An escalation of trade and tariffs tensions between the U.S. and China would have "costly" economic consequences around the world, Gita Gopinath, deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund told CNBC on Wednesday. Lonodn CNN —Some toymakers are “flooding” Europe with dangerous toys via online marketplaces, including magnets capable of puncturing a child’s intestines if swallowed and products containing toxic chemicals, according to an industry body. An Amazon spokesperson said the company has “proactive measures in place to prevent unsafe or non-compliant products from being listed” on its site. The EU has the “strictest toy safety regime in the world” but toymakers from outside the bloc are exempt from EU rules when selling their products via online marketplaces, TIE said. In the United States, too, regulators are concerned about the safety of goods sold online. In September, two officials from the Consumer Products Safety Commission called for an investigation into Shein and Temu over the potential sale of “deadly baby and toddler products.”

Egypt and Bangladesh are among 22 countries deemed “safe” by Italy, a designation that prevents their nationals from qualifying for political asylum, with few exceptions. Under the protocol signed between Italy and Albania last year, those sent to Albania must not show signs of torture, illness or vulnerability or be part of nuclear families traveling together. Those brought directly to Italy instead would fall under EU regulations, which involve a lengthy asylum process. If they are denied asylum in Italy, they will then be deported back to their countries of origin at Italy’s expense. More than 1 million migrants have made it to Italy by sea from North African ports since 2014, according to Italian government statistics and UNHCR.
