven of the eight men’s basketball gold medals on offer since professionals were able to participate for the first time at Barcelona 1992. “We stopped playing mid third quarter and started turning the ball over,” Team USA coach Steve Kerr said, per the NBA. For Australia, the defending Olympic bronze medalist, Jock Landale scored a game high 20 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists in a standout performance.

Protests in Spain will spread if European officials fail to address mass tourism's negative effect on the lives of residents, UNESCO's Peter Debrine told "Squawk Box Asia" on Monday. He cited the banning of large cruise ships in Venice, Italy, in 2021 as an example. "Cruise ships are no longer going through the Grand Canal." Cruise ships now dock farther from Venice, which helps the structural and environmental integrity of the city. But travelers also play a role in curbing mass tourism, said Debrine.

Last year, a resale ticket to Taylor Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour cost an average of $2,183. I had never considered spending so much on live music before, but the Eras Tour featured songs spanning her entire career. I had been listening to Taylor Swift since I was about 14 years old and leaned on her music as I grew up. A few months later, Taylor Swift, now officially a billionaire, announced a European leg of her 2024 tour. They probed the sample with an innovative experimental technique that revealed the three-dimensional architecture of the mammoth’s genome. Hendrik Poinar, an evolutionary geneticist at McMaster University in Canada, was “floored” — the technique had successfully captured the original geometry of long stretches of DNA, a feat never before accomplished with an ancient DNA sample. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said Dr. Poinar, who reviewed the paper for the journal. An organism’s full genome resides in cell nuclei, in long, unfragmented DNA strands called chromosomes. “To have the actual architectural structure of the genome, which suggests gene expression patterns, that’s a whole other level,” Dr. Poinar said.

Known for its picturesque and well-preserved traditional Korean houses called “hanok,” Bukchon Hanok Village is one of Seoul’s most popular tourist hot spots – attracting thousands of visitors every day. But tourists greatly outnumber residents and complaints about noise, littering and privacy issues in the vicinity have escalated over the years. Located in the Jongno district in downtown Seoul, Bukchon sits near other cultural landmarks like the Jongmyo royal ancestral shrine and the grand Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces. In a bid to ease tensions and control crowds, district officials will start to restrict tourist access to the popular village from as early as October this year. Out-of-control tourists have been especially problematic in Kyoto, one of Japan’s most popular tourist cities, famed for its iconic Gion geisha district.

Awaiting England in Sunday’s final is the formidable foe of Spain, which has been unequivocally the best team of Euro 2024 so far. Foden, who was having by far his best game of the tournament, then hit the woodwork himself as the post denied the Manchester City forward a stunning curled effort.
