U.S. President Joe Biden's administration is likely to tighten crude oil sanctions against OPEC member Iran in response to the Islamic Republic's backing of Palestinian militant group Hamas, according to Helima Croft, head of global commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets. ☆ Wall Street’s mood is improving — but it’s far from upbeat

CNN —Wall Street’s optimism has edged up in recent weeks after an August slump to levels not seen since the collapse of several regional banks earlier this year. CNN’s Fear & Greed Index, which tracks seven different barometers for market sentiment, has oscillated between “neutral” and “greed” territory this month after plunging to a “fear” reading mid-August. The broad-based S&P 500 index has roared 16% higher this year, propped up by Wall Street’s infatuation with artificial intelligence that’s driven a powerful rally in tech stocks. While the Fed’s policy meeting is taking place next week, there’s a laundry list of factors stoking uncertainty in the market. September has historically been the worst month for stocks, and it could live up to its reputation this year.

☆ Telluride Film Festival Goes On, Despite Anxiety Over Strikes

Majestic vistas, burbling brooks and sanguine festival goers are the hallmarks of the Telluride Film Festival, a showcase for the most prestigious films of the year. But no amount of natural beauty can overcome the low-level of anxiety that coursed through this mountain town over Labor Day weekend. With dual strikes raging in Hollywood — the writers’ strike just hit four months — no one wants to appear out of step with these unprecedented times. “It was hell getting here,” Julie Huntsinger, the executive director of the Telluride Film Festival, said in an interview. Unlike most film festivals, Telluride is more of a viewing than sales opportunity — though some filmmakers do attend in search of distribution partners.
