Disney’s theme parks reveal shrunken treasure

Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Bob Iger can’t get off the roller coaster. Walt Disney’s (DIS.N) chief executive plans to double the Magic Kingdom’s investment in theme parks and other experiences to $60 billion over the course of about 10 years. On the other, Disney’s dwindling cash and the increasing demands for it is cause for concern. One issue is that Disney’s free cash flow has plummeted. No wonder adding theme parks to the list is making shareholders skittish.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ray Epps, a former Marine who became the target of a Jan. 6, 2021, conspiracy theory, has been charged with a misdemeanor offense in connection with the U.S. Capitol riot and is expected to plead guilty, according to court papers filed Tuesday. Epps' attorney, Edward J. Ungvarsky, said in an email that the case was filed with an anticipation that Epps would plead guilty to the charge. Although Epps' lawsuit mentions Fox’s Laura Ingraham and Will Cain, former Fox host Tucker Carlson is cited as the leader in promoting the theory. “The only time I’ve been involved with the government was when I was a Marine in the United States Marine Corps,” Epps said. Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and other members were convicted of seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 attack.

In the forthcoming book, a copy of which CNN obtained in advance of its release, Wolff makes a number of shocking and explosive claims. Suzanne Scott feared she would lose her job as chief executive of Fox News amid the Dominion lawsuit, he reports. And Fox sources tell me that Wolff made no attempt to fact check his book with either Fox News or its parent company, Fox Corporation. With Fox News, where an author might be basing major claims using less-than-reliable sources, the risks are more pronounced, making such reporting efforts even more paramount. Fox News, for its part, is choosing not to respond to the specific claims Wolff makes in the book.

18 Colorado rallied to beat Colorado State 43-35 early Sunday in front of a full house packed with celebrities. Sanders connected with Harrison for an 18-yard score and then found an open Xavier Weaver on the 2-point conversion. After the game, Sanders and Norvell shook hands near midfield amid a sea of fans. “This rivalry has been going on way longer before I got here,” said Norvell, who's in his second season at Colorado State. Colorado State put a bye week to good use by finding ways to contain Sanders and the explosive Colorado offense for most of the game.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's pension funds and the state of Oregon sued Fox Corporation on Tuesday, alleging the company harmed investors by allowing Fox News to broadcast falsehoods about the 2020 election that exposed the network to defamation lawsuits. New York City's pension funds are long-term shareholders of Fox Corporation, with shares valued at $28.1 million as of the end of July. In a statement, Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum said the Fox breached its fiduciary duties by disregarding legal risks. “The directors’ choices exposed themselves and the company to liability and exposed their shareholders to significant risks," she said. “That is the crux of our lawsuit, and we look forward to making our case in court.”

Fox, which has maintained it is proud of its dishonest 2020 election coverage, still faces an even larger, $2.7 billion lawsuit from election technology company Smartmatic. That is the crux of our lawsuit, and we look forward to making our case in court.”A spokesperson for Fox Corporation declined to comment on the lawsuit. A spokesperson for the New York City Comptroller’s office said the pension funds held 857,000 shares of Fox Corporation stock valued at $28.10 million. Fox Corporation, led by Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch, has kept the current Fox News leadership team that oversaw the network’s lie-filled 2020 coverage in place. CNN —America loves to punish a “bad mother” — and there is a long history of using prominent celebrities as cautionary figures of abominable motherhood. So when news broke that 34-year-old musician Joe Jonas filed for divorce from 27-year-old actor Sophie Turner, it wasn’t surprising that the media narrative was that Turner wanted to go out at night while Jonas wanted to parent. Gossip sites like TMZ and Page Six framed their “different lifestyles” — Turner as a party girl and Jonas as a “homebody” trying to look out for his daughters. In the past, efforts to paint women as bad mothers during a divorce would have worked. But that’s not what is happening with the Jonas and Turner situation so far.

The NFL season kicks off Thursday night with the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions on NBC and its Peacock app. Long gone are the days when NFL games were shown on one or two networks. They are showing more NFL games on streaming platforms, including games exclusively, to try to entice people to sign up. “The NFL is the biggest driver of network ratings and advertising dollars during the fall TV season,” the analysts said. According to the Wall Street Journal’s polling, Trump held a 24-point lead over DeSantis back in April, 48% to 24%. Or take CNN’s polling, which had Trump ahead of DeSantis by 21 points nationally back in June, 47% to 26%. Or look at Fox News’ poll, which had DeSantis at 28% back in February, versus 43% for Trump. But Fox’s latest national poll — back in mid-August — had DeSantis at 16% (versus 53% for Trump). Altogether, the pattern is clear: DeSantis’ national polling percentages have gone from the mid- to high-20s earlier this year to the teens now.

The pushback came in a defamation suit that Epps filed against the right-wing network. He claims Fox figures, including ex-host Tucker Carlson, destroyed his reputation by repeatedly raising the baseless idea that he led a false-flag plot to hurt Donald Trump. “Tucker Carlson (and/or his guests) described the known (and undisputed) facts” about Epps, Fox said in the filing. But this ignores the fact that a previous defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems demonstrated that several Fox hosts operated in bad faith, raising claims on-air that they didn’t actually believe. Fox News paid $787 million to settle with Dominion earlier this year and is still facing a $2.7 billion lawsuit from Smartmatic, another voting technology company.

