Read previewAmerican consumers have been frustrated by high prices over past years, but there's some good news: wages have outpaced inflation since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2020, average hourly wages for most US workers have risen faster than the consumer price index, meaning income has maintained its purchasing power against rising prices. While wage gains have outpaced inflation, it can be difficult for consumers to feel the growth, and plenty of people still miss the "good old days" of lower prices. Since spring 2023, year-over-year wage growth for production and nonsupervisory workers has consistently been above inflation. While US consumers adjust to higher prices, strong wage growth should help ease affordability concerns, Krugman wrote.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday discussed consumer behavior, saying many are fed up with high prices of certain companies' products and services, such as those in the airline or retail business. They are pushing back on high prices, they are demanding bargains," he said. To Cramer, the travel and leisure bull market might be over, noting that many airlines have recently reported disappointing quarters. Cramer suggested that consumers maybe "aren't flocking to cruises as much as they're fleeing from higher hotel prices." And she's exacting, not revenge travel, but revenge against all who've kept prices high."'

Alexander Spatari | Moment | Getty ImagesU.K. inflation held steady at the Bank of England's 2% target in June, Official National Statistics data showed Wednesday. The headline reading came in above analyst expectations at 1.9%, according to economists polled by Reuters, and was in line with the previous 2% reading in May. Sterling rose slightly shortly after the release, trading at $1.2977 by 7:21 a.m. London time. Services inflation — which is closely watched by the BOE, given its dominance within the U.K. economy and its reflection of domestically-generated price rises — remained at 5.7% in June. My drugs of choice are social media and online car shopping. While certainly not as instantly gratifying as social media, these tasks gave me a sense of accomplishment when I finished. I've stopped scrolling on Instagram when I wake up, and I no longer feel compelled to check social media incessantly. Whenever I'm working on something now, I resist the urge to watch YouTube or scroll through social media. I still use social media, though I typically schedule content ahead of time and log out after posting.

A new bifurcation in strong labor market"What we are experiencing now is a bit of a bifurcation of the labor market. Schelling says the 2024 job market for grads is strong, but focusing too much on degree attainment alone is a mistake. Some labor market experts see burdensome application requirements among the undercurrents roiling an already difficult job market for grads. In the end, he says a grad's job market's prospects will vary depending on where they are, what they are applying for, and what they want.

Usually, after a financial crisis, people spend less money and fewer new businesses launch. Welcome to the age of the side hustle, where Americans are increasingly devoted to finding extra money to spend. Here's why so many people have side hustles right now, and why economists say they're probably here to stay. For roughly half of Americans with side hustles, the extra money isn't for fun: It's a necessity, driven by financial uncertainty. $250 per month is "by no means enough to live on, [but] it's a nice amount of money," Rossman says.

Barnett says the amount of research she and Andrews poured into their relocation project prompted them to start their own travel company, Expatsi, to help other Americans explore their options to move abroad. Launching a travel company for American expatsBarnett and Andrews went back to basics to figure out what city to live in. In March 2024, Barnett and Andrews led a group of 30 Americans around Portugal for 10 days and Spain for 12 on their inaugural Expatsi scouting trip. Americans who dream of moving abroad are getting help from travel companies like Expatsi, which offers scouting trips to international cities. Why do tennis players wear white?

A muse to the designer Jean Patou, Lenglen became tennis’ first fashion icon with her signature headscarf and then-shocking shorter hems. Anne White was banned from wearing a white catsuit at Wimbledon four decades before Serena Williams caused a stir with a similar cut at the French Open. Ian Kington/AFP/Getty ImagesAt the US, French and Australian Open, players have challenged definitions of what tennis clothes can be thanks to looser rules (subject to referee opinion). Though she cited its circulation benefits following a severe blood-clot scare with the birth of her child, the French Open said it would bar the style in the future. However, the Women’s Tennis Association formally allowed it, and Williams continued to wear versions of the bodysuit at the 2019 and 2021 Australian Opens, normalizing the agile and simplified cut for the tennis court.

‘The labor market may be turning’To be clear, the jobs market is by no means imploding. Powell highlighted these changes, telling lawmakers that recent indicators “send a pretty clear signal that labor market conditions have cooled considerably” from two years. The current risk is that the Fed is injecting inflation-fighting medicine into an economy that no longer needs it. “A balanced labor market with too restrictive rates from the Fed will not remain balanced for long,” Brusuelas said. “Equally as worrisome for the Fed should be the potential for a sharper deterioration in the labor market and economic activity.

Still, the industry largely saw strong monthly job gains following the losses it faced early on in the pandemic, averaging 205,000 jobs a month in 2021. Data out Friday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed this industry saw a month-over-month job gain of 7,000; the overall nonfarm payroll job gain in June was 206,000. The industry has historically had higher rates of quits and job openings than the overall labor market, per the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Additionally, the healthcare and social assistance sectors have seen robust job growth and likely will be looking for job seekers long-term. 'Stay away from shorts'There has been a shift in recent years away from strict dress codes, Swann says. On the New York Stock Exchange trading floor, for example, jeans, shorts and other casual wear are still prohibited for personnel and guests. At every job I've had, though, (mainly in media and always based in New York), the dress codes have been way looser. My high school has even adopted a more casual dress code — abandoning the daily tie requirement and allowing sneakers — in recent years. Even if the shorts are dressier or have longer inseams, Swann says they may be perceived as unprofessional in many work environments.
