GLENDALE, Ariz. — Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Saturday he is being investigated for collecting a whale specimen. Kennedy said that he responded in a letter, baselessly linking the National Marine Fisheries Service with whale deaths and calling for the agency to investigate. Kennedy did not go into details about the whale incident, but his daughter had previously described a situation involving a whale that took place 30 years ago. Kennedy endorsed Trump in August and has since been on the campaign trail urging supporters to back the former president. The National Marine Fisheries Service, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, did not immediately respond to a request for comment and confirmation Saturday night.

While anyone in the world can vote, Forest & Bird now requires electors to verify their ballots after foreign interference plagued the contest before. CNN —Hawaii’s most controversial nature spot has once again become a center of concern, with 14 people recently arrested for accessing the Haiku Stairs on the island of Oahu according to officials. Eight of the 14 were arrested on September 3, although it’s not clear if they were hiking together. The Haiku Stairs, sometimes called the “stairway to heaven,” were closed to the public in 1987. In 2021, the Honolulu City Council voted to remove the Haiku Stairs. A local group called Friends of the Haiku Stairs is pushing back against the stairs’ removal, arguing that the $2.5 million process is too expensive.

But what seemed like an eight-day jaunt turned into months of questions surrounding Starliner’s ability to return the crew safely to Earth. NASAAfter nearly three months, the Starliner spacecraft returned to Earth without the two test pilots after undocking from the space station Friday night and parachuting into the New Mexico desert early Saturday. Starliner is the first US-made capsule to parachute to a ground landing, rather than splashing into the ocean. It remains to be seen how and when Starliner will be certified to carry astronauts regularly to space.

Northwest Atlantic porbeagle sharks are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. The team pieced together several factors that indicated the shark had been eaten and the tag excreted by a larger predator that gobbled up the shark, Anderson said. Unusual suspectsPorbeagles belong to a family called lamnid sharks, which also includes great white sharks and mako sharks. Gutteridge, who was not involved in the study, agrees that a white shark is the most likely culprit.

By comparing the New York ants with the European ones, Seifert was able to confirm the ant’s identity. Because the nests work together instead of against one another, they can spread faster and easily dominate an area by outcompeting native species, he added. “One of the things we know about a lot of invasive ant species is they displace the native species, and the native species that they’re displacing usually have very specialized roles in the ecosystem, so you’re sort of disrupting that ecosystem when these species get introduced,” Moreau said. Time will tell whether the ant has become more than just a nuisance and is disrupting the ecosystem, Penick said.

The state of Assam, in northeastern India, has launched a mobile app that warns people of incoming herds of wild elephants in an effort to reduce violent encounters between humans and the land giants. Clashes between humans and elephants are not uncommon in India, and have continued to rise in recent years. Human-elephant conflicts in the state caused more than 200 elephant deaths and 400 human deaths from 2017 to 2022, the organization reported. "The application will act as an early warning system about presence of wild elephants in the proximity of human settlements so as to help villagers avoid negative interface with wild elephants," Aaranyak said in a Facebook post following the app's launch this month. Along with the launch of the app, Aaranyak also released a handbook with information on using solar-powered fences to keep elephants away from humans and property.

CNN —A group of scientists has devised a plan to safeguard Earth’s species in a cryogenic biorepository on the moon. In order to reach the required temperatures on earth, a supply of liquid nitrogen, electricity and human staff are required. To reduce this risk, Hagedorn and the team thought about how cryopreservation could be achieved passively, which is impossible on Earth, and alighted on the moon. “We aren’t saying what if the Earth fails – if the Earth is biologically destroyed this biorepository won’t matter,” Hagedorn said in the statement. Sally Keith, a senior lecturer in Marine Biology at Lancaster University, who was not involved in the research, had similar concerns.

He says in the video he decided to put the dead bear in his car. He said he broached to friends the idea of taking the bear to Central Park and making it appear as if a biker had hit it. Some of the details Kennedy describes in the video appear to align with an October 2014 incident in which a dead bear cub was discovered in Central Park, attracting coverage from major news outlets around the country. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation said shortly after the bear was discovered that it had died after being hit by a car. In a caption on the post containing the video, Kennedy wrote, “Looking forward to seeing how you spin this one, @NewYorker.”
