SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A group of residents have sued a public utility company in the U.S. Virgin Islands after authorities there reported finding high levels of lead and copper in the tap water on St. Croix. He said the agency acted swiftly and transparently after the test results became available and that officials are still working to improve water quality in St. Croix. “What people are looking for is justice.”The investigation into the state of tap water in St. Croix began in late September, following complaints of reddish-brown water on the island of more than 50,600 people. In late October, the local government announced that officials found high levels of lead and copper and warned people not to drink their tap water. She also criticized the government for announcing a couple of weeks ago that lead levels were low or undetectable at samples taken from various schools across St. Croix.

On the Caribbean island of St. Croix, officials avoided some of those pitfalls and quickly told residents of the results. For lead testing, workers usually take water from a household faucet. It is some of these tests that first recorded astronomically high lead levels. Instead, it's brass fittings that contain lead and can corrode into the water, Smith said.

Michael Regan, the administrator of the EPA, speaks onstage with Daniel Yergin, the vice chairman of S&P Global, during the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston, Texas, U.S., March 9, 2023. The Community Change Grants are the single largest investment in environmental justice that has been made by an administration, and a key measure to achieve the administration's goal of ensuring that 40% of federal clean energy investment benefits flow to disadvantaged communities. The Biden administration's spending on climate and environmental justice measures has been under scrutiny by Republican lawmakers seeking to undercut the president's climate agenda. "This historic, unprecedented funding has the promise to turn disadvantaged and overburdened areas into healthy, resilient, and thriving communities for current and future generations,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan said. The EPA will review applications on a rolling basis and encouraged applicants to apply as early as possible.

Daylight saving time is the practice of moving clocks forward by one hour during summer months so daylight lasts longer into the evening. WHY WAS DAYLIGHT SAVING CREATED IN THE US AND HOW DID IT START? No, Hawaii and Arizona, with the exception of Navajo Nation, do not observe daylight saving time. While daylight saving time is widespread across the United States, 19 states have passed legislation to permanently use daylight saving time if Congress were to allow it, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The U.S. is not ending daylight saving any time soon, though there is an effort in the federal government to pass the so-called Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent.

CNN —Nigeria’s government is celebrating a “landmark victory” after a UK court ruled it was not liable for a multibillion-dollar payout earlier awarded to a private firm over a failed gas project. The company had sued for compensation over lost profits following the collapse of a 20-year deal with Nigerian authorities in 2010 to build a gas processing facility. The awarded sum and accumulated interest had now exceeded $11 billion, nearly half of Nigeria’s federal budget for this year. Disagreements after both parties blamed each other for defaulting on obligations led to the failed deal and sparked a lengthy legal battle. Lawyers for the Nigerian government had argued that P&ID induced the country’s officials with bribes for the contract to be awarded to the firm.

Sand flies are tiny tan flies — about the quarter of the size of a mosquito — that live in warm, wet, rural and forested areas. These patients all had leishmaniasis skin infections, which start with a small bump that erupts into ulcerous sores days to weeks after a sand fly bite. Like other types of insects that are finding new habitats as the climate warms, sand flies have been expanding their range in recent years. It’s not clear whether sand flies in all these states have transmitted infections to humans, however. When sand flies bite the infected rats, they can pick up the parasite and then pass it to humans.

"The hurricane is likely near its peak intensity, although some small fluctuations cannot be ruled out today," the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, with Norma still some 245 miles (394 km) away from the port city Manzanillo. The forecaster said Norma would likely begin weakening from Friday through the weekend, and approach land from late Friday. Baja California is home to the Los Cabos beach resorts. A European Union flag flutters outside the congress palace ahead of the European Political Community summit in Granada, Spain, October 4, 2023. The council said all three jurisdictions either lacked tax information or failed to deliver on commitments regarding governance and transparency reforms. Barring Russia, it said in a statement, the EU list only includes "small and vulnerable countries like Belize yet fails to include any EU member state" which were given the same Global Forum rating. Oxfam's EU tax expert Chiara Putaturo also slammed the list as "toothless" for not screening the United States, the UK, or EU states such as Luxembourg and Malta, adding "countries deemed too big to be listed can no longer escape scrutiny."
