Read previewThe Education Department has updates on the next steps for student-loan borrowers enrolled in President Joe Biden's new repayment plan. The ruling follows a roller coaster of court decisions regarding the SAVE plan. AdvertisementThe department recently updated its guidance on what this forbearance period means for borrowers — including two avenues for borrowers to receive forgiveness credit despite the forbearance. The first option is for borrowers on SAVE to switch to a new income-driven repayment plan, including PAYE, income-based repayment, or income-contingent repayment — all of which are not blocked in court. Along with switching repayment plans to receive credit toward forgiveness, the Education Department highlighted another option for borrowers on PSLF to receive forgiveness credit: a "buy back."

Mattel Unveils Blind Barbie
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Alex Vadukul | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the decades since Barbie debuted in 1959, the doll’s plastic perfections have generated criticism for their promotion of unrealistic beauty standards. In response, Mattel has tried to create versions that are more representative of a broader range of people. On Tuesday, the company released a Barbie designed in partnership with the American Foundation for the Blind. Its satin blouse and ruffled skirt were selected after Mattel tested them for tactile satisfaction with blind and low-vision children. The doll also has bendable arms for cane use.

‘Twisters’ and the Appeal of the Sequel

That movie is “Twister,” the story of a lovably eclectic band of tornado chasers who follow soon-to-be-divorced Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt right into the eye of many storms. We got cows.”One friend said she watched it every single time she happened upon it on cable. As Janet Maslin wrote in The Times when the movie came out, “Somehow ‘Twister’ stays as uptempo and exuberant as a roller-coaster ride, neatly avoiding the idea of real danger.”This week, “Twisters,” a sequel to “Twister,” directed by Lee Isaac Chung, arrived in theaters. I didn’t have a deep-rooted relationship with the original film, but, fresh off my positive viewing experience, I didn’t feel like I needed another chapter. Why can’t we just make one good thing and then make another new thing that’s also good?

My parents were athletic people who signed us up for sports the second we were old enough. I started yoga at 13 because I desperately wanted to improve my cheerleading skills. But in the end, even with all my training in weight lifting, yoga, and gymnastics, my dream didn't come to fruition, and I traded in my pom-poms. My parents didn't teach me that I needed to start young to be an athletic adult. One does not need athletic parents to live an athletic life.

The housing market is just beginning to come out of its leanest few years in history. The supply scenarioThere is currently a 4.4-month supply of both new and existing homes for sale, according to the National Association of Home Builders, or NAHB. In fact, there is now a nine-month supply of newly built homes for sale, nearly three times that of existing homes. The latest iteration of the deal will see the buying consortium, which includes RedBird Capital Partners and KKR, invest more than $8 billion into Paramount and to acquire National Amusements. The deal gives National Amusements an enterprise value of $2.4 billion, which includes $1.75 billion in equity. American Madison Keys wept on Court One at Wimbledon as a horrifically timed injury forced her to retire against Jasmine Paolini of Italy. The challenge stood, and the ball had clipped the line by about 4mm, putting Keys down 15-30. Had there been no challenge from Keys, Paolini would likely have challenged herself, but Keys played the ball back into the court, so the point would have been replayed instead of the American losing it. From 15-30, Paolini brought up a break point, and Keys missed a forehand wide while pivoting through the shot onto her left leg, which gave way. Paolini a French Open finalist, defeated by Iga Swiatek; Keys a US Open finalist in 2017, and a Slam semifinalist five more times.

Hurricane Beryl, which devastated islands in Grenada on Tuesday and is now heading toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, has broken records as the earliest hurricane ever to reach Category 4 and Category 5 intensity in the Atlantic Basin. Wind speeds of at least 160 miles per hour were recorded on Monday. “There are so many superlatives to describe Hurricane Beryl given the time of year, the location and the strength,” said Jonathan Zawislak, a meteorologist and flight director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Dr. Zawislak is a hurricane hunter, the title held by about 30 to 40 scientists, data crunchers and pilots based in Lakeland, Fla., who fly into hurricanes on three airplanes nicknamed Gonzo, Kermit and Miss Piggy. Both Kermit and Miss Piggy are equipped with Doppler radar on their bellies and tails that scientists use to create 3-D images of the storm.

The legal roller coaster for millions of student-loan borrowers on President Joe Biden's new repayment plan continues. A court ruled that borrowers on the SAVE income-driven repayment plan can get the new benefits set to go into effect in July, like lower payments, for the time being after a legal challenges blocked their implementation. The Education Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on the stay. This means that for now, the Education Department can continue working to implement the new SAVE provisions set to go into effect this July. For now, borrowers continue to await further guidance from the Education Department.
