CNN —For the past year and a half, medical cannabis company CEO Gary Long has spent a lot of his time reassuring Georgia’s small-town mayors about what will soon be coming to their local pharmacy: medical marijuana. The Georgia Board of Pharmacy is currently processing applications from pharmacies around the state that want to sell low-dose THC products. National chains such as CVS and Walmart won’t be selling THC products in Georgia, but Long said 130 local pharmacies have already agreed to sell his product exclusively. Making medical cannabis so accessible in such a traditionally conservative Deep South state like Georgia caught some by surprise. Californians have been able to buy medical cannabis since 1996 and adults there got the right to use it recreationally in 2016.

Those beliefs are known to have caused medical providers to rate Black patients’ pain lower, misdiagnose health concerns and recommend less relief. “I believe technology can really provide shared prosperity and I believe it can help to close the gaps we have in health care delivery,” Omiye said. In 2019, for example, academic researchers revealed that a large hospital in the United States was employing an algorithm that systematically privileged white patients over Black patients. It was later revealed the same algorithm was being used to predict the health care needs of 70 million patients nationwide. In June, another study found racial bias built into commonly used computer software to test lung function was likely leading to fewer Black patients getting care for breathing problems.

Doubts abound about a new Alzheimer’s blood test
  + stars: | 2023-10-18 | by ( Judith Graham | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
The Quest Diagnostics blood test, AD-Detect, measures elevated levels of amyloid-beta proteins, a signature characteristic of Alzheimer’s. But Alzheimer’s researchers and clinicians aren’t convinced the Quest test is backed by sound scientific research. Though blood tests for Alzheimer’s are likely to become common in the years ahead, the Alzheimer’s Association said it’s premature to offer a test of this kind directly to consumers. Because the science behind blood tests for Alzheimer’s is still developing and because “patients may not really understand the uncertainty of test results,” Edelmayer said, the Alzheimer’s Association “does not endorse the use of the AD-Detect test by consumers.”Quest’s blood test is one of several developments altering the landscape of Alzheimer’s care in the United States. The bottom line: Before taking a test, “older adults need to ask themselves, ‘Why do I want to know this?

Having seen several previous Israeli strikes, Shawa told CNN they were certain it would be targeted. Born in Seattle to an American mother and Palestinian father, Shawa is one of an estimated 500-600 Palestinian-Americans in Gaza. It’s an impossible situation to be in.”Trapped with no way outEven if Shawa decided to leave Gaza, he can’t right now. “We anticipate that the situation at the Rafah crossing will remain fluid and unpredictable,” the US State Department advised US citizens. Despite the dire situation the Palestinian-Americans face, they at least have some hope of being able to leave Gaza soon – a remote prospect for those without alternative passports.

Political Cartoons View All 1211 Images“Until we get more Black women into clinical trials, we can’t change the science. Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women and tend to be diagnosed younger. As recruiting continues, enrolling Black women and other women of color will “absolutely” continue as a priority, Pisano said. At the U.S. study sites, 21% of study participants are Black women — that's higher than a typical cancer treatment study, in which 9% of participants are Black, McCaskill-Stevens said. Her sister recently completed treatment for triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive type that affects Black women at higher rates than white women.
