And it’s a playbook that former President Donald Trump’s campaign has tossed aside. It’s a gamble, Trump’s campaign internally acknowledges, but one that they insist is built on data they have collected over nearly a decade and tested for the past six months. Days later, the Michigan state party chairman also plugged 10xVotes when he rolled into Traverse City, Michigan, alongside Trump running mate JD Vance. But rather than courting those voters, Trump’s campaign is in search of new ones. Trump’s campaign has also tried to seize on discord within the Democratic coalition.

And they’ve kept up a drumbeat of dubious claims about voting, along with the lie that the election was stolen in 2020. Prosecutors allege that the Trump campaign used similarly aggressive tactics in Philadelphia to force confrontation with election officials, which Trump and his allies used to claim his supporters were denied access to observe the count. Election officials have been operating in an increasingly hostile environment as GOP skepticism of election administration has climbed. Among them: shifting numbers of noncitizens Trump allies claimed had voted in the 2020 election. In Georgia, state courts are reviewing new rules from the State Election Board that Democrats say give county election officials broad authority to delay certification of the results in search of purported election irregularities.

DETROIT — Ford Motor is increasing the refinement and technology of its large Expedition SUV as part of a vehicle redesign to better compete with growing competition. The new three-row SUV features a smoother interior and exterior design, increased comfort and convenience features such as a 24-inch driver display, and the addition of the automaker's BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system. Ford declined to release pricing for the 2025 Expedition until closer to when the vehicles will arrive in dealerships in the spring. Current starting pricing ranges from $55,000 to $84,000, depending on the model. The average transaction price of current models is roughly $70,000, according to Ford.

DETROIT — Stellantis’ U.S. new vehicle sales continued a yearslong free fall during the third quarter, despite CEO Carlos Tavares’ attempts to correct what he has called “arrogant” mistakes. Stellantis was expected to be the worst sales performer of major automakers during the third quarter. Auto industry forecaster Cox Automotive had projected a sales decline of roughly 21% for the carmaker. All of Stellantis’ brands except for its niche Fiat unit experienced sales declines in the third quarter, led by more than 40% reductions for Chrysler and Dodge. Stellantis’ performance compares with the overall U.S. new light-duty vehicle sales market, which increased 13% last year, according to federal data.

Jeep vehicles are delivered to a dealership on June 20, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. DETROIT — Stellantis ' U.S. new vehicle sales during the third quarter continued a yearslong freefall despite CEO Carlos Tavares' actions to fix what he has called "arrogant" mistakes by the company. Stellantis was expected to be the worst sales performer of major automakers during the third quarter, and auto industry forecaster Cox Automotive had projected a sales decline of roughly 21%. Cox and fellow forecaster Edmunds expect third-quarter sales industrywide will be down roughly 2% compared with a year earlier. Stellantis' disappointing sales are the latest problem this week for the carmaker, which cut its 2024 profit margin forecast and has been hit with a recall involving popular plug-in hybrid electric Jeep models due to fire risks.

DETROIT — Increases in sales of electric vehicles and small crossovers helped General Motors report slightly better-than-expected sales during the third quarter. The Detroit automaker reported a 2.2% drop in third-quarter sales compared with a year earlier, slipping to 659,601 vehicles sold. GM's third-quarter sales are expected to be in line with the overall industry. Cox Automotive and Edmunds project third-quarter sales industrywide will be down roughly 2% compared to a year earlier. Still, EVs made up only 4.9% of the company's total third-quarter sales.

Boeing's 737 safety mess just got worse

AdvertisementThe National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has flagged fresh concerns with Boeing's 737 planes, saying that at least 40 airlines outside the US may be operating aircraft with faulty components. The NTSB said that Boeing's 737 flight manual instructs pilots facing a jammed rudder to overpower the system by applying "maximum force." Their Max family has been plagued by safety concerns since the two crashes of its 737 Max jetliners in 2018 and 2019 that killed a total of 346 people. Some bombshell allegations were publicized in a sprawling 204-page report released on June 17 by the Senate subcommittee that investigated Boeing's safety and quality practices. AdvertisementMerle Meyers, a former Boeing quality manager, said that Boeing's manufacturing team regularly tried to retrieve bad parts from a "reclamation" area even after they were thrown out.

The Mustang Mach-E on display at the New York International Auto Show on March 28, 2024. DETROIT — Ford Motor is aiming to boost sales of its electric vehicles by addressing potential customer concerns through a new program that includes free home-charging installation and other benefits. The "Ford Power Promise" program begins Tuesday for customers who purchase or lease a new Ford EV such as the F-150 Lightning pickup truck or Mustang Mach-E crossover. "Absolutely, we're trying to grow our business but the best way we can grow our business is to serve our customers well," Marin Gjaja, chief operating officer for Ford's Model e EV business, told CNBC. The program launches as EV sales grow at a slower rate than many previously expected.

