Oct 31 (Reuters) - Telecommunications services firm Lumen Technologies (LUMN.N) beat Wall Street estimates for third-quarter revenue on Tuesday, helped by strong demand for its services as businesses digitize their operations. The Monroe, Louisiana-based company posted revenue of $3.64 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, beating analysts' average estimate of $3.61 billion, according to LSEG data, but fell 17% from a year earlier. The proposed sale of Lumen's EMEA business is expected to close on Wednesday, subject to meeting customary closing conditions, the company said. The company said its long-term debt at the end of the third-quarter was $19.74 billion. Lumen posted a net loss of $78 million for the quarter compared with a reported net income of $578 million a year earlier.

When Marilyn Monroe moved to Brentwood in 1962, the Los Angeles neighborhood provided the perfect seclusion for the world’s most famous woman. The four-bedroom Spanish colonial-style house was tucked off a quiet street, with a kidney-shaped pool and towering palm trees. The house was known as “Cursum Perficio,” which in Latin loosely translates to “I end the journey.”Six months after she moved in, Ms. Monroe died of a drug overdose in her bedroom. Though her time there was short, the Brentwood home has become a quiet monument to her grand life, with fans still leaving flowers at the front gate some 60 years after her death. The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Friday to begin a process that would designate the home as a historic and cultural monument, saving it from demolition.

Circuit Court of Appeals for a new ruling to prevent the "improper result" of allowing parts of the lower court order "to regain effect even after having been held invalid by this court." The plaintiffs allege that U.S. officials lobby social media platforms to suppress what the government considers to be misinformation, violating users' right to free speech under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment. While the case was still at an early stage, Doughty issued a preliminary injunction banning a wide range of communications between a slew of officials and social media companies. The panel limited the injunction's reach to a smaller group of officials, including White House staff, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It said that the 5th Circuit should either put the parts of Doughty's order that it reversed on hold, or finalize its order immediately.

Circuit Court of Appeals narrowed much of an injunction that restricted Biden administration contact with social media companies issued by a Louisiana judge. The agencies are barred from coercing, threatening or pressuring social media companies to remove content. The attorneys general of Louisiana and Missouri, along with several individuals who say they were censored on social media, had sued Biden administration agencies and officials last year. The Biden administration has argued that it asked social media companies to take down posts it considered to be harmful misinformation, but never forced them to do so.
