Stakes are high for the meeting, which takes place every five years and is known as China’s third plenum. Southwest Airlines announced Monday that it's adding former US Airways CEO Rakesh Gangwal to its board of directors. The latest defensive maneuver aims to blunt Elliott's accusations that Southwest's board is long-tenured and insular. Gangwal was CEO of the now-defunct US Airways in the late 1990s and early 2000s, before founding Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo in 2006. Southwest announced the board expansion less than a week after it adopted a shareholder rights plan, limiting investors' ability to grow their stakes beyond a 12.5% threshold. Elliott is seeking the ouster of Kelly, Southwest's CEO before becoming executive chair, and Bob Jordan, who has served as Southwest's CEO since 2022.

Working at Google for 12 years changed how Frederik Pferdt approaches his work and his daily routine. As the tech giant's first-ever Chief Innovation Evangelist, Pferdt sought to create a more cohesive structure for nurturing creativity across divisions. Pferdt created the company's Innovation Lab and co-founded the Google Garage, where he encouraged thousands of employees to collaborate and experiment on fresh ideas. Before deciding to leave Google in 2022, he learned several important lessons, including from co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, he tells CNBC Make It. But his top three lessons aren't just useful for tech workers: They can help anyone "live a more meaningful life," he says.

Tesla's stock price rose enough on Friday to wipe out its loss for the year and bring its gain for the week to 27%. The latest rally was sparked by a better-than-expected deliveries report for the second quarter on Tuesday. In April, Tesla shares hit a 52-week low after a string of troubling developments. In 2023, the SEC filed a similar complaint against Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange platform. Trump has seized on this frustration in recent months, recasting himself from a crypto skeptic into a crypto supporter. AdvertisementAs the way we save for retirement has evolved, some people are now cashing in on the golden age for retirement savings — when benefits were more generous and investments in real estate and stocks boomed. While it's still possible to achieve, a fat retirement account has become rarer. AdvertisementBack in 2007, per GAO's calculations of the Survey of Consumer Finances, around 21% of low-income households had a retirement account balance. While losses weren't as profound for those in the middle-income quintile, their retirement account balances did fall slightly from 2007 to 2019. All of that comes as retirement savings become more of an individual onus.

The three-day in-office hybrid work schedule is a "win-win-win," according to a study published in the prestigious science journal Nature. Non-manager attrition for hybrid employees had a 2.4% rate, a one-third reduction from the control group of 7.2%. When managers measured employees in nine categories of performance, execution and results, hybrid employees succeeded at the same rate. By the end of the experiment, managers positively viewed hybrid work as a potential asset to the company rather than a detriment to productivity. From an economic policymaking standpoint, hybrid work is one of the few instances where there aren't major trade-offs with clear winners and clear losers.
