German unions criticise possible Deutsche Bank job cuts

FRANKFURT, June 23 (Reuters) - Deutsche Bank's (DBKGn.DE) reported plans for possible job cuts at its German retail operations were roundly criticised by a union on Friday, foreshadowing tough labour negotiations ahead. "One can only shake one's head at Deutsche Bank, once again," Stephan Szukalski, chairman of the DBV bank union, said as Claudio de Sanctis prepares to take over as head of the German retail business on July 1. Reuters GraphicsDeutsche Bank declined to comment on any job cut plans or the union reaction to reports of them. The reduction in retail jobs is in the planning phase and still subject to discussions with unions and worker representatives, Reuters has reported. Deutsche Bank has in the past announced job cuts that never materialized.

The researchers studied neck and head remains of two species of Tanystropheus, detecting bite marks and other signs of trauma indicating decapitation. The larger species, the one that ate fish and squid, reached 20 feet (6 meters) long, though this individual was about 13 feet (4 meters). The smaller species was about 5 feet (1.5 meters) long, with teeth indicating a diet of soft-shelled invertebrates like shrimp. Useful in hunting, extreme neck elongation was common among marine reptiles spanning about 175 million years during the age of dinosaurs. Sure, there are other animals with a very long neck, but not a neck that is this long, this stiff and this lightweight, with very long, string-like neck ribs.

Fossils Show How Long-Necked Reptiles Lost Their Heads
  + stars: | 2023-06-19 | by ( Asher Elbein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In 1830, Henry De la Beche, an English paleontologist, composed a painting of “Duria Antiquior,” a vision of Mesozoic oceans. When picturing a long-necked marine reptile, he depicted its throat clamped between the jaws of a monstrous Ichthyosaurus. Almost two centuries have passed without direct evidence of the neck biting De la Beche imagined. The structure — which made up half the animal’s body — was constructed from 13 bizarrely elongated and interlocking vertebrae, creating a neck as stiff as a fishing rod. “Getting any insight into how these extreme structures functioned with potential weakness and strengths is very important,” Dr. Spiekman said.

Henriette Borgund knows attackers can find weaknesses in the defences of a big renewables power company - she's found them herself. She joined Norway's Hydro (NHY.OL) as an "ethical hacker" last April, bringing years of experience in military cyberdefence to bear at a time of war in Europe and chaos in energy markets. They're nervously monitoring a hybrid war where physical energy infrastructure has already been targeted, from the Nord Stream gas pipelines to the Kakhovka dam. It said Russia had tried to destroy digital networks and cause power cuts, and that missile attacks on facilities were often accompanied by cyberattacks. "Germans are cautious by nature," said Stephan Fetsch, Germany's head of consumer goods at KPMG. Economists polled by Reuters are split on its second quarter fortunes: views ranged from a 0.3% GDP fall to a 0.5% gain, with a median forecast of 0.2% growth. However, German consumer sentiment remains below its pandemic low in the spring of 2020 and the consumer barometer from the German Retail Association (HDE) shows a similar picture. German consumers were hit particularly hard by high energy prices, being more dependent on Russia gas. "The German consumer has reasons to be scared and the result of all the economic uncertainty is usually an increase in precautionary savings," said Michael Burda, economics professor at Humboldt University Berlin.

Goldman Sachs' M&A team operates under a similar mandate, albeit with a few more zeros. Why bother stressing over 10 $1 billion deals when you can just do a $10 billion deal? It's not just the M&A market that's facing issues. The bank has held the top spot on the year-end M&A league tables for decades, but it is hearing footsteps. More on Goldman's M&A strategy amid an industry drought.
Goldman was forced to share its M&A crown with JPMorgan last quarter. It's been a tough road in 2023 for the Wall Street banks that specialize in advising on mergers and acquisitions. In a note sent to Goldman's alumni network last Tuesday, Feldgoise acknowledged that things have been tough. The importance of Goldman's M&A franchise was underscored by the bank's first-quarter earnings released Tuesday. "The Goldman M&A franchise has been #1 for 20+ years," Feldgoise said in his letter.
That means there's a record gap between the rates they offer customers on deposits and the Fed's benchmark. The interest rates that banks pay on customer deposits are lagging the US central bank's benchmark by a record amount, its economists said in a new paper. Assets in money-market funds hit a fresh high of $5.25 trillion last week, according to data from the Investment Company Institute. "The spread between the Fed funds rate and the deposit rate is at a modern high of above 2%," Kang-Landsberg, Luck, and Plosser said. Deposit interest rates could be set to surge the rest of this year as the gap to the Fed's benchmark starts to close, according to the researchers.

FRANKFURT/BRUSSELS, March 25 (Reuters) - The European Union and Germany have reached a deal on the future use of combustion engines, officials said on Saturday, an issue that has been closely followed by the auto industry. The agreement will allow some combustion engines beyond 2035 and was quickly condemned by a prominent environmental group. "We have found an agreement with Germany on the future use of e-fuels in cars," Frans Timmermans, head of EU climate policy, said on Twitter. "Vehicles with internal combustion engines can still be newly registered after 2035 if they fill up exclusively with CO2-neutral fuels," he said in a post on Twitter. Sweden, which holds the EU's rotating presidency, said EU diplomats would vote on Monday to formally approve the 2035 phaseout law.

Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that Bayada Home Health Care Inc did not violate federal wage law by docking salaried employees' paid time off, or PTO, when they did not work required weekly hours. The case marked the first time that a U.S. appeals court was asked whether paid time off counts as part of an employee's salary. The question is important because salaried workers can become eligible for overtime pay if employers make deductions from their wages. A group of Bayada employees, including nurses, physical therapists and social workers, sued the company in Scranton, Pennsylvania federal court in 2016. Circuit Court of Appeals, No.
