The three eggs Mrs. Pickles, a 53-year-old radiated tortoise, laid at the Houston Zoo may have been a surprise. But they were far from accidental. A zoo keeper noticed Mrs. Pickles digging in the ground at closing time one day in October, a sign the critically endangered reptile was about to lay eggs. What followed was part of a carefully managed global breeding program.
Energy was the second-best-performing sector of the S & P 500 last week, as investors flocked back into the stocks amid a recent dip in oil prices. A wind and snow storm builds along the mountains of the Spirit Mountain Wilderness as viewed from Highway 163 on March 10, 2021 in Laughlin, Nevada. The Biden administration on Tuesday will establish two new national monuments in the Southwest, a decision that will protect the Spirit Mountain area in Nevada and Castner Range in Texas from development. The proclamations are part of the administration's commitment to protect one-third of the country's lands and waters by 2030. The Spirit Mountain area, also known as Avi Kwa Ame, would be the largest protected area under the administration so far and only the second monument designated to honor Indigenous tribes while conserving public land. Avi Kwa Ame is considered sacred by tribes including Mojave, Chemehuevi and Paiute.

Baseball’s Given Up to the Ghosts

Major League Baseball has decided it can live with ghosts. Specifically, its “ghost runner,” the runner automatically placed on second base at the start of each extra-inning frame until the game is finished. This daffy device was put in place during MLB’s abbreviated Covid season in 2020, and it has stuck around since in an effort to generate quick runs, avoid deep extra-inning slogs and burned-out bullpens, and complete the average baseball game in less time than it takes to ride a tortoise from Chicago to San Diego.

Big oil sees political pushback on buybacksFuel prices at a Chevron gas station in Menlo Park, California, on Thursday, June 9, 2022. In the market, and at the oil companies headquarters, it seems the opinions issued from the White House aren't much of a factor in setting financial priorities. The benchmark now is to spend roughly a third of operating cash flow on capital investment, a third on dividends and a third on stock buybacks. Exxon made $76.8 billion in operating cash flow, invested $18 billion back into the business, spent $14.9 billion on dividends and $15.2 billion in stock purchases, according to its cash flow statement. Jan 24 (Reuters) - U.S. oil refining margins on Tuesday hit a three-month high and are likely headed higher, analysts said, as unplanned refinery outages weigh on already-tight fuel supplies. The outages have pushed up gasoline prices in Texas and Oklahoma this year ahead of what is expected to be a heavier than usual turnaround season for refineries. The rising prices and margins are unusual for this time of year, when travel falls. Average gasoline prices in Texas hit about $3.07 a gallon on Tuesday, up almost 44 cents from a month ago, according to the AAA motor group. A diesel producing unit at PBF Energy's (PBF.N) Chalmette, Louisiana, refinery was shut following a fire on Saturday.
Jim Cramer's 5 rules for earnings season

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday went over a list of do's and don'ts for investors ahead of a busy period of earnings. The upcoming earnings season, which kicks off this week, features quarterly updates from the nation's largest banks, manufacturers and airlines. That means investors shouldn't make investing judgments solely based on how many companies perform compared to analysts' consensus estimates. In other words, investors shouldn't buy a stock unless they've done the homework themselves to research the company. Cramer added that a chief executive's willingness to buy back stock after the company reports earnings is yet another sign that investors should buy the stock themselves.

The sounds of not-so-silent creaturesJorgewich-Cohen suspects that people don't notice turtle sounds very often because it's hard to hear them through water.

watch nowChina's reopening after the pandemic will be a bigger driver for oil prices than the cap on Russian oil, Singapore Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan told CNBC on Tuesday. "Now that has profound implications for the global economy, more so than an oil price cap." Balakrishnan's comments come after the Group of Seven's $60 price cap for Russian seaborne oil and ban on Russian crude took effect Monday. Oil prices climbed in Asia trading Monday after China, the world's largest oil importer, signaled further easing of Covid-19 measures. "The factor that will drive [China's oil] demand higher ... will be obviously the reopening of the economy, but more importantly, building an inventory," he said.

"I remember reading a book once called, 'Sacred Cows Make the Best Burgers,'" Poirier said at the company's investor day. Calgary, Alberta-based TC is widely known for its Keystone oil pipeline, a critical artery for moving Canadian oil to U.S. refiners that dominated headlines over the past decade for an expansion that ultimately failed. Keystone could fetch TC C$12.8 billion, said CIBC analyst Robert Catellier in a note. He added that reducing TC's oil exposure would help it reach its emissions-reduction goals. TC's stake in the Millennium natural gas pipeline in New York state is another logical sale candidate and could fetch $1 billion, said Scotiabank analyst Robert Hope.
Anne Heche’s estate has been sued by the woman whose Los Angeles home was destroyed in the car crash that ended the actor’s life. “Thankfully, (Mishele) and her pets, which she regards as family, avoided death that day,” the lawsuit said. The Aug. 5 crash, which caused a fire, was ruled an accident by the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office. A Los Angeles police spokesman had previously said police were investigating the crash as a felony DUI collision. Mishele's lawsuit asks for at least $2 million, but the claim could be more depending on the total value of damages from the crash.
In the three years to the end of 2021, Alphabet, Meta and Snap (SNAP.N) hared ahead. The upshot was the Big Tech groups boasted 2021 revenue of $380 billion, most of which was digital advertising. Alphabet, Meta and Snap saw revenue up a miserly 2.4%, on average. For one thing, digital ad giants’ stellar 2021 made maintaining the pace trickier. Meta and Alphabet will still see some of this cash given traditional ad players will use platforms like Google for these big clients’ digital advertising.
Energy has been a key political topic this year, with soaring oil prices leading to discussions about how to boost U.S. energy production. "Sector-focused policy changes would be even more limited under a divided Congress than under Republican control. That could be good news for the clean energy policies pushed in the Inflation Reduction Act, which included several provisions to boost green energy that some Republicans opposed. Some progressive lawmakers had resisted the idea, which could ease the process for approving new oil pipelines and green energy projects. Pipeline funds Tortoise North American Pipeline fund (TPYP) and Global X MPL & Energy Infrastructure ETF (MLPX) were outperforming traditional energy funds on Wednesday, but still lower as oil prices declined.
Even if the election results match expectations, stocks may still rally as some unknowns are removed. Broad sector ETFs from firms like iShares, State Street and Vanguard are one way to play these sectors, offering cheap broad exposure. For example, the Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI) and Vanguard Communications Services ETF (VOX) both have an expense ratio of 0.10%. Under-the-radar elections Federal elections are not the only contests on Tuesday that could move stocks. The biggest marijuana ETFs — AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS) and ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF (MJ) — are each down more than 50% for the year.
