After a stuttering start to 2024, the S & P 500 has found its way into positive territory and the benchmark seems poised to establish a new all-time close Friday, surpassing the 4,800 level which served as resistance back in January of 2022. My optimism on U.S. equities is predicated on the continued strength of the U.S. consumer and our economy but, I believe the real reason for the S & P 500 to possibly run up and kiss 5,000 is because of the underinvested bears. One word we will all say (most likely at nauseum) in 2024 is Optimus (Tesla's bipedal robot). Optimus was toting a gun and fired multiple shots on the new Cybertruck to reveal its bulletproof capabilities. Musk said Optimus would use the same technology and software as Tesla's vehicles, such as the Autopilot system and the Full Self-Driving computer. One of the multiple benefits germane to Tesla stock would be having these Optimus bots assist on the Tesla production line. Occidental CEO Vicki Hollub said the company is purchasing CrownRock to increase its scale in the Midland Basin. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) Index , which closed Friday at 12.63 is currently approaching 5-year lows. It is calculated from the prices of S & P 500 index options. Investors can speculate in VIX futures or VIX futures options, but understanding the futures "term structure" (how the prices of various futures of different expiration relate to each other) isn't that straightforward. Consider the following chart of the Barclays iPath S & P 500 (VXX) , an exchange traded note which is intended to track the S & P 500 short-term VIX futures total return index vs. the VIX Index itself. If one is inclined to make a bullish bet, but is reluctant to get caught "chasing" after the market has already rallied sharply, perhaps we can take advantage of the fact options prices are well below average.

REUTERS/Ina Fassbender/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - The broad-based downturn in euro zone manufacturing activity eased slightly last month but the sector remained deeply rooted in contractionary territory, prompting factories to trim staffing levels for a sixth straight month. HCOB's final euro zone manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, rose to 44.2 in November from October's 43.1, above a preliminary estimate of 43.8. An index measuring output, which feeds into a composite PMI due on Tuesday and seen as a good gauge of economic health, climbed to 44.6 from 43.1. "November has not been the prettiest, and this does not refer only to the weather but also to the situation in the manufacturing sector of the euro zone," said Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank. The employment index dropped to a low not seen since August 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was cementing its grip on the world.

In a market that is trending higher, most stocks are trading at levels where the risk/reward is unfavorable to enter new long positions. During times like these, a contrarian view is required to find bullish opportunities where the risk/reward balance is still favorable. One such stock that is unloved by most analysts and trading at a new 52-week low is Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) , but that is why I think it's worth investigating. After declining nearly 40% over the past 12 months, BMY is starting to approach levels that should interest a long-term investor. Additionally, multiple drugs in their pipeline that have been approved this past year are starting to see strong quarter-over-quarter sales growth.

Hybrid vehicle market share has picked up pace in 2023 despite all the investment pouring into EVs. From October 2022 to October of this year, total vehicle market share for hybrids grew from 6.5% to 11.4%, according to data from Edmunds. Over the same time period, EV market share growth was more sluggish, expanding from 6% to 7.5%. Toyota 's 2024 Prius, often called the "gold standard" in hybrid vehicles, was named MotorTrend's car of the year. The uptick in hybrid sales won't likely spell doom and gloom for the EV market over the long-term.

"These expectations have risen in spite of the fact that consumers have taken note of the continued slowdown in inflation," survey Director Joanne Hsu said in a statement. But progress this year has been inconsistent, and Fed officials remain wary of the potential for a reversal. That said, the University of Michigan survey results are at odds with other measures of inflation expectations that have shown they have in fact been moderating. A New York Fed survey of consumers last week, for instance, showed inflation expectations over both one-year and five-year horizons eased in October even as the Michigan survey showed them accelerating. Market-based measures of inflation expectations are also declining.
