Clipped Green Claims at COP27 Might Signal Progress

Less fanfare from companies at this year’s United Nations climate conference doesn’t necessarily mean they are scaling back their ambitions for decarbonization. Corporate and political leaders from around the world are gathered on the shores of the Red Sea for this year’s Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP27. One notable outcome of last year’s COP26 in Glasgow was a raft of promises from businesses to cut their net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. Executives have many reasons to be less vocal this year.
Business leaders are pushing for specific actions to combat climate change and asking for clearer policies to support such initiatives from governments at the United Nations climate summit in Egypt. Top executives of 101 companies penned an open letter last week urging governments and companies to support existing solutions to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
“If I won the lottery, I’d do this for free because I have a passion for public health,” Bernstein said. I had to put other projects on hold to do pro bono work for the CDC. “If we want CDC to get better at fighting diseases, we need to stop tying their hands behind their back,” he said. A senior CDC official called it an “antiquated” system that “has not evolved over time.” The official spoke on the on the condition of anonymity so she could speak freely on the matter. ‘A real challenge to solve’The CDC is preparing a presentation to urge Congress it to fix this, Walensky said.
Oil and Gas Profits Are an Easy Political Target

BP said it recorded $8.2 billion in underlying earnings in the third quarter. Business for European supermajors BP and Shell might be too good for political comfort. On Tuesday, BP said it recorded $8.2 billion in underlying earnings in the third quarter—slightly behind the previous quarter’s bonanza but far ahead of the equivalent period last year. Commodity prices have moderated since the summer, but volatile natural-gas markets helped BP’s traders rake in exceptional profits. Shell’s gas trading had a disappointing quarter but the company still reported strong results last Thursday, with $9.5 billion in adjusted earnings.
The head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tested positive again for Covid-19. Walensky, 53, first tested positive on Oct. 21. CDC officials said Walensky is up to date on her vaccines. She is one of several U.S. health officials who have gotten Covid-19. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the face of America’s pandemic response, and Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra both tested positive in June.
Oct 31 (Reuters) - The director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Rochelle Walensky, experienced a COVID-19 rebound after completing a course of Pfizer Inc's (PFE.N) COVID-19 pill, the agency said on Monday. Walensky had experienced mild COVID-19 symptoms less than ten days ago. After completing a course of Pfizer's Paxlovid, and a period of isolation, she had tested negative for the virus, but on Sunday, she tested positive again, CDC added. Some people who took the antiviral drug have suffered from a relapse or a rebound that occurred days after the five-day treatment course had ended, studies have shown. Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked Pfizer to test the effects of an additional course of its antiviral Paxlovid among people who had experienced a rebound in COVID-19 after treatment.
All of those factors make Washoe County the ultimate battleground for Cortez Masto and Laxalt. Both campaigns say that in the final 11 days, they’re swamping Washoe County with TV ads, canvassers and events. “Without a significant win in Washoe County, she has very few paths of winning Nevada.”Washoe County eluded Cortez Masto and Laxalt in their most recent statewide races. “The Democrats keep harping on that item here,” Bruce Parks, the Washoe County Republican chair, said of the abortion issue. “As I talk to Nevadans, including in Washoe County, it’s a combination of things — it’s not just the kitchen table issues,” she said.
Credit Suisse Might Have Hit Rock Bottom

For the brave, this could be the time to buy Credit Suisse . For the more risk-averse, the bank’s ability to attract capital this quarter will serve as a crucial proof point for its recovery. The beleaguered Swiss company unveiled its latest overhaul on Thursday alongside a big third-quarter loss, mostly due to a deferred tax asset write-down. Executives’ mantra on Thursday was that the bank is at an inflection point and that they must get it right.
Rising Rates Are Banks’ Frenemies

Rising interest rates are good news for lenders, but they bring worries too. Third-quarter results on Tuesday from two of Europe’s largest banks offered contrasting cases in point. HSBC and UBS both reported improved net interest income, but they diverged on their outlook. Loan-loss provisions show that the Anglo-Chinese lender is preparing for tougher times, limiting its capacity for shareholder returns, and its shares fell nearly 6% in European morning trading. Meanwhile, UBS’s stock price rose almost 6% after it posted better-than-expected profits and nudged up cash returns.
Is Another Gas Glut on the Horizon?

Commitments to build more liquefied-natural-gas infrastructure have been stacking up after years of little investment. Don’t be fooled by tight markets and high prices for liquefied natural gas. The spot price for natural gas delivered to Europe has retrenched from summer highs but remains around €100 a megawatt-hour, equivalent to $97. Prices were hovering near €20 only 18 months ago following a yearslong glut. The recent mood has been enough to prompt a wave of commitments to build LNG liquefaction facilities.

CNN —Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tested positive for Covid-19 Friday. Walensky is experiencing mild symptoms and is up-to-date on her Covid-19 vaccines, according to a statement released by the agency. Walensky received an updated Covid-19 booster in September. The updated Covid-19 booster shots are bivalent, meaning they target the original coronavirus strain as well as the Omicron BA.4/BA.5 subvariants. The booster doses are recommended to given at least two months after the last dose of any Covid-19 vaccine and up to three months after an infection.

