When the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, one of its first actions was to bar women and girls from participating in sports publicly. Female athletes in Afghanistan today face similar threats from the Taliban, including physical abuse and raids on their homes. The most recent example is the International Olympic Committee’s decision to allow a team representing Afghanistan in the Paris Games. It should let the athletes — most of whom live in exile — compete on the Refugee Olympic Team, which would send a message of hope to refugees around the world. But none of the three women representing Afghanistan — in athletics and cycling — live and train in the country, nor could they visit without risking their lives.

CNN —British distance runner Jessica Warner-Judd says that she has provisionally been diagnosed with a form of epilepsy after collapsing mid-race at the European Athletics Championships. Warner-Judd was competing in the final of the women’s 10,000 meters in Rome when she had a seizure with about 600 meters left until the finish. “From getting the bus to the warm up track, I can’t explain it – something felt off,” Warner-Judd wrote in the post. “It has been an incredibly tough couple of months and has culminated in me being provisionally diagnosed with focal epilepsy,” she added. The 29-year-old, who placed eighth at last year’s world championships, thanked British Athletics and her friends and family for their support over the past few months.

The UConn coach declined a six-year, $70 million contract offer from the Los Angeles Lakers to become the team’s next head coach, team and league sources confirmed Monday. Los Angeles would have made Hurley one of the NBA’s six highest-paid coaches. CNN —Spanish race walker Laura García-Caro cut a dismayed figure at the end of the 20-kilometer race at the European Athletics Championships as she narrowly missed out on a bronze medal having celebrated before the finish line. García-Caro looked set to finish in third at the end of Friday’s race in Rome, and, with a Spanish flag draped around her neck and the finish line inside the Stadio Olimpico approaching, she punched the air in delight. Ukraine’s Lyudmila Olyanovska surged past her rival two or three meters from the line, leaving a look of horror on García-Caro’s face. The 31-year-old Olyanovska, a silver medalist at the European Championships 10 years ago, later dedicated the medal to Ukraine. I do not know even if my five-year-old son saw me competing today because in Ukraine the infrastructure is broken.

CNN —Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka proved his days of sporting prowess aren’t yet behind him as he won a bronze medal in shot put at the Oceania Athletics Championships on Wednesday. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka/FacebookSporting success is nothing new to Rabuka. The politician represented Fiji in the decathlon at the 1974 Commonwealth Games and played rugby union for his country, according to Reuters. The Peoples Alliance party leader was elected Fiji’s Prime Minister in 2022, leading a successful coalition government.
