For the most part, the market has paid little attention, but this time the message seems to have hit home. Banks stocks have been weak, and even former leaders in industrials like Parker Hannifin have been down. Fewer than 50% of NYSE stocks are above their 200-day moving average. Energy stocks are up, but even they have been selling off in the last week, despite the rise of oil. "Rising interest rates have made commodities-related areas, from industrial metals to energy, interesting for the time being," Timmer noted.

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., August 15, 2023. "While the dot plots suggest upside risks to interest rates, we retain our expectations that the hike cycle is likely done and for the Fed not to raise rates again," Mark Haefele Chief Investment Officer, UBS Global Wealth Management, said in a note. Meanwhile, weak performance of recent listings after their debut highs has dampened hopes of a likely revival in the initial public offering market amid high interest rates and broader market declines. Arm Holdings also fell 3.0% to $51.3 premarket, nearing its IPO price of $51 per share while Instacart (CART.O) lost 1.4%. The report said Google's deliberations follow a standoff between the company and Broadcom over the price of the TPU chips. Broadcom, Google and Marvell did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Broadcom is seen as the second-biggest winner from the generative AI boom after Nvidia (NVDA.O). Google co-designs its AI chips with Broadcom and tech giant has already lined up the semiconductor firm for its sixth generation processor, the analysts said. That push has accelerated this year after prices surged for Nvidia's H100, the chip that powers most generative AI apps, to nearly double its original cost of $20,000.

We started buying semiconductor giant Broadcom (AVGO) last month and added to our position a few times since it reported fiscal third-quarter results Aug. 31. Indeed, the Thursday morning sell-off in Broadcom, which was down 4.3% at its intraday lows, is an overreaction. While Broadcom's AI revenue is growth is growing incredibly fast, the rest of its semiconductor business is stabilizing after working through its post-Covid inventory gluts. In fact, with the additional of VMware, Broadcom's companywide revenues will be about half semiconductor and half software. Nvidia can't stop stunning Wall Street and the investing community in 2023, but portfolio managers say don't let the excitement overshadow other potential AI winners. "Theme after theme, transition after transition, the strong usually gets stronger," said Paul Meeks, portfolio manager at Independent Solutions Wealth Management. Some retail and professional investors seemed to interpret the news as a sign that it's "game over" for some of the other AI chipmakers, Forrest said. Forrest, who's on the hunt for growth at a reasonable price, points to companies like Advanced Micro Devices, Micron Technology . The boost to formal ties could bring billions of dollars of new private investment and some public funds to Vietnam's semiconductor industry. But industry officials, analysts and investors said that the small pool of trained experts will be a crucial hurdle for the rapid development of the chip industry. There's also a risk of inadequate supply of trained chips software engineers, said Hung Nguyen, senior program manager on supply chains at RMIT University Vietnam. The White House has not specified which segments of the chips industry in Vietnam will be prioritised, but U.S. industry executives have indicated that the back-end is a key growth sector. More private investment could come, especially if a significant share of the $500 million available under the U.S. CHIPS Act for global semiconductor supply chains ends up in Vietnam.

CNN —After roaring higher for most of this year, the rally in tech stocks sputtered in August as investors grew increasingly worried about how long the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates high. Strong economic data in recent months has investors betting that the Fed will keep interest rates higher for longer. Higher yields also mean companies will need to pay more interest on their debt in the future, eating into future cash flows. Sustained, lofty yields could particularly pose a problem for tech stocks, which often trade at a premium because of the promise of rapid growth. Any sell-off in tech could reverberate across the broader market, since those stocks are largely responsible for propelling this year’s rally.