A Princeton University student who vanished days ago has been found dead, authorities said Thursday. Since Sunday, the Princeton University DPS had been leading the investigation into her disappearance along with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. On Wednesday and Thursday, Princeton University students were told to expect an increased law enforcement presence on and around campus as the desperate search continued with the use of a helicopter, drones and watercraft. They said they worked with her at Minds Matter Cleveland, a nonprofit that offers academic and mentoring resources for high-performing, low-income high school students. BP Bets Big on Biofuel

BP $4.1 billion biofuel deal makes strategic sense, but it comes at a SPAC-tacular price. The British oil-and-gas giant is buying Archaea Energy a leading U.S. producer of so-called renewable natural gas, a greener version of the fuel because it is recovered from waste rather than pumped out of the ground. The acquisition adds to BP’s new-energy business and there could be synergies in the two companies’ complementary skills—energy trading in BP’s case and gas production in Archaea’s.
"Not everybody got flu vaccinated last year, and many people did not get the flu. So that makes us ripe to have potentially a severe flu season." Walensky's warning comes ahead of a CDC report on flu spread expected Friday. Doctors are not required to report each positive flu test to public health officials, so the CDC and others monitor probable flu activity by looking at "influenza-like illnesses." It takes about two weeks after a flu vaccine injection to provide full protection.
DALLAS — Well before jumping into the Texas attorney general's race, Democrat Rochelle Garza beat back a Trump administration attempt to stop a detained immigrant teenager from getting an abortion. Bob Daemmrich / Zuma via Alamy fileGarza has already made history by being the first Latina nominee for Texas attorney general. I’m a mother and I’m here to beat criminally indicted Ken Paxton,” Garza told supporters gathered at a Chocolate Secrets in Dallas. Polls have shown Garza within 2 to 7 percentage points of Paxton with all Texas voters. Tony Gutierrez / AP filePaxton was recently in the headlines again for fleeing his home to avoid being served a subpoena to testify in a lawsuit challenging Texas’ abortion ban.
U.S. health regulators on Wednesday expanded eligibility for the new Covid-19 booster shots to children as young as 5 years old, broadening access to help bolster protection against Omicron strains of the coronavirus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the updated booster from Pfizer Inc. and its partner BioNTech SE for children ages 5 through 11, and Moderna Inc.’s updated booster for children 6 through 17. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky subsequently recommended use of the updated boosters in these age groups.
There was one big problem: The nation’s top public health professionals failed to consult their very colleagues who’d be responsible for communicating this advice to the public. All but one have been with the agency for at least 14 years, and three are nearing or have exceeded their third decade of service. While some employees say they are optimistic that the agency can improve its public health responses, blunders during the Covid response still haunt those who have dedicated their lives to public health. “When people ask, ‘where do you work?’ I used to say that ‘I work at CDC’ with pride,” a staffer said. “I certainly have talked to staff who are very distressed by it and feel very concerned,” a senior staffer said.
Workers sit outside of D.C. Health's first monkeypox vaccination clinic, which is administering the first Jynneos vaccine doses distributed in the U.S. capital, in Washington, U.S., June 28, 2022. REUTERS/Gavino GarayWASHINGTON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - At risk people nationwide will now be able to get Bavarian Nordic's (BAVA.CO) Jynneos monkeypox vaccine before being exposed to the disease, U.S. Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky said on Wednesday. At risk individuals will now be eligible to receive the vaccine before exposure as the CDC shifts to a Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) strategy, Wallensky said. Monkeypox is transmitted through close contact with an infected person, such as via sexual activity, or with the skin blisters associated with the disease. People with jobs that put them at risk of exposure, such as healthcare workers, were already eligible for vaccination against monkeypox.
The data indicate that even a single dose of the vaccine provides some initial protection against infection as soon as two weeks after the shot, Walensky said. The Jynneos vaccine, manufactured by the Danish company Bavarian Nordic, is administered in two doses 28 days apart. Walensky said although the data on a single dose is promising, lab studies have demonstrated that the immune protection is highest two weeks after the second dose. "What we have right now is data on how well and how our vaccine is working after as single dose. What we don't yet have is what happens after a second dose and how durable that protection is," Walensky said.
AUSTIN, Texas—Democratic civil-rights lawyer Rochelle Garza is challenging Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in a race where the incumbent is emphasizing his close ties to former President Donald Trump and counting on the loyalty of the state’s most conservative voters, while his opponent tries to make his legal scandals the focus. Democrats see opportunity this election season in Ms. Garza’s campaign, which is based in part on trying to win moderates who might otherwise vote Republican but are concerned that Mr. Paxton has been indicted on securities fraud charges and is being probed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, after former aides accused him of misusing his office.
Credit Suisse Needs the Deal of the Decade

Credit Suisse has tested investor patience over the years with strategic overhauls that haven’t really worked. Credit Suisse latest restructuring plan will require all the deal-making prowess it can muster. Shares in the Swiss bank have tumbled to record lows this week in reaction to a drip feed of leaks about how its new board might overhaul the business. On Friday, a Reuters report that it was sounding out investors about raising more capital sent the stock down 10% to trade at around 22% of book value.
