Elon Musk was "pained" by the fallout with his eldest daughter, his biographer wrote in a new book. Musk told Walter Isaacson that his daughter "doesn't want to spend time with me." Musk's daughter legally changed her name in 2022 and said she didn't want to be associated with him. AdvertisementAdvertisement"She went beyond socialism to being a full communist and thinking that anyone rich is evil," Isaacson said Musk told him. The biographer said Musk told him he'd "made many overtures," but "she doesn't want to spend time with me."

Italy struggles with spike in migrant arrivals

Newly arrived migrants wait to embark on a ferry to the mainland, in the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, Italy, August 27, 2023. On Lampedusa island, Italy's southernmost outpost, more than 4,200 people landed over the weekend, local police chief Emanuele Ricifari told Reuters. Italy has recorded more than 107,500 sea arrivals in the year to date, compared with around 53,000 in the same period last year. The spike has partly been driven by an increase in the ranks of unaccompanied minors making the perilous sea journey to Italy. The Italian Red Cross (CRI) took over the running of the facility on June 1, replacing a cooperative that had been criticised for failing to provide adequate care.

The numbers portray a stalling economy, but there is a far more profound concern. Chinese consumers and businesses are losing confidence that their government has the ability to recognize and fix the economy’s deep-seated problems. If President Xi Jinping’s government doesn’t tackle this fundamental issue, any other measures will have little impact in arresting the downward spiral. This confidence problem is apparent in the tepid private investment and weak household consumption over the past year. The worrying cognitive dissonance between the government and entrepreneurs became apparent during a recent trip I took to China.

Take Five: Summer at Jackson Hole

REUTERS/Jason Reed Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - It's summer camp season and not to be left out, U.S. rate setters and overseas pals gather in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to talk central banking. U.S. Federal Reserve officials (plus friends from the ECB, BoE and BOJ) descend on Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Aug. 24-26 for their annual central bank confab. Inflation remains sticky in places and investors want to know how long it will take for central banks to switch to easing. European PMIs could provide a bigger signal on whether the European Central Bank will hike again in September and if the Bank of England opts for a big rate increase. Turkey's central bank is poised to raise rates on Thursday for the third time in a row since Hafize Gaye Erkan was appointed as governor in early June.

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole. Core inflation actually doubled to 0.8% y/y and the drop in consumer prices was largely driven by year-ago volatility in pork prices. That puts the focus on retail sales on Tuesday where a rise of 4.7% is forecast, though a wide range of estimates from +2.8% to +10.8% suggests a surprise is possible. The same goes for U.S. retail sales on Tuesday where the median is for a 0.4% increase, but BofA is tipping 0.7% based on credit and debit spending in the month. The dollar is also flying on the Aussie and kiwi and a range of emerging Asian currencies, which are being dumped as proxies for China risk.

For President Biden and his party, the appointment of a special counsel on Friday in the investigation into Hunter Biden was hardly a welcome development. A blossoming criminal inquiry focused on the president’s son is a high-risk proposition that comes with the dangers of an election-year trial and investigations that could balloon beyond the tax and gun charges the younger Mr. Biden already faces. Yet many Democrats were sanguine about a dark moment in a summer of cautiously bright news for their president. Part of their sense of calm stems from a version of the what-aboutism often adopted by Republicans since Donald J. Trump’s rise: Mr. Biden’s son is under investigation, Democrats say, but across the aisle, the G.O.P. front-runner has actually been criminally indicted — three times.

Edward Marrinan, macro credit strategy desk analyst at SMBC Nikko Securities America, added: "Credit risk at this point is mispriced." The move prompted a sell-off in equities and slight widening in corporate credit spreads. The average investment-grade bond spreads as of on Thursday were just a few basis points wider than the tightest levels touched this year in July and 16 basis points tighter from January. Junk-bond spreads are 98 basis points inside January levels. "With market consensus now expecting a soft landing, the credit markets are arguably underpricing default risk," BMO’s Krieter said.

U.S. bank shares dropped on Tuesday after ratings agency Moody's downgraded credit ratings of several U.S. regional lenders and placed some banking giants on review for potential downgrade. LONDON, Aug 9 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A fast-escalating wheat war in the Black Sea may have a silver lining. The Turkey-brokered accord had allowed Kyiv, the world’s fifth largest wheat producer, to export food via Odesa across the Black Sea. As a result, global wheat prices on the Chicago Board of Trade declined by nearly 40% between October and May. Reuters GraphicsNervousness around the unravelling of last year’s grain deal triggered short-lived spikes of 17% to 20% in wheat prices. Both Moscow and Kyiv know by now that protecting their vital grain exports is in both countries’ interest.

In one quarter — one off-cycle quarter that didn't feature a no new iPhone — Apple (AAPL) delivered a whopping $81.8 billion in sales. I came up with "own it, don't trade it" for Apple because there have been so many quarters like this one. The people who sold Apple shares on Friday no doubt sold it on their Apple devices. I would be more worried if Apple's customer satisfaction went down than I am that iPhone sales lagged. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday explained what the Fitch Ratings debt downgrade might mean for investors and the market as a whole. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday explained his decision to cut Johnson & Johnson from the Investing Club Charitable Trust. The company has faced thousands of lawsuits in recent years, many alleging that its talc baby powder and other talc-based products cause cancer. "I simply can't have a position that's precarious because of litigation, not because of the fundamentals," Cramer said. Cramer said he originally thought J&J would be able to reach a settlement with plaintiffs, and was optimistic about the company's performance aside from its lawsuits. U.S. annual inflation slowed considerably in June, likely pushing the Federal Reserve closer to ending its fastest interest rate hiking cycle since the 1980s, data showed on Friday. Barclays said investors flocked to equities this week, with inflows of $10 billion to U.S.-listed stocks, according to a note to clients. But starting in 2012, Shinzo Abe, then the prime minister, began pushing for a new approach, one that he argued was more fitting for modern realities. Japan’s current prime minister, Fumio Kishida, plans to raise defense spending gradually to 2 percent of economic output, and the public reaction has been “remarkably sanguine,” Motoko says. The additional money that countries spend on defense is money they cannot spend on roads, child care, cancer research, refugee resettlement, public parks or clean energy, my colleague Patricia points out. One reason Macron has insisted on raising France’s retirement age despite widespread protests, analysts believe, is a need to leave more money for the military. Those other countries, sensing a more threatening world, are now once again promising to pull their weight.

Markets are still in the dark whether Treasurer Jim Chalmers will reappoint Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor Philip Lowe or bow to public pressure for a new pair of hands at an institution that stumbled over its policy messaging during the pandemic. "Markets would be more concerned if there wasn't that list," noted Shane Oliver, chief economist at AMP Capital. They are among the front runners in part because there is much pressure for Chalmers to appoint the first female head of the RBA. One dark horse also being mentioned is Guy Debelle, a former RBA deputy governor who resigned last year to join the green energy business of mining billionaire Andrew Forrest. It is possible Chalmers could reappoint Lowe for a shorter period to see out the RBA's current tightening cycle and planned changes in its operation and structure.
