REUTERS/Mark Makela Acquire Licensing RightsNov 3 (Reuters) - Church & Dwight (CHD.N) lifted its annual net sales forecast for a third time this year on Friday, boosted by high prices as well as strong demand for its household and personal care products. Consumer goods companies have been bumping up product prices to offset spiraling raw material and labor costs as well as the impact of a stronger dollar, although investors have raised concerns that higher prices might dent demand. Last week, toothpaste maker Colgate-Palmolive (CL.N) raised its annual sales and profit forecasts again, while Kleenex tissue maker Kimberly-Clark (KMB.N) has also hiked its full-year profit expectations for a third time. "We are maintaining our full-year EPS outlook, with higher revenue and gross profits being offset by higher marketing and selling, general, and administrative (SG&A) dollars," CEO Matthew Farrell said in a statement. For the reported quarter, Church & Dwight's marketing expenses rose by 19%, with the company projecting a "significant increase" in marketing spending in the current-quarter amid strong momentum.

Unlike the reaction to similarly decent results from some of its Big Tech peers this week, shares in the online retail giant Amazon climbed 5% after hours. And both Nasdaq and S&P500 futures were set to bounce into the weekend later after the cash markets closed at their lowest since May. With nominal U.S. growth running at close to 8%, depending on which inflation gauge you use, the heat is impressive. And even the racy headline GDP growth rate was below many assumptions of a 5%-plus print. That bond relief has perhaps flattered the overnight stocks bounce - although on aggregate the earnings season is pretty decent too.

To play this market, the firm recommended a "barbell" of traditional defensive stocks, some select growth opportunities and late-cycle cyclical names. Take a look below for some of Morgan Stanley's favorite stocks in this slow-growth environment. 1) Traditional Defensives Despite its year-to-date underperformance against the broader market, health care remains Morgan Stanley's preferred defensive sector. Still, popular consumer food companies Yum Brands and McDonald's are considered growth stocks based on their market cap and volatility. 3) Late-Cycle Cyclicals Several energy companies — including Marathon Oil , Valero Energy and ConocoPhillips — can shine in a late-cycle market environment, according to Morgan Stanley.

Investors should focus on stocks with strong balance sheets as these companies tend to be more resilient against high interest rates, according to Goldman Sachs. Bond yields have been surging lately as the Federal Reserve signaled higher rates for longer in its inflation fight. Higher rates make it more expensive to borrow, and they effectively lower the present value of any future earnings. Stocks with strong balance sheets have outperformed those with weak ones by 4 percentage points since the start of September, Goldman said. Meanwhile, investors are rotating away from stocks perceived to be vulnerable to the higher rate backdrop, including those with levered balance sheets, Goldman said.

Markets could remain under pressure through the end of the year, and high dividend stocks are one option to help investors through the uncertainty, according to Morgan Stanley. Investors are also assessing pressures on the market driven by the surprise attack on Israel by Palestinian militant group Hamas over the weekend. To play another potential breakdown in the market, Morgan Stanley highlighted several dividend stocks that combine yield (how much a company pays out in dividends each year), dividend growth (how much that dividend grows over a period of time) and stability, and that look attractive on a three- to five-year basis. So-called dividend aristocrats are typically defined as companies that have raised their per-share payout every year for at least 25 years. Wolfe strategist Chris Senyek said in a note to clients Wednesday that some of those aristocrats also score highly on another quality indicator — net stock buybacks. "We've found Consistent Buybacks (companies with a net share count decline for at least 10 consecutive years) and Dividend Aristocrats (25 years of consistent dividend growth) to be the top performing cash usage themes over the past 20+ years. And of the 22 analysts who cover the stock, 12 have hold ratings and one has a sell, according to Refinitiv. The Invesco BuyBack Achievers ETF (PKW) , which buys companies that have reduced their share count by more than 5% over the past year, is up about 9.8% year to date.

Specifically, the central bank said it would offer to buy 10-year JGBs at 1.0% in fixed-rate operations, instead of the previous rate of 0.5% - tolerating the wider band for bond market borrowing rates. With July core inflation in Tokyo falling back to a 10-month low, the need for tightening may be ebbing anyway. Friday's data is expected to show another drop in the Fed's favoured core PCE inflation gauge in June. For markets more broadly, Friday seems a little scattergun so far after a heavy week of macro policy and corporate news. U.S. Treasury yields fell back from two-week highs hit after the punchy U.S. economy readouts and central bank moves, with the 2-to-10 year yield curve steepening as recession fears abate.

Dark matter, invisible material whose presence is known mainly based on its gravitational effects at a galactic scale, would be a small but crucial ingredient in dark stars. Conditions in the early universe may have been conducive to formation of dark stars, with high dark matter densities at the locations of star-forming clouds of hydrogen and helium.
