On 9/11, the first meme dropped at 8:56 a.m. "That is a big fucking hole in the World Trade Center sirs!" 9/11 jokes, in other words, often have very little to do with 9/11. AdvertisementUnlike Domineau or those anonymous SomethingAwful posters, many people making and spreading 9/11 memes today are too young to remember 9/11, if they were alive at all. She says 9/11 memes have always been popular with her cohort. Domineau says it's only natural for young people to take 9/11 jokes to the next extreme.

All four were in New York on Wednesday for a commemoration event at Ground Zero in Manhattan. Harris and Biden then traveled to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Flight 93 memorial. At that ceremony, Biden placed his hand on the wreath as the small group he was with bowed their heads. During that ceremony, the president falsely claimed he visited Ground Zero “the next day” after the attacks. In 2016, both Trump and Hillary Clinton attended memorial events marking the 15th anniversary of 9/11 at Ground Zero.

In recent years wildfires have regularly burned in and around Wrightwood, a picturesque mountain town 60 miles east of Los Angeles known for its 1930s cabins. In neighboring Orange County, firefighters used bulldozers, helicopters and planes to control a rapidly spreading blaze called the Airport Fire that started Monday and spread to about 3 square miles in only a few hours. Concialdi said the fire was burning away from homes in Orange County, but there are 36 recreational cabins in the area. Residents along the southern edge of Big Bear Lake were told to leave the area Tuesday night, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The blaze had charred more than 51 square miles of grass and brush and blanketed the area with a thick cloud of dark smoke.

The long and complex political legacy of 9/11

Trump and Harris — who had not met until Tuesday night at their fiery debate – even shook hands for the second time in less than 24 hours. 9/11 is now far enough in the past that it’s taking on a historic hue. The gathering of past, present and future US leaders Tuesday was a reminder of the still unfolding cascade of political consequences triggered by the attacks. And, underscoring the passage of time, some young voters born after 9/11 will this year vote in their second presidential election. But the world’s worst terror attack still has a powerful psychological and political half-life and is embedded deep in America’s soul, as we are reminded every September.

The relaunched Hamburg Bunker is now packed with two restaurants, a five-story Hard Rock Hotel and a newly built pyramid-like rooftop bar and garden from which greenery flows abundantly over the concrete facade. Five people have developed Legionnaires' disease following possible exposure to contaminated water droplets from a cooling tower in downtown Lincoln, New Hampshire, state health officials say. Testing by the DHHS and the state Department of Environmental Services confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria contaminating the cooling tower. Four of the five people diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease were initially hospitalized and later discharged. “RiverWalk is partnering with DHHS to address the contamination, with additional test results for the cooling tower expected next week,” the release said. However, it can cause a more serious pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease, “which can be fatal if left untreated,” the release said.

The US Forest Service manages rentals of repurposed fire lookouts, but these historic properties are hard to come by. Dabney Tompkins and Alan Colley decided to build their own tower in the early 2000s. "We particularly liked the picture on the front cover," Colley said. The couple attempted to book a stay at the first lookout that caught their eye, but they were out of luck — it was booked through the next year. They managed to secure a last-minute overnight at a different fire-lookout tower, prompting the Portland-based pair to spend the next several years renting similar properties from the US Forest Service.

A combination of technologies — from various forms of batteries to other energy storage methods — will likely be necessary to increase capacity. A view of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, in December 2022. Two energy storage experts contacted by CNN questioned if the economics of a skyscraper battery could work, given the space that would need to be used for energy storage and the structural changes that would be needed to support the extra weight. Fifty years ago on Wednesday, the French high-wire artist Philippe Petit carried his life a quarter of a mile through the New York City sky on a tightrope. When asked why, he said it was simply because the World Trade Center towers were there. “If I see two towers, I have to walk,” he told The New York Times. We are living in high-wire times, with anxiety and fracture all around us, and it is the job of the artist to show that we can, in fact, get from one side to the other. He didn’t defy gravity; he aligned himself with it, and in so doing he allowed us to defy our own possible falling down.

Behind the scenes, 5G infrastructure is powering live broadcasts worldwide and the moments spectators and athletes capture and post on social media. After the event, it became a hub for YouTubers and other content creators because of its gigabit-speed internet connectivity. In the lead-up to the Games, connectivity infrastructure was embedded in the London Underground light-rail network and the Westfield shopping center in Stratford. 5G technology wasn't adopted at a consumer level until 2019, and Japan's 5G-infrastructure rollout was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the 5G technology was fast enough that train riders could watch the opening ceremony on their personal devices.
