Because of health issues, we intended to book refundable tickets. I called United immediately, and an agent changed those tickets to refundable for a $300 fee. And if you paid with an electronic travel certificate, or E.T.C., you get that certificate back to use for future travel. for your mistakenly booked tickets, then used that certificate to purchase your refundable tickets. So the technical “original form of payment” was an E.T.C., even if the original original form of payment was a credit card.

On Friday, I was the invited speaker for the Class Day Ceremony at the University of Chicago, my alma mater. Campus political groups issued a statement of protest and a few students walked out of the ceremony. To those of you who are protesting or planning a walkout, I thank you for not seriously disrupting my speech. And though I’m sorry you won’t hear me out, I completely respect your right to protest any speaker you dislike, including me, so long as you honor the Chicago Principles. Inside SETI’s E.T. transmission test

The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, shown here, played a key role in SETI's test by sending a message to Earth on May 24. The Allen Telescope Array in Northern California is one of three observatories that picked up the transmission. But the event also correctly simulates the fact that it wouldn’t be SETI’s role to decipher the message, just to point out its reception. However, neither SETI nor any other organization on Earth has yet picked up any intelligent signal from the stars. He composed an interstellar radio message that was sent in 1974.

Summer movie preview 2023

CNN —Most moviegoers can pinpoint one summer movie – or perhaps, a summer of movies – in their formative years that really and truly cemented their love for going to the cinema, whether it be 1975’s “Jaws,” “E.T. And while streaming has clearly siphoned off part of the audience, particularly for more serious films, what we think of as “summer movies” still have the potential to rake in cash just like the old days. (CNN and DC are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Courtesy Warner Bros. PicturesInitially meant for streaming platforms, this vehicle will herald the cinematic arrival of DC Studios’ first Latino superhero, played by Xolo Maridueña of “Cobra Kai” and “Parenthood” fame. If the fast-paced trailer is any indication, the movie looks sure to whisk those dog days of summer doldrums away quite nicely.
A Delta flight from Houston to Atlanta was delayed by three hours because bees swarmed around its wing. Photos and a video showed the large swarm of bees collecting on the tip of the plane's wing. Ground equipment was used to push back the airplane, and the bees were removed before takeoff. A Delta flight from Texas to Georgia was delayed for three hours on Wednesday after other flying objects latched onto the plane — a swarm of bees. Honey bees typically swarm when an established colony has grown too crowded and the bees fly off to establish a new one.
April 26 (Reuters) - Rogers Communications Inc (RCIb.TO), reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit on Wednesday, as gains in its wireless business helped offset weakness in its cable TV unit. The telecom giant's wireless revenue grew 10% in the first quarter. Rogers blamed increased competitive promotional activity and a decline in video and home phone revenue for the shortfall. In the three months ended March 31, Rogers added 95,000 monthly bill paying wireless phone subscribers, compared with 193,000 in the previous quarter. The Toronto Blue Jays owner is also seeing its media business recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Steven Spielberg, one of Hollywood’s most powerful filmmakers, has weighed in on a cultural debate about whether to change books, films and television shows to make them more palatable to contemporary sensibilities, calling such revisions “censorship.”Most of the discussion in recent weeks has been about publishers’ excising references to the race and physical appearance of characters in the work of deceased authors like Roald Dahl, Agatha Christie and Ursula K. Le Guin. But film and television directors, including Spielberg, have also made revisions to published work. Spielberg said in 2011 that he regretted replacing the guns that federal agents carried with walkie-talkies in the 20th anniversary edition of “E.T.,” and he later brought the guns back for its 30th anniversary release. The director went even further on Tuesday at a forum sponsored by Time magazine, condemning all such alterations to artwork. “No film should be revised based on the lenses we now are either voluntarily or being forced to peer through,” he said, adding that all movies were “a signpost of where we were when we made them and what the world was like.”

Global Executives Say Greenwashing Remains Rife
  + stars: | 2023-04-13 | by ( Rochelle Toplensky | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +4 min
Most global executives think greenwashing is widespread in their industry, and despite customers becoming more vocal about preferring sustainable brands, many companies are cutting corners on their environmental, social and corporate governance initiatives. PREVIEWThe risk of greenwashing is increasing with crackdowns on overstated green claims on both sides of the Atlantic. Despite that threat, the figures are consistent with last year’s findings: Nearly 60% say their own organization is overstating its sustainability methods. Nearly three-quarters of executives said they want to advance sustainability efforts but don’t actually know how to go about doing it. Most executives surveyed—85%—said customers and clients are becoming more vocal about their preference for engaging with sustainable brands.

In an industry of around 400,000 there are currently around 6,000 vacant tech jobs, according to government data. More than half of the country's startups held an account with SVB, companies and venture capital investors said, in some cases their only U.S. banking facility although the amounts involved are not fully known. Tech companies and investors alike said SVB was a rarity in the banking industry, familiar with Israel's tech ecosystem and offering loan terms unmatched by other banks. Citing the judicial reforms, Adam Fisher, a partner at investment firm Bessemer Venture Partners, said fewer American banks may be willing to lend to Israeli companies, which means less competition and more onerous terms. Israel's tech companies are therefore likely to flock to register as U.S. companies, while keeping R&D back home, said Yaron Samid, managing partner of the TechAviv Founder Partners fund.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, March 20 (Reuters) - U.S. hedge fund Citadel expects a tighter credit environment following the latest banking crisis but so far the economic decline is not enough to plunge commodities into the abyss, its head of commodities told Reuters. The hedge fund giant, which was based in Chicago but recently moved to Miami, manages roughly $60 billion in assets. We need to have a 5-6% global GDP cut to have a major impact on commodities," he said. Citadel, run by billionaire Ken Griffin, ended 2022 with a $16 billion gain last year, the biggest profit ever earned by a hedge fund. "The macro backdrop remains an unanswered question as OPEC assesses impact on demand.

March 14 (Reuters) - Satellite provider DirecTV on Tuesday sued Nexstar Media Group Inc (NXST.O) and two other television station owners in Manhattan federal court, claiming they violated antitrust law by scheming to drive up retransmission fees for stations broadcasting the four major networks. Pay-TV providers pay retransmission fees to station owners to broadcast their content. Twenty-seven stations owned by Mission and White Knight have been unavailable for DirecTV customers since October 2022 after they failed to agree on retransmission fees. Nexstar is expected to renegotiate its retransmission agreements with DirecTV, which is 70% owned by AT&T, possibly by later this year. The lawsuit said that by conspiring to set retransmission fees, the station groups forced providers and their customers "to pay supracompetitive prices or lose access to the most popular broadcast television programming."
Both Steven Spielberg and Noam Chomsky have expressed their doubts about artificial intelligence. Spielberg said that AI requires humans to surrender creative expression and autonomy to AI. Both Spielberg and Chomsky separately gave their views on how AI could have serious repercussions on mankind's ability to create and think independently. Chomsky, a linguistics professor, cognitive scientist, and philosopher, believes that AI tools like ChatGPT have "sacrificed creativity for a kind of amorality." In the piece published on Wednesday, Chomsky, Roberts, and Watumull wrote that AI systems like ChatGPT are incapable of independent thought.
