Food and snack companies may feel the most pressure as weight-loss drugs become more mainstream and affect consumer behaviors, according to Bank of America. Diabetes drugs that mimic gut hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1, have found new audiences in people looking to lose weight. In some instances, people taking these medicines have reported less of a hankering for unhealthy foods or alcohol and other drinks. Weight-management products such as shakes or frozen meals could also be pressured, Meacham added. CNBC Pro compiled some of the stocks that could be at risk that the firm is watching.

Food companies fear soaring Ozempic sales could hurt their bottom lines. AdvertisementAdvertisementExecutives at America's biggest food companies can't stop talking about Ozempic . And early data suggests that Ozempic sales will have some impact on the food industry. AdvertisementAdvertisementFor example, if consumers begin to prefer smaller portions, food companies have time to adjust their package sizes, and restaurants have time to modify their menus. "This is not an existential threat to the food industry," he said.

But food companies' major bets on snacking come as investors fear the looming danger of Big Pharma's blockbuster obesity and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic. Younger generations snack more often than older consumers, said Kelsey Olsen, food and drink analyst for market research firm Mintel. Millennials and Gen-Z consumers tend to eat smaller meals that are closer together, creating more occasions to grab a snack. At the same time, Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy have taken off, fueled by prescriptions to help patients lose weight. Some patients even report developing aversions to foods with higher sugar and fat content — a category that includes many big snack brands.

New anti-obesity drugs have the potential to transform public health, while obliterating demand for products and services from the medical, food and fitness industries. Drugs developed by Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) and Eli Lilly (LLY.N) appear to be the first truly effective diet treatments. In one clinical trial, patients taking Eli Lilly’s soon-to-be-launched weight-loss drug lost about 50 pounds (23 kg). Only about a third of those who started taking the drugs for obesity were still doing so a year later, according to one analysis. Yet even as Novo, Lilly and others see their addressable markets expand, some companies will see theirs shrink.

By choosing ultraprocessed and sugary snacks, 1 in 4 of us may be undoing all the benefits of healthy eating, according to a new study. More than 90% of adults in the United States report eating one or more snacks on any given day. In the United Kingdom, where the study was done, some 47% of participants ate two snacks a day and 29% of people snacked even more often. Over 25% of the study participants reported eating healthy main meals and snacking on highly processed food and sugary treats that can increase hunger, the study found. Make healthy choices when eating snacks as well as meals to maintain your health properly, experts say.

Standing around three feet high, the modern koala is roughly 25 pounds of claws and teeth, tufty ears and fluffy white marsupial tummy. You could give one a hug — experts suggest that they prefer it if you don’t — but you wouldn’t want to carry it around all day. Now imagine that same koala, or one quite like it, weighing in at a much more manageable (and potentially cuter) six pounds. Researchers at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, believe that such a creature, named Lumakoala blackae, once made its home in the country’s Northern Territory some 25 million years ago, most likely spending its days snacking on soft leaves and the occasional insect. Their research, based on the discovery of fossilized molars at the Pwerte Marnte Marnte fossil site in the Australian outback, was published in the journal Scientific Reports this month.

So far this year, 8.5% of animals that enter the shelter system have been euthanized. But Scout's happy ending is out of reach for too many shelter animals, as national euthanasia rates for shelter pets have climbed to a three-year high, according to Shelter Animals Count. While the percentages may seem small, with an estimated 6.3 million animals moving through the shelter system each year, they add up. SAC is working on a more scientific approach to tracking euthanasia rates to help clarify the large range, Filer said. Smucker 's plan to buy Twinkies -maker Hostess Brands is a risky move, if Morgan Stanley's latest research is correct. The firm revisited its August call that a new class of weight loss medications would hamper growth at some food and beverage companies . "Across our coverage, Numerator Insights data highlight that most center-store packaged food companies slightly over-index to consumers with obesity," Kaufman said. Hostess stock soared 19% on the news. Other food stocks with higher exposure to customers with obesity include Conagra , Kraft Heinz and Smucker, the report said, citing the Numerator data.

Smucker , discussed his company's acquisition of Twinkie maker Hostess Brands on Monday with CNBC's Jim Cramer. Smucker said this move will help the company expand its snack offerings, noting how the two brands complement each other. Smucker highlighted his company's Uncrustable snack, a crust-less peanut butter and jelly sandwich, as a product that dovetails well with Hostess's shelf-stable sweet treats. Smucker said he's not worried consumers will lose their taste for sweet snacks, even as obesity drugs and emphasis on healthy eating permeate the U.S. zeitgeist. "Hostess has done such a nice job creating single-serve small portions that allow people to have snacking, sweet snacks, in moderation."

It was observed being plundered by a supermassive black hole at the heart of a spiral-shaped galaxy. The supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, called Sagittarius A*, possesses about 4 million times the mass of our sun. Most galaxies have such black holes at their center, and the environment around them can be among the most violent places in the universe. The star was observed orbiting the black hole every 20 to 30 days. This marked the first time that scientists had observed a sun-like star being repeatedly snacked upon by a supermassive black hole.

CNN —US stocks typically see their worst performance of the year in September, but there are signs the market could avoid a steep downturn this time around. This month has been the worst for stocks on average since 1928, according to Yardeni Research. That’s partly because, much like August, there is a lull in economic data that could catalyze a stock rally. While stocks fell roughly 2% in August, they still outperformed their 4% loss during the same month last year. It’s the latest example of how extreme weather, exacerbated by climate change, impacted major North American attractions this summer, reports my colleague Nathaniel Meyersohn.

Make it a cool pickle summer with this easy method

Sure, you can preserve food with a more advanced water-bath canning method, especially if you’re planning to save your summer pickles for up to a year. Or add pickled vegetables such as green beans or cauliflower to a grain salad or grain bowl as a topping. While pickled vegetables are always welcome in pasta salad (and potato salad, for that matter), they also bring an unexpected zing to hot pasta recipes. Or add pickled shallots, broccoli or peppers to pesto-sauced noodles. And when it’s too hot to think of anything else to do, there’s always “snack dinner” with a variety of pickled vegetables to save the day.
