A Chicago police officer died following a shooting on Monday night in the East Chatham neighborhood on the city’s South Side, authorities said. As officers approached the vehicle, rapid gunfire erupted from one of the individuals, and the officer was struck multiple times, Snelling said. The wounded officer was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The officer, who was 26 years old, served with the Chicago Police Department for nearly three years, Snelling said. CNN —Several non-credible bomb threats that briefly disrupted voting at two Georgia polling places originated from Russia, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters Tuesday. “Anything that can get us to fight amongst ourselves - they can count that as a victory.”Raffensperger, a Republican, did not elaborate on how exactly state officials determined the bomb threats came from Russia. CNN —One of the driest months in United States history is coming to a close after causing the worst drought in more than 20 years in parts of the East as temperatures soar well above average there. As of October 25, the average precipitation across the Lower 48 was less than an inch. Only five months in the 129 years of records have ended with less than an inch of average precipitation over the Lower 48. Flash drought happens when drought conditions increase quickly, rather than over a multi-month or yearly timeframe, according to NOAA. It’s the state’s worst drought level since 2002.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —The Russian Defense Ministry claimed Tuesday it had taken the Ukrainian town of Selydove, southeast of the key city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. Russian forces have been advancing on Selydove in the last several weeks, according to frontline reports. Selydove was an important staging area for Ukraine’s defenses and a key foothold to prevent Russia’s advance toward Pokrovsk. On Sunday, a spokesman for a Ukrainian national guard brigade fighting in Selydove told CNN the town had been “constantly attacked from several directions” for a week.
