Veteran investor Howard Marks said he was hopeful about China's economy, but cautioned that the country's growth target was a monumental challenge. China has set a growth target of "around 5%" for 2024, though Bank of America and Citigroup, among others, have projected the world's second-largest economy will grow at under 5%. The World Bank has pegged China growth in 2024 at 4.8%, and expects it to decline further to 4.3% next year, despite a recent slate measures to boost the economy. The World Bank cited headwinds such as sluggish Chinese consumer spending, a struggling property market and an ageing population as key concerns for the world's second-largest economy. In the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's Nov. 5th victory, the stock and bond markets have had decidedly different reactions to the news. Initially, the stock market surged, while bonds sold off and drove interest rates higher. The bond market, along with other inflation indicators, have shown some concern about the notion that tax cuts pay for themselves. There have also been worries that the Trump tax cuts, if extended, would add considerably to annual deficits and the sum of the national debt. The stock market is viewed more favorably by many, as was Zeus in "Clash of the Titans."

Prosecutors on Tuesday are set to tell a judge whether they think the criminal hush money case against President-elect Donald Trump should head to sentencing, as planned, or be dismissed following his electoral victory, as his lawyers have requested. Those records related to a $130,000 payment his then-personal lawyer Michael Cohen made shortly before the 2016 election to porn star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about a purported one-time sexual tryst with Trump a decade earlier. Judge Juan Merchan had been expected to rule on a dismissal request by Trump's lawyers on Nov. 12 at the earliest. But on the heels of Trump's election win, the DA's office told Merchan they wanted him to delay his ruling, to give them time to determine how that victory affected the case. Merchan gave them one week to do so.

But the decline in support for Ms. Harris in some of the country’s most liberal areas is particularly notable. For example, in Fulton County, which contains most of Atlanta, Ms. Harris gained about 4,500 votes, but Mr. Trump gained more than 7,400. He similarly outran Ms. Harris where she made gains in Wake County, N.C., Lancaster County, Pa., and Montgomery County, Texas. In Milwaukee County in swing-state Wisconsin, Ms. Harris lost 1,200 voters compared with Mr. Biden’s total in 2020, while Mr. Trump gained more than 3,500. Three Wall Street banks have taken differing views on gold's trajectory in 2025, reflecting the complex economic outlook. Goldman Sachs expects the price of the yellow metal to reach $3,000 per ounce by December 2025, saying "Go For Gold" in a note from Nov. 17. The gold price has declined by 7% since late October as the risk of a disputed U.S. election result diminished. While maintaining a positive outlook on gold, UBS warned that its gains — gold had risen 35% this year until November — could slow down. In today’s edition, national political reporter Ben Kamisar examines how House Republicans are growing increasingly aligned with Donald Trump. “One of the main takeaways from this cycle is that the Democratic Party has a lot of work to do on how we’re reaching voters,” Democratic strategist Christina Freundlich said. The remaining House Republicans are going to have to summon a different level of unity than they have managed recently to move the party’s legislative agenda. Vice President Kamala Harris and Democrats convinced frequent voters and highly engaged voters to stick with them in the 2024 presidential election. “One of the main takeaways from this cycle is that the Democratic Party has a lot of work to do on how we’re reaching voters,” Democratic strategist Christina Freundlich said. 'We simply stopped communicating to many voters'Democrats overperforming with highly engaged voters — but struggling with less-engaged voters — reflects America’s political realignment over the past decade, as Democrats have made gains among college-educated and more frequent voters, while Republicans have won over more working-class and less-frequent voters. Media consumption also underscores the political split between highly engaged voters and less-engaged ones. Schale, the Democratic strategist from Florida, argues that Democrats “simply stopped communicating” with huge swaths of voters.

The NBA fined Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball $100,000 Sunday for using “offensive and derogatory” language during a postgame TV interview. At issue was an anti-gay phrase Ball used when answering a sideline interviewer’s question about defending the last shot against Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo in Charlotte’s 115-114 win over the Bucks on Saturday. Hornets coach Charles Lee addressed Ball’s remark in his postgame press conference and said Ball was “very apologetic.”“As an organization, that is obviously not something we condone,” said Lee, who is in his first season as Charlotte’s coach. “Our standards and what is required of our players in the environment we create is really important to us.”Ball, 23, is averaging 29.6 points through 12 games for the Hornets, ranking fifth in the NBA.
