Under the deal announced in January, the companies will set up a new entity made up of Arcelik's European units such as major domestic appliances, small domestic appliances and consumer electronics and Whirlpool's European business. The EU competition watchdog can either clear the deal with or without seeking remedies after its preliminary review or it can open a four-month investigation if it has serious concerns. The UK competition agency is also assessing the deal, with a decision due by Sept. 28.

The protests, which are taking place in areas governed by President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, have so far shown no signs of abating. The Druze are Syria’s third largest religious minority making up 3% to 4% of the country’s population, according to Minority Rights Group International. While the largest protests are clustered around al-Sir Square in Suwayda city, other, smaller ones are scattered across the governorate, Marouf said. “If protests spread deeper into regime territories, those chances (of violent crackdown) will surge.”All eyes are on Assad’s next moves. If Assad attends, it would be his first appearance on the world stage since the start of the civil war in 2011.

Thursday's settlement covers 17 models of electric radiant heat cooktops under the JennAir, KitchenAid and Whirlpool brands. The CPSC and Whirlpool announced a recall of about 26,300 cooktops in August 2019. Under its settlement agreement, Whirlpool agreed to maintain controls to ensure its compliance with federal consumer product safety laws. In a statement, Whirlpool said it acted "appropriately" upon identifying the defect, including by recalling the cooktops under the CPSC's Fast Track recall program. Whirlpool also said it had reached out to cooktop owners and offered to replace their appliances for free.

Prosecutors have put a political whirlpool in motion. Presidential candidates converged again this month on the Iowa State Fair to flip sizzling pork chops, nibble peculiar speared foods, and scout for undecided caucus-goers. Yet history suggests most Iowans, and even most Republicans, are more into the fair rides and butter sculptures than primary politics. In the November 2016 election, Iowa’s 2.4 million adults cast 1.6 million votes, 801,000 for Donald Trump. How many Iowans were counted in that year’s GOP caucus?

I advise young engineers today to work for Fortune 500 companies, not Big Tech. Today, however, he's working on a project for a different kind of tech company: John Deere. There is no magic at Big Tech companies, there's only money. And Fortune 500 companies simply don't have the luxury of buying talent just to park it. Today, all companies are tech companies, and they all want to see more recurring revenue in their business models, which means they need smart, restless engineers.

Arguments for calling a halt to the credit tightening were strengthened on Monday as early July business surveys for the euro area came in well below forecasts, showing a deepening contraction in overall activity this month. The euro dropped more than half a percent against the dollar as euro government debt yields fell back, with an indecisive weekend election result in Spain adding pressure. With the ongoing slide in manufacturing still the biggest drag and due in large part to China's spluttering post-Covid recovery, further turbulence in China's property markets will only increase the anxiety. For Wall St, the looming Fed decision dominates this week - with a check on U.S. July business surveys topping the data on Monday's calendar in another huge corporate earnings week. U.S. Treasury yields fell back, but the dollar (.DXY) climbed against the euro, yuan and sterling - also hit by disappointing UK business readings for July.

The S & P 500 had just sustained its worst calendar-year loss in half a generation. Textbook consolidation Last week's modest 1.4% decline in the S & P 500 did little to alter either the favorable underlying market trend or the notion that more consolidation might be in store. The median year-end S & P 500 target among Street strategists is 4250, 100 points below Friday's close, and the most-bullish forecast is for about a 5% further gain. Whirlpool and Cabri told a Delaware federal court they would dismiss the case with prejudice, which means it cannot be refiled. Representatives for Whirlpool, Cabri and Haier Europe did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday. It said Haier had hired Cabri for its own laundry division because he knew Whirlpool's trade secrets and that it would be impossible for him to work there without disclosing them. A federal judge rejected Whirlpool's bid to block Cabri's move last May, finding the Delaware court lacked jurisdiction over the trade-secret allegations. The case is Whirlpool Corp v. Searches on Google for air purifiers have increased 16 fold since Monday, according to Google trends. Johnson Controls, which has a number of air filters on the market, has also seen its stock price soar. The air purifier market is poised to grow as climate change increases air pollution and exacerbates breathing difficulties. Recent data shows that China is also contending with worse-than-expected consumer spending, slowing manufacturing and weak home sales. What it means for markets: US-based companies doing business in China stand to lose if the economy continues on a downward trajectory. Qualcomm (QCOM), with a 67% exposure rate to China, issued disappointing forward guidance during earnings last month, citing China’s slow recovery. JD.com (JD), one of the largest Chinese companies trading in the United States, has fallen by nearly 36% this year. Joined-up G7 is best China deterrent

The best chance of steering between these twin evils is for the G7 to agree on a strong deterrence strategy. This would make it harder for China to hold G7 countries to ransom if they came to Taiwan’s aid. The United States is also leaning on its allies to stop China from acquiring militarily useful technology such as advanced semiconductors. CONTINGENCY PLANSThe other plank of a G7 deterrence strategy is contingency planning for what the allies would do if China invaded Taiwan. This would ideally involve building consensus about how the United States would respond to escalating tensions.

Otherwise, a packed earnings season dominates this week's investment radar as more than a third of S&P500 companies report. Including Intel (INTC.O), those five tech stocks have accounted for two-thirds of the S&P500's gains this year - with the Artificial Intelligence craze sparked by the emergence of ChatGPT adding a new non-cyclical attraction to the sector. But before markets get a taste of Q1 tech profits, the reverberations from last month's banking blow-up are still being absorbed. European stocks were slightly negative and U.S. stock futures also marginally in the red ahead of Wall Street's open. The dollar was mixed - up against Asian currencies but off against European currencies amid hawkish European Central Bank soundings on interest rates.
