Colorectal cancer cases have been rising in people younger than 50 over the last two decades. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force isn’t the first group to suggest lowering the screening age. The new study found that colorectal cancer screening among 45 to 49-year-olds remains low overall, but increased threefold following the 2021 guideline change. “One of the biggest predictors of whether you get age-appropriate cancer screening is whether or not you have insurance,” Lieu said. Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening, since it can detect not only cancerous tumors, but precancerous polyps that can be removed before they can turn into cancer.

People have died after drinking tea brewed from unwashed poppy seeds. Members of the House of Representatives and Senate have proposed legislation “to prohibit the distribution and sale of contaminated poppy seeds in order to prevent harm, addiction, and further deaths from morphine-contaminated poppy seeds.” The bill was one of several on the agenda for a September 10 House hearing. On the other hand, tea made from large quantities of unwashed poppy seeds could lead to addiction and overdose, doctors said. The US Drug Enforcement Administration said unwashed poppy seeds can kill when used alone or in combination with other drugs. The US Department of Justice has brought criminal prosecutions over the sale of unwashed poppy seeds.

In younger women, rates have increased at a faster clip — by about 1.4% every year since 2021. Among Asian American and Pacific Islander women under 50, breast cancer diagnoses have increased by 50% since 2000. Today, Black women are 5% less likely to get breast cancer than white women, but are nearly 40% more likely to die from the disease. The American Cancer Society researchers noted that this disparity is seen in even the most treatable types of breast cancer. Each person’s family and personal history and genetics will also determine when they should start screening for breast cancer.

New York CNN —CNN, one of the most popular news websites in the world, is starting to ask some of its visitors to pay $3.99 a month for access. The average visitor to CNN’s website, who may only read a few articles a month, will not be prompted to pay at this time. “Only after users consume a certain number of free articles will they be prompted to subscribe,” MacCallum explained. Under previous management, CNN developed a streaming video product called CNN+ in 2022 to create direct-to-consumer relationships with fans of the network. Some content, though, will remain fully accessible without a subscription, including the CNN homepage; breaking news live stories; standalone video pages; and sponsored articles.

The deal was finalized in a remote US court in the Pacific before he flew on to his native Australia. Before his deal with the US Justice Department, the Australian had been facing 18 criminal charges related to his organization’s dissemination of classified material and diplomatic cables, and a 175-year jail sentence. New York CNN —Next month’s presidential election could make America’s hostile media climate even worse for journalists. That’s the takeaway from a new Committee to Protect Journalists report about the state of press freedom in the US. The Committee to Protect Journalists has historically called attention to journalists being arrested and killed in repressive regimes. According to the US Press Freedom Tracker, assaults on journalists in the US have soared by more than 50% in 2024 compared to last year. The Committee to Protect Journalists said the “corrosive political environment” has intensified safety concerns for journalists – forcing newsrooms to conduct safety assessments, evaluate online threats, and hire extra security.

The Treasury market, though, hasn’t been paying attention. Officials penciled in another 50 basis points in reductions by the end of the year and another 100 by the end of 2025. That sentiment is evident in the “breakeven” inflation rate, or the difference between standard Treasury and Treasury Inflation Protected Securities yields. The 5-year breakeven rate, for instance, has risen 8 basis points since the Fed meeting and is up 20 basis points since Sept. 11. VATICAN CITY Associated Press —Pope Francis took the unusual decision Wednesday to expel 10 people – a bishop, priests and laypeople – from a troubled Catholic movement in Peru after a Vatican investigation uncovered “sadistic” abuses of power, authority and spirituality. It was announced by the Peruvian Bishops Conference, which posted a statement from the Vatican embassy on its website. The statement was astonishing because it listed abuses uncovered by the Vatican investigation that have rarely if ever been punished canonically — such as hacking someone’s communications — and cited the people the pope held responsible. Victims of Figari’s abuses complained to the Lima archdiocese in 2011, though other claims against him reportedly date to 2000. The investigation, published in 2017, found that Figari sodomized his recruits and forced them to fondle him and one another.

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman said Tuesday she thought her colleagues should have taken a more measured approach to last week’s half percentage point interest rate cut as she worries that inflation could reignite. In explaining her rationale, Bowman said the half percentage point, or 50 basis point, reduction posed a number of risks to the Fed’s twin goals of achieving low inflation and full employment. Though Bowman favored a reduction, she preferred the Fed lower by a quarter percentage point, more in line with the traditional moves at the central bank. In recent statements, Fed officials have cited easing inflation and a softening labor market as justification for the cut. At last week’s meeting, individual policymakers indicated they expect another half percentage point in cuts this year and another full point in 2025.