Here are six takeaways from the first 2024 Republican presidential primary debate:Taking shots at RamaswamyWith Trump absent from Wednesday’s debate, the the early target of most of the debate participants was not DeSantis or South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott or any candidate who has ever held elected office before. DeSantis clarified: “Well, statewide.” Asked if he would support a federal six-week abortion ban, DeSantis talked about his electoral victory in Florida. And no one clearly stated they would sign a six-week federal abortion ban – even if they’d approved such laws as governors. At one end of the spectrum stood Haley, who sparred with Pence over the possibility of passing a federal ban. Ahead of the debate, Republican strategists argued that this was the approach Scott wanted to take because it’s his authentic self.

The former president has told aides that he has made up his mind not to participate in the debate and has decided to post an online interview with Tucker Carlson that night instead, according to people briefed on the matter. Upstaging Fox’s biggest event of the year would be provocation enough. The decision is a potential source of aggravation for the Republican National Committee chairwoman, Ronna McDaniel, who privately urged him to attend, including in her own visit to Bedminster last month. But Mr. Trump’s primary motive in skipping the debate is not personal animosity toward Ms. McDaniel but a crass political calculation: He doesn’t want to risk his giant lead in a Republican race that some close to him believe he must win to stay out of prison. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for the campaign.

CNN —One of Fox News’ top hosts said that many of the world’s problems would be solved if women were to vanish from the planet. As surveillance video played showing a smash-and-grab that occurred over the weekend at a Los Angeles Nordstrom, Gutfeld went on a rant portraying women as soft on crime and effectively blaming the entire gender for supposed policies that would prevent such crimes from being committed. “What would happen if all the women took a ladies week off and they went to Venus … How many of these problems would still exist?” Gutfeld wondered aloud. “I know this is offensive to the judge because she thinks like a dude,” Gutfeld joked. Gutfeld is no stranger to controversy, having made a number of comments during his time at Fox News that have ignited significant backlash.

CNN —Fox Corporation on Friday said its top lawyer, Viet Dinh, will exit the company in a significant shakeup to its corporate ranks in the aftermath of the company’s historic $787 million settlement with election technology company Dominion Voting Systems. Dinh is the latest senior executive to depart after the historic Dominion settlement. Days after Fox settled the lawsuit with Dominion early this year, the company fired its star prime time host, the right-wing extremist Tucker Carlson. Dominion is just one of several high-profile lawsuits Fox has settled this year over its airing of false election conspiracy theories in 2020. While he faces classic signs of a campaign in free fall, including staffer layoffs and donor concern, DeSantis’ problems are not all self-inflicted. Keith Davis, who has served as Sheriff of Wayne County since 1997, is a Trump voter who is now backing DeSantis. Scott Olson/Getty ImagesIn his first post-reset swing through Iowa, DeSantis had mixed results. While he was in Iowa, DeSantis also repeatedly paid tribute to Reynolds after Trump alienated some caucus-goers by badmouthing the state’s popular Republican governor. The influential Fox News lineup, which debuts Monday night, is made up of Trump mouthpieces — personalities who have willfully spread propaganda and misinformation on behalf of Trump during his years in the White House. With the surprise firing of Tucker Carlson from the 8pm perch this spring, Murdoch had the opportunity to reshape Fox News prime time. Winding back the Republican Party to a previous era may be impossible, even for Murdoch. Even if Youngkin did enter the race, Murdoch surely knows that his odds of dethroning Trump would be slim. Which may explain his decision to go with a prime time lineup that has reliably championed Trump.

CNN —Facing a long summer of running from behind former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is for now resisting calls to dramatically change course in his presidential campaign, instead targeting the first debate in late August as his opportunity to alter the trajectory of the race. DeSantis’ campaign has already surpassed the donor threshold requirement of 40,000 unique donors and appears on track to meet the polling threshold as well. DeSantis’ political team expects his activity in the coming weeks may look subdued compared to other candidates who may need an attention-grabbing moment to attract donors and support to meet the debate requirements. “People want to support Ron but don’t like this kind of stupid stuff,” the fundraiser told CNN.

CNN —Three former high-ranking Fox executives are blasting Rupert Murdoch for Fox News’ role spreading disinformation in the public discourse. In a joint statement published Wednesday, the executives — Preston Padden, Ken Solomon, and Bill Reyner — expressed profound regret for their roles helping Murdoch build Fox in its early days. It’s only the latest lawsuit Fox News has faced for advancing false election conspiracy theories after Donald Trump was defeated at the ballot box in 2020. In that same month, Fox News also settled an election-related lawsuit with a Venezuelan businessman who had sued the network. He can be seen moving past a line of Capitol Police at the barricades, but never actually goes inside the Capitol. Federal prosecutors have not charged Mr. Epps with a crime, focusing instead on the more than 1,000 other demonstrators who acted violently or were trespassing in the Capitol. The Justice Department’s sprawling investigation into the attack remains open, however, and Mr. Epps could still be indicted. Yet for more than 18 months, Mr. Carlson insisted that the lack of charges against Mr. Epps could mean only one thing: that he was being protected because he was a secret government agent. There was “no rational explanation,” Mr. Carlson told his audience, why this “mysterious figure” who “helped stage-manage the insurrection” had not been charged.
