The hardline Home Secretary Suella Braverman was fired early on Monday morning, after making inflammatory comments about the policing of pro-Palestinian protests in central London over the weekend. Cameron served as prime minister from 2010 to 2016, resigning after Britain voted to leave the European Union in a referendum that he had called. Unlike Braverman, neither Cleverly nor Cameron are likely to go off script and lash out at the police or protesters. Monday marks the second time in just over a year that Braverman has been sacked as home secretary. Under Sunak, Braverman spearheaded a heavily publicised push to clamp down on small boat crossings made by asylum-seekers.

McCarthy continually accused Gaetz of only going after him because of a House Ethics Committee probe he’s facing, a charge the GOP hardliner has repeatedly denied. “If the Ethics Committee never does anything to Gaetz, then Gaetz was successful in stopping probably what rightfully should come to him,” McCarthy said. Asked if he were concerned about Johnson’s approach to Gaetz, McCarthy said: “That’s a question for Speaker Johnson. It’s not good for the House,’” McCarthy said of Pelosi. CNN —If you don’t realize how powerful White Christian evangelicals have become, consider this:A White Christian evangelical, who has been described as “the embodiment of White Christian nationalism in a tailored suit,” is now second in line to the presidency. White evangelical Protestants make up only about 14% of Americans, and that number has been steadily shrinking. The media tends to depict White evangelicals as foaming-at-the-mouth Christian insurrectionists like some of those who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Mike Johnson is the first person to become speaker of the House who can be fairly described as a Christian nationalist, a major development in America history in and of itself. Equally important, however, his ascension reflects the strength of white evangelical voters in the House Republican caucus, voters who are determined to use the power of government to roll back the civil rights, women’s rights and sexual revolutions. “If anything, it shows us that white evangelicals still have a very strong hold on the modern Republican Party. In the 1970s, mainline Protestants dominated at 46 percent, compared with evangelical Protestants at 24 percent and Catholics at 19 percent. By the decade of the 2010s, evangelical Protestants were a commanding 38 percent of Republicans, mainline Protestants had fallen to 17 percent and Catholics had grown to 25 percent.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Before House Speaker Mike Johnson was elected to public office, he was the dean of a small Baptist law school that didn't exist. “The law school deal was really an anomaly. As dean of the proposed law school, Johnson embarked on a major fundraising campaign and described a big-dollar event in Houston with former Arkansas Gov. Bobby Jindal and Pressler, according to an account Johnson wrote in a 2011 alumni magazine. Meanwhile, the historic former federal courthouse in Shreveport that was selected as the law school’s campus required at least $20 million in renovations.

Nikki Haley is surging in support among Iowa Republicans and is now tied for second place in the battle for the GOP nomination in the Hawkeye State, according to a poll released Monday morning. Haley has the first-choice backing of 16% of Iowa Republicans – the same as Florida Gov. The poll was conducted before Trump's vice president, Mike Pence, dropped out of the race on Saturday, saying "this is not my time." Even before the realignment, Pence was struggling, having dropped from 6% support in August to 2% in the current poll. The Iowa poll reflects a new political reality for the 2024 elections, with the nominations for both major political parties appearing to be sewn up with two and a half months to go before the first nominating contest.

Here’s a (non-exhaustive) account of how Musk has fundamentally changed Twitter since he made one of the most consequential acquisitions of the social media age. Many of Musk’s content and product decisions have also led to what civil society groups have reported as a troubling spread of hateful speech on the platform. He recommended that X users monitor the Israel-Hamas conflict by following an account known for spreading disinformation, before later deleting his post. And, in an attempt to prove that former Twitter executives deliberately discriminated against conservatives on the platform, Musk provided a handpicked group of journalists with selective access to company records. It is perhaps Musk’s all-consuming presence that has most undermined what users used to love about Twitter.

He attached remarks by Johnson praising Louisiana's abortion ban and penalty of "hard labor for 1-10 years" and fines of $10,000-$100,000 for those who perform abortions. The Biden-Harris campaign and other groups circulated and posted images of three bills Johnson has sponsored that the Democrats said would "ban abortion nationwide." Already, six states – Michigan, California, Vermont, Kentucky, Kansas and Montana – have passed referendums that either enshrined abortion rights or rejected efforts to undo the right to abortion. Another referendum, one that would guarantee abortion rights, is on the ballot next month in Ohio. These numbers have Democrats believing they can keep the White House and flip the House – and Johnson has put a face to that effort.

CNN —Conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is bringing the House back to the floor Tuesday to vote on whether he will succeed ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy and finally end the chamber’s prolonged paralysis amid deep GOP divisions. But it’s not clear whether Jordan can be the one who unifies the fractured House Republican conference, with some lawmakers still opposed. Jordan can now only lose three votes, instead of four, but this is a temporary drop until the Florida congressman returns. “We need to get a speaker tomorrow,” Jordan said Monday after leaving a closed-door GOP conference meeting. Several Republicans – including from districts won by President Joe Biden – declined to say Monday evening whether they would vote for Jordan on the floor.

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan is a top contender in the race for House speaker after Kevin McCarthy's ouster this week. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe race to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House is heating up — and US aid to Ukraine may be the biggest issue on the ballot. The top contenders for the spot are Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan and Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise. In April 2022, 10 House Republicans voted against a bill allowing the Biden administration to more easily lend military equipment to Ukraine. The following month, 57 House Republicans voted "no" on a nearly $40 billion aid package for Ukraine.

To become speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy was forced to make several concessions. He agreed to change House rules to allow any member to bring a motion to vacate the speakership. In January, just a few short months after an election where Republicans just barely gained majority control of the House of Representatives, McCarthy had emerged as the frontrunner to become the next House speaker. Traditionally, it only takes one ballot and less than one day to elect a speaker, and the victor only needs a simple majority vote to ascend to the speakership. If a simple majority of House members vote in favor, McCarthy will be removed from the post and replaced with a temporary, unknown speaker to preside over the chamber until a new speaker is formally elected.

CNN —It is hard to imagine any world leader wanting to share the foreign policy swamp in which the beleaguered Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, currently finds himself. Nijjar led a group pushing for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland in northern India called Khalistan. The Biden administration can’t be blamed for prioritizing its ongoing bromance with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the bilateral relationship with Ottawa. A cynic might say that prematurely publicizing the explosive findings against India is a diversion tactic to steer attention away from the China interference file and the domestic issues piling up. Or that it is simply amateur hour at the offices of the prime minister and foreign affairs.

The markers of separatism are everywhere at the temple. Dozens of yellow flags of Khalistan — a homeland that Sikh separatists want to create in the Punjab region of India — flew in and around the grounds of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara temple near Vancouver. In a ground floor hall, where the faithful were socializing and eating, the walls are lined with scores of framed photographs of slain separatist leaders. Now, a portrait of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, holding the symbolic curved sword of devout men, has been added to a wall with four pushpins, still unframed. Mr. Nijjar was gunned down outside the temple in June, a killing that Canada has accused India of orchestrating, sparking a diplomatic skirmish that has culminated in a war of words between the two countries.
