The Omaha-based conglomerate held $69.9 billion worth of Apple shares at the end of September, according to its third-quarter earnings report released Saturday morning. That implied Buffett offloaded approximately a quarter of his stake with about 300 million shares remaining in the holding. Warren Buffett sold another big chuck of his Apple stake, downsizing Berkshire Hathaway 's biggest equity holding for four quarters in a row. Before Apple, Buffett largely avoided technology companies for most of his career, saying they were outside of his circle of competence. Apple shares are up 16% on the year, trailing the S&P 500's 20% gain.

Henry McMaster to reduce his sentence to life in prison without parole because of his spotless prison record and willingness to be a mentor to other inmates. A prison employee announced the execution could begin at 6:01 p.m. Moore took several deep breaths that sounded like snores over the next minute. Three jurors who condemned Moore to death in 2001, including one who wrote Friday, sent letters asking McMaster to change his sentence to life without parole. They were joined by a former state prison director, Moore’s trial judge, his son and daughter, a half-dozen childhood friends and several pastors. Moore is the second inmate executed in South Carolina since it resumed executions.

New York CNN —The last three years have upended everything about the way we expect the economy to work. But the pandemic-era inflationary period played out unlike any other in history, and wealthy people made out like bandits. And that may be because the only real inflation we’ve seen in decades was a multi-year profit bonanza for them. And that has provided a permission structure for some wealthy Trump supporters to shrug their shoulders at his inflationary economic agenda. But it won’t be the same flavor of profit-driven inflation we’ve seen over the past three years.

CNN —One of the driest months in United States history is coming to a close after causing the worst drought in more than 20 years in parts of the East as temperatures soar well above average there. As of October 25, the average precipitation across the Lower 48 was less than an inch. Only five months in the 129 years of records have ended with less than an inch of average precipitation over the Lower 48. Flash drought happens when drought conditions increase quickly, rather than over a multi-month or yearly timeframe, according to NOAA. It’s the state’s worst drought level since 2002.

Moore is the last person remaining on South Carolina’s death row to be convicted by a jury with no Black members, his defense attorneys say. “No other South Carolina death penalty case has involved an unarmed defendant who defended himself when the victim threatened him with a weapon,” they said in a statement. “He’s a human being who made mistakes,” Lyndall Moore told the AP. Moore’s attorneys responded Wednesday the case’s “unique procedural backdrop” should allow the justices to consider their arguments. Henry McMaster Meg Kinnard/APIn an earlier federal court request for a stay of execution, Moore’s attorneys expressed concern about McMaster’s past comments regarding clemency for death sentences, the ruling denying that request shows.

CNN —Inflation has slowed further and is just a hair’s breadth from the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, which is the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, showed prices rose 2.1% for the year ended in September, a slowdown from 2.3% in August, according to Commerce Department data released Thursday. The annual increase, which marks a fresh three-and-a-half-year low, fell right in line with what economists were expecting, according to FactSet consensus estimates. However, falling gas prices helped to keep the lid on any gains. Many states are seeing gas prices below $3 a gallon, a trend that’s expected to continue in the coming weeks as global supply eclipses demand.

Silver told Fortt that his current model shows the odds favoring Trump, who holds a 55% to 45% win probability advantage over Harris. Most people no longer even have the landline phones which past election cycle polling history relied on. Why the betting markets may be all 'vibe and chatter'The betting markets show a much bigger edge for Trump, with major wagers placed on Polymarket, Robinhood jumping into the action, and presidential election contracts surging in popularity. Critics have raised concerns that the election betting markets are potentially being manipulated. But Silver, who is a consultant to one of the leading prediction markets, Polymarket, says he wouldn't pay much attention to the betting markets data right now, as they simply may not be very accurate at this moment in the election cycle.
