Whoever is elected the 47th president of the United States will start with a rare and clear advantage: a remarkably solid economy. Tuesday’s election will show how much that all matters to voters, who will soon decide which candidate they want to entrust the economy to from here. But to regular American households, it’s more of a “Yes, but” economy: Yes, the job market is strong, but my boss wants me in five days a week, and that doesn’t work for me anymore. Yes, inflation has fallen, but I can’t afford day care. Prices across the rest of the service economy were 4.7% higher overall, and medical care was up 3.9%.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a billionaire hot spot next to Grand Teton National Park. I recently visited the ultrawealthy mountain town and was surprised by the airport and the housing. Enter Jackson Hole, Wyoming — the 60-mile-long valley bordering Grand Teton National Park. This section of Teton County comprising the towns of Jackson, Teton Village, Wilson, and others, has fewer than 11,000 residents. I got the nature getaway I expected but was surprised by many aspects of the region, from the luxe airport to the mansions in the mountains.

That shortage also affects rent prices. In August, Harris unveiled a multi-pronged plan to lower housing costs. The plan also includes two main proposals to lower rent costs. Both plans to lower rent would be subject to congressional approval, meaning that the measures may be difficult to pass even if Harris wins the presidency. Unlike Harris, Trump has not rolled out a formal housing plan, but he has tied plans to deport undocumented immigrants to housing.

In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.

Russia faces a crisis whether it continues the war or not, economist Alexander Mertens says. War spending has been a major boost to Moscow's GDP growth and wealth, and ending the war will be tricky. If Russia continues the war, the economy looks on track for a "severe recession" and long-running stagnation, Mertens said. "The current state of the Russian economy is far from critical but it does present Putin with a dilemma. The Russian economy is not yet close to collapse, but it is increasingly dependent on wartime conditions and faces growing risks of overheating."

Julian Quinones/CNNFormer Trump administration officials have outlined the speed at which they intend to dismantle the progress the Biden administration made on climate change. Trump has publicly distanced himself from the ideological blueprint, but CNN found at least 140 authors worked in the Trump administration. But given the momentum of the clean energy train, some experts and analysists doubt that Trump would be able to derail it entirely. While the green trend in economics now has Republican states like Texas leading the nation in clean energy installations, Germany, Japan and China got there first. Trump’s plan is to undo that progress, throw billions of dollars of clean energy investment out the window and give other countries the economic opportunity, instead.

But they may ditch their argument Friday morning, when the October jobs report is set to be released — just days before Election Day. Groshen disagreed, saying that initial estimates of the monthly change in hiring are “noisier than they used to be” because of the lower response. However, that gets smoothed out in later revisions as response rates improve with the additional time. That exacerbates the funding shortfall at the BLS, where inflation-adjusted funding has steadily declined over the past decade, she said. That would help improve, for instance, Federal Reserve officials’ ability to make interest rate decisions that hinge on the latest labor market data, Groshen told CNN.

Although sentiment is improving (more on that soon), poll after poll suggests that Americans hold largely negative views about the US economy. And the US economy remains a job-creation machine, adding 368,000 jobs per month on average during the Biden administration, a record high. But they’re still growing at a 3.9% adjusted rate, according to the Department of Labor. A recent study from the Brookings Institution, released last week, found a correlation between economic sentiment and political affiliation with the party in control of the White House. When Trump took office, Republican economic sentiment surged, while Democratic sentiment cratered.

Flash floods are becoming more common and more intense due to global warming. The impact of flash flooding can be particularly severe because, often, there is very little warning. Why are there more flash floods? The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a US-based nonprofit, said flash flooding has intensified because of increased rainfall and heat waves. The economy accelerated at a 3% pace in the second quarter. The U.S. economy posted another solid though slightly disappointing period of growth in the third quarter, propelled higher by strong consumer spending that has defied expectations for a slowdown. Personal consumption expenditures, the proxy for consumer activity, increased 3.7% for the quarter, the strongest performance since Q1 of 2023. Donald Trump proposed mass deportation to lower housing costs and boost job opportunities. Many Democrats say mass deportations would hurt businesses and employment opportunities for all Americans, in addition to separating families and displacing millions of people. She told BI that a mass deportation would devastate the agriculture, construction, and hospitality industries. The 6-trillion-yuan worth of debt would be raised over three years including 2024, said the sources, adding the proceeds would primarily be used to help local governments address off-the-books debt risks. Local governments would be allowed to raise that amount on top of their usual annual issuance quota, which mainly funds infrastructure spending. The quota stood at 3.9 trillion yuan this year and 3.8 trillion in 2023. The latest move is aimed at enhancing local governments' ability to manage land supply, and alleviate liquidity and debt pressures on both local governments and property developers, they added. Special-purpose bonds are a tool for off-budget debt financing used by Chinese local governments, with the proceeds raised typically earmarked for specific policy objectives, such as infrastructure expenditures.

Harris will call on Americans to “turn the page” on the Trump era and present herself as a pragmatist who will put results over party, according to a senior Harris campaign official who requested anonymity. Her campaign aims to invoke Jan. 6 as a way to remind those voters what they don’t like about Trump. President Donald Trump arrives to speak to supporters from the Ellipse near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021. Highlighting Kelly’s remarks about Trump’s authoritarian inclinations helped Harris among those crucial voters, the firm said in a memo, but by less than the economic-focused pitches. Her campaign hopes it will be seen as a hopeful and optimistic address with imagery of the White House behind her.
