LAMPEDUSA, Italy, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on Friday for the European Union to act jointly "with a naval mission if necessary" to prevent migrants crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa. Meloni posted a video message on social media promising tough action in response to a surge in migrant arrivals this week which have overwhelmed the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa. "I intend to reiterate a request for an immediate EU mission to block the departure of migrant boats," said Meloni, for whom the swelling number of arrivals has become a major political headache. It's part of the decades-long trend in which Americans have scaled back their charitable giving. There's evidence that this shift has impacted charitable giving. From 2000 to 2016, the share of Americans giving to religious causes fell from roughly 47% to 32%. Other donors have shifted their giving to political causes that wouldn't be classified as charitable giving either. Looking forward, Birkholz said he's optimistic the total giving figure will bounce back in 2023.

Pot producer Canopy raises going concern doubts, shares tumble

June 23 (Reuters) - Shares of Canada's Canopy Growth (WEED.TO) fell 6.5% on Friday after the pot producer posted a wider quarterly loss over the previous year and raised doubts about the company's ability to continue as a going concern. Canopy said it identified certain trends in the booking of sales for BioSteel, leading it to launch an internal review. As a result of the review, Canopy said it has let go of several members of BioSteel's leadership team. Sarwat added that Canopy was still burning through cash and including going concern risk in the filing makes Canopy USA's rationale unclear, as cash won't flow back to the U.S. unit without federal legalization. Canopy is eyeing an entry into the U.S. cannabis market through Canopy USA.

Embattled network Cheddar News cut six roles in a small layoff round in April, Insider has learned. Affected employees previously worked on Cheddar's highly-regarded YouTube team. Cheddar News quietly laid off half a dozen staffers who formerly worked on its highly-regarded YouTube team creating original video content, Insider has learned. As Insider reported earlier this year, sources at Cheddar said management had indicated cost-cutting and profitability concerns were behind the shift in strategy away from creating original YouTube content, which Cheddar had done for years. The 11-times world champion will be able to surf and earn ranking points at the remaining events in 2023 and for the first half of the 2024 tour, the WSL said. "Slater's ranking points will also give him the opportunity to compete for provisional qualification for the Olympic Games Paris 2024," the WSL said. Slater was knocked out by Australian Liam O'Brien early in the Margaret River Pro last week, which left him below the mid-season cut line. Some surfing media criticised the wildcard decision, saying it was motivated by commercial considerations and made a mockery of the WSL's ranking system. France's Johanne Defay was also awarded a wildcard to continue on the Women's Championship Tour after falling well outside the mid-season cut.
None of the agencies disputed the allegation, and each paid penalties of $5,050, the maximum state levy for a child labor violation. The U.S. and Alabama investigations began after a Reuters report last July first exposed the use of child labor at Hyundai parts makers in the state. The U.S. Department of Labor said in February the number of child labor violations in 2022 had soared by nearly 70% compared with the tally recorded in 2018. They said false documentation, even shoddy credentials like those filed by the boy's employers, makes child labor laws difficult to enforce. An Alabama labor department spokesperson told Reuters the agency is still working to determine who exactly hired the child to work at Hyundai Glovis.
From the 15th to the 19th century, 6 million Africans were kidnapped and forcibly transported across the Atlantic by Portuguese vessels and sold into slavery, primarily to Brazil. But so far Portugal has rarely commented on its past and little is taught about its role in slavery in schools. Reparations and public policies to fight inequalities caused by Portugal's past were essential, Cardoso said. "We continue to suffer in Brazil the effects of a legacy of slavery," Almeida said in a statement. Europe's top human rights group previously said Portugal had do more to confront its colonial past and role in the transatlantic slave trade in order to help fight racism and discrimination today.
Fox Corp. and its TV networks agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit this week, but the media giant's legal headaches don't end there. Still hanging in the balance is voting software company Smartmatic USA's defamation case, which is seeking $2.7 billion in damages – over $1 billion more than Dominion initially sought in its lawsuit. Smartmatic, like Dominion, filed its defamation lawsuit against Fox for spreading false claims that its voting software helped rig the 2020 election that saw Joe Biden triumph over Donald Trump. Although Smartmatic's lawsuit was filed shortly ahead of Dominion's in 2021, the pace of the case has lagged in comparison. It remains unclear how or whether the settlement between Fox and Dominion will affect Smartmatic's case.
