The investigation into the E. coli outbreak in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that has killed at least one person and sickened nearly 50 others increasingly points to the slivered onions served on the hamburgers. The onions in question, according to a McDonald’s spokesperson, come from a single source and are then sliced and packaged as raw vegetables in individual bags and sent to restaurants. State health officials alerted the CDC about an unusual uptick in E. coli cases on Oct. 10. There is no indication that diced onions on other McDonald’s menu items are part of the outbreak. That’s because cocoa prices have more than doubled since the start of the year and have remained at record highs, according to Wells Fargo data shared with CNN. The surging prices have caused grief for confectioners during prime chocolate sales seasons like Valentine’s Day and Easter. The company’s president, Michele Buck, said in a call in August with analysts that cocoa prices are “not sustainable,” and pointed toward higher prices. Though hope is on the horizon, experts project cocoa prices will remain high until at least September 2025. An army of political propaganda accounts powered by artificial intelligence posed as real people on X to argue in favor of Republican candidates and causes, according to a research report out of Clemson University. The network identified by the Clemson researchers included at least 686 identified X accounts that have posted more than 130,000 times since January. Many of the accounts were removed from X after NBC News emailed the platform for comment. In Arizona’s Republican congressional primary, the accounts supported Blake Masters over Abraham Hamadeh. A search on X for that hashtag shows only one other tweet, from 2018, has used it.
