NCAA and ESPN ink 8-year, $920 million media rights deal

The NCAA and ESPN have reached a new eight-year media rights deal worth more than $115 million annually, as the value of sports media rights reaches new heights. The new agreement carries an annual value of roughly three times the current 14-year deal, which pays about $40 million annually. It will include the rights to 40 NCAA championships — 21 women's and 19 men's events — as well as exclusive championship coverage of all rounds for women's basketball, women's volleyball, women's gymnastics, softball, baseball and FCS football. ESPN has benefited through its airing of the NCAA women's basketball tournament and the WNBA playoffs, among other sports. "Concurrent with the terms of the new media rights, several enhancements to student-athlete benefits across all three NCAA divisions will take effect, and this deal will help fund those important programs.

PGA Tour and LIV Golf are working to extend their proposed merger deadline, which was originally set at Dec. 31, Commissioner Jay Monahan told players in a memo on Sunday. The delay is the latest update in a long and tumultuous saga between the PGA Tour and Saudi Public Investment Fund-backed LIV Golf that has divided players and could dramatically change professional golf if the merger is completed. PGA Tour and LIV are expected to make a formal decision on the combination ahead of the Masters tournament in April, according to The Telegraph, which first reported the extension. Under the structure of the agreement, PGA Tour would hold a permanent controlling interest in the new entity's board of directors. The agreement also includes the DP World Tour, also known as the PGA European Tour.

Reactions have been mixed among professional pickleball players. Two-time Major League Pickleball champion Thomas Wilson, however, said players are paid "more than fairly even with the cuts."

The PGA Tour said Tuesday it will begin to offer professional players direct equity ownership in the new company that will be formed after it reaches a deal with investors, according to an internal memo obtained by CNBC. The talks with PIF and the DP World Tour remain the tour's "top priority," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in Tuesday's memo. The new program outlined in Tuesday's memo is the latest move to align the interests of PGA Tour players with the business itself. Monahan also wrote that the Tour's agreement with PIF and DP World Tour has generated interest from other investors. Last week, Fenway Sports Group Chairman Tom Werner acknowledged that the company has held talks with the PGA Tour, but declined to comment with any further details.

The National Women's Soccer League announced a four-year contract Thursday for media distribution with CBS Sports, ESPN, Amazon Prime Video and Scripps Sports . The NWSL will begin each regular-season weekend with Friday night matches on Prime Video, followed by double-header Saturday night games on Scripps'-owned ION network. The league will also air a package of regular-season matches on CBS and stream live on Paramount+. Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines the elements of tennis, ping pong and badminton. USA Pickleball says 130 new locations were added per month in 2022 and estimates another 25,000 courts will need to be built to keep up the demand. Last year, 36 million people played pickleball, and the sport has grown 158% over the last three years according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. USA Pickleball is looking to quiet the commotion – and cultivate good will – by announcing a new "quiet category" for pickleball equipment.

Last year, an estimated 46 million people bet on the NFL in the U.S., according to the AGA. Out of all U.S. adults, 35.1 million people or 14% plan to bet online, while 13.6 million or 5% plan to bet at a physical sportsbook. Self-identified NFL fans are expected to place more bets than ever this season, with 37% projected to place a wager. "We expect this to be the most bet NFL season in BetMGM's history," Seamus Magee, trading team lead at BetMGM, told CNBC in an email.