DETROIT — The Federal Reserve's decision to cut interest rates for the first time in more than four years is expected to eventually boost new vehicle sales, but not as quickly or by as much as some may expect. The biggest near-term improvement in auto loan rates isn't expected until early next year, according to Smoke. He said that unlike the cost of home loans, which has come down in recent months, auto loan rate changes can be delayed because they're really a function of longer-term bond yields that are based on loan performances. Auto loan 30-day delinquency rates have risen considerably in recent years, according to a Thursday note from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Although they remain below the peak levels of the Great Recession, as of the end of 2023, auto loan delinquency rates exceeded pre-pandemic levels by about 60 basis points.

DETROIT — U.S. sales of new vehicles are expected to have struggled during the third quarter amid economic and political uncertainties, as well as elevated interest rates and prices, according to industry forecasters. Sales are expected to fall roughly 2% during the third quarter compared with the same time in 2023, to about 3.9 million vehicles sold, according to Cox Automotive and Edmunds.com. That would be a roughly 5% decrease compared with the second quarter of this year. "2024 has been a volatile year for the new vehicle market, and more of the same is expected in Q4," said Charlie Chesbrough, Cox Automotive senior economist. Both Cox and Edmunds expect light-duty U.S. vehicle sales to total about 15.7 million vehicles in 2024.

New York CNN —Boeing still has to make “significant changes” to improve the quality and safety of its airplanes, according to the head of the Federal Aviation Administration. “There must be a shift in the company’s safety culture to holistically address its systemic quality assurance and production issues,” he will say, according to his remarks. The incident sparked numerous federal investigations into Boeing, and numerous congressional hearings that raised questions about its quality and safety of its planes. Whitaker is set to say that Boeing must make “significant changes” to address “systemic production quality issues.” And his remarks also promise that the FAA will be more active in oversight of both Boeing and its primary supplier, Spirit AeroSystems, which Boeing is in the process of purchasing. “We have added more safety inspectors in the Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems facilities, and we will maintain our increased on-site presence for the foreseeable future,” he will say, according to his remarks.

In today’s edition, we look at how Donald Trump is handling the political fallout from CNN's bombshell report on North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson. “North Carolina is a vital part of that plan. Additionally, Republican members of the North Carolina congressional delegation, including Sens. The political fallout from Robinson’s past comments could be particularly tough for Trump because of the importance of North Carolina as one of seven key swing states on the presidential map. Washington CNN —President Joe Biden wrapped a meeting with his Cabinet on Friday, his first high-profile convening of his advisers in a year as he tries to set his post-presidential legacy. Ahead of the meeting, a White House official said Biden would instruct Cabinet members to “sprint to the finish,” as he looks to burnish legacy items while ensuring as much of his agenda is implemented before a potential second Trump presidency. And, he will tell his Cabinet to bring to him directly any hurdles or obstacles they are facing to get things done,” the official said ahead of the meeting. Administration officials have serious doubts a deal can be struck before Biden leaves office, and tensions in the region are only escalating. “The president will direct his Cabinet to get to work and make the next four months as productive as any other period in our administration,” the official said.

DETROIT – A year after unprecedented strikes by the United Auto Workers against the Detroit automakers, the union is once again threatening work stoppages that could disrupt the U.S. automotive industry. Both announcements amount to warning shots against Ford and Stellantis and center on local union contracts. Local contracts have historically taken months, if not years, to settle after a national agreement is reached. Last year's auto worker strikes came during historic negotiations over national contracts with all three Detroit automakers at once. The UAW did not immediately respond for comment Thursday regarding updates on the announcements or how many local contracts remain under negotiation.

“They have early voting, late voting, everything is so ridiculous,” Trump said onstage in Palm Beach, Florida, in July. It is great if you want to vote early,” Whatley said during a tour stop in Tampa, Florida, this summer. He voted early this month in his home state of Florida and posted a TikTok video encouraging people to vote early. He also occasionally straightly delivers a prepared remark that encourages early voting without caveating his skepticism of the practice. Still, the inconsistency of Trump’s early voting messaging has led many of his supporters toward cynicism and confusion around the topic.

CNN —The International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a presidential candidate on Wednesday after releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its members supported former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Trump campaign highlighted that support from “rank-and-file” Teamsters members following the union’s announcement that it would not be endorsing. CNN previously reported that rank-and-file union membership had large pockets of Trump support, even as major labor leaders endorsed Harris. That survey also included Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who garnered about 6% of members’ support. While union members are thought of as a traditionally Democratic voting bloc, Trump has been working to make inroads among rank-and-file members.

One patrol deputy saw the suspect vehicle at about mile marker 110 and alerted others, following it but not trying to immediately stop the vehicle, Snyder said.

DETROIT — The United Auto Workers union on Monday said it had filed federal unfair labor practice charges against Stellantis for allegedly violating contract terms and attempting to move production of the Dodge Durango out of the U.S. “In our 2023 contract, we won major gains, including a commitment to reopen an idled assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, and to build the Dodge Durango in Detroit. The union did not disclose when the attempted move occurred or where the company allegedly wanted to move Durango production. A copy of the latest National Labor Relations Board filing provided by the UAW did not mention the Durango. The UAW said Monday it has more than 24 open grievances against Stellantis regarding the company’s product and investment plans disclosed as part of the union’s contract with the automaker.
