A Wisconsin judge on Monday struck down portions of a 2011 law that stripped most government workers in the state of collective bargaining rights and set off fierce demonstrations. The ruling by Judge Jacob Frost of the Dane County Circuit Court is certain to be appealed. “Restoring union freedoms to Wisconsin workers will strengthen Wisconsin’s middle class, lift up the voices of workers and lead to better public services for our communities,” said Stephanie Bloomingdale, the president of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, in a statement. Republicans passed the law, known as Act 10, shortly after winning control of state government in the 2010 elections, arguing that limits on public sector unions were necessary to balance the budget and attract business investments. They advanced the legislation despite large-scale protests at the State Capitol in Madison and an attempt by Democratic lawmakers to scuttle the vote by fleeing to Illinois.

CNN —President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter deepened an entanglement of politics and the rule of law that has tarnished faith in American justice and is almost certain to worsen in Donald Trump’s second term. And the cases against Hunter Biden lack the constitutional gravity or historic importance of the indictments against Trump and his frequent attacks on the rule of law. Already, Republicans are arguing the Hunter Biden pardon shows that the current president, and not the next one, is most to blame for politicizing the system of justice by meting out favorable treatment to his son. Yet at the same time, Hunter Biden put himself in a position in which he created a political vulnerability and potential conflict of interest for his father. Then, the investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign’s ties to Russia soured many of the 45th president’s supporters on the justice system.

Their top objective is to extend the 2017 Trump tax law and prevent $3.3 trillion in tax breaks from expiring at the end of 2025. The reconciliation process bypasses the Senate's 60-vote threshold for most bills, requiring just a majority vote to pass a tax- and spending package once per fiscal year. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said the GOP is “100%” committed to extending the Trump tax cuts but with “some deviations” from existing law. Economists broadly dislike tariffs, saying they tend to increase prices for consumers — a likelihood that many company executives are already warning of. The new slate of tariffs Trump calls for would be much steeper and more far-reaching if fully implemented. “In his first term, President Trump instituted tariffs against China that created jobs, spurred investment and resulted in no inflation,” Trump transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Often overlooked as a behind-the-scenes job, IT support offers competitive salaries, diverse opportunities and flexibility that many fail to recognize, Lisa Gevelber, a vice president at Google and founder of Grow With Google, tells CNBC Make It. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the number of IT support jobs will grow at least 15% in the next decade — more than three times faster than the average for all occupations. There are more than 300,000 unfilled IT support jobs in the U.S. right now, Gevelber points out. On Google, searches for "IT support jobs" and "IT support skills" hit an "all-time high" in 2024, since the search engine started tracking such queries 20 years ago, she adds. It would be another 12 years before the NCAA made a major revision to its rules on transgender athletes. The Independent Council on Women’s Sports is financing a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA over its policy on transgender women athletes. Those pushing for acceptance of trans athletes in competitive sports argue there is no evidence showing transgender women have an advantage. But the rules of World Aquatics bar transgender athletes from competition unless they have not experienced biological puberty. And like cisgender athletes, trans athlete’s abilities vary.

The Summary Ancient footprints discovered in Kenya belong to two different species of human relatives who walked on the same ground at the same time, a study found. The prints are thought to belong to the species Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei. A newly discovered set of footprints in Kenya provides the first evidence that two different species of ancient human relatives walked the same ground simultaneously 1.5 million years ago. While both are human relatives, Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei featured very different traits, and their fates within the human evolutionary tree took starkly different routes. Broadly speaking, Harcourt-Smith added, it has become increasingly clear that various ancient human species interacted across different habitats over the past 7 million years of evolution.
