Welcome to the online version of From the Politics Desk, an evening newsletter that brings you the NBC News Politics team’s latest reporting and analysis from the campaign trail, the White House and Capitol Hill. The final undecided voters could sway the election. But in a narrowly divided presidential election, voters who have put off making a decision until the last minute could find themselves with the power to decide the future of the country. Late-deciding voters broke for Trump in 2020 and 2016, with some analysts and strategists in both campaigns crediting them for electing Trump eight years ago. And it was true in 2020, when the pandemic and debates played an oversize role in the election featuring Trump and Joe Biden.

The Infinite Monkey Theorem hypothesizes that, given a typewriter and an infinite amount of time, a monkey could in theory produce the full works of William Shakespeare. According to Open Source Shakespeare, a web page containing all of the bard’s plays, poems and sonnets, there are 884,421 words in the entire works of Shakespeare. While the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust says the writer introduced more than 1,700 words into the English language, "banana" was not one of them. Other academics were less incredulous, suggesting that the paper was a wild goose chase — a phrase itself invented by Shakespeare. It may be time for the theorem to exit popular usage — pursued, unsuccessfully, by a monkey.

Matt Escalante is the new VP of Brach's seasonal division, best known for its candy corn. The company knows its top treat is controversial — but it dominates a nearly $90 million market. AdvertisementIf you've eaten candy corn sometime in the last century, there's a good chance it came from Brach's. The confection giant is best known for cornering the candy corn market, churning out 28 million pounds of the candle-like candy each year and raking in $75 million of an $88.5 million candy corn market in 2022, according to data from the consumer research firm Circana. And while the candy corn market stays booming, the product itself — with its waxy texture, neon coloring, and saccharine aftertaste — is notoriously polarizing.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding with Brookfield Asset Management, under which the wealth fund will serve as a strategic anchor investor for the asset manager's newly announced private equity vehicle for the region, Brookfield Middle East Partners. Signed at the eighth edition of Future Investment Initiative, Saudi Arabia's flagship annual economic conference in Riyadh, the non-binding agreement marks the kingdom's latest push for financial partnerships that boost private equity investment and economic development within its borders. The move is in line with Saudi Arabia's recently-updated Investment Law, which seeks to attract more foreign direct investment — it's set itself a lofty target of $100 billion in annual FDI by 2030. Currently, that figure has averaged around $12 billion per year since Vision 2030 was announced in 2017, according to data from the kingdom's investment ministry — still a long way from that goal. The PIF, the kingdom's $925 billion sovereign wealth fund, has deployed billions in capital around the world as it aims to diversify Saudi Arabia's revenue streams away from oil, materializing the central goal of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 campaign.

In today’s edition, national political correspondent Steve Kornacki breaks down the key areas where Donald Trump's standing with Puerto Rican voters will be tested. Where Trump’s support among Puerto Rican voters will be put to the testSteve KornackiDonald Trump’s campaign appearance in Allentown, Pa., this evening comes amid questions over whether the fallout from his Madison Square Garden rally will cost him support among Puerto Rican voters. Allentown is a majority-Hispanic city of 125,000, and about one-quarter of its overall population is of Puerto Rican descent — one of the highest concentrations of Puerto Ricans anywhere in the U.S. Pennsylvania’s polls will close at 8 p.m. EST on Election Night, but we may get a big clue about Trump’s Puerto Rican support before that. Majority-Hispanic Osceola County in Florida, just south of Orlando, is a large county (population about 450,000 — and growing) that’s about one-third Puerto Rican.

McDonald's on Tuesday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that beat analysts' expectations as its U.S. restaurants reversed last quarter's same-store sales decline. It's the second straight quarter that the company's same-store sales have fallen. U.S. same-store sales rose 0.3%, reversing last quarter's same-store sales declines but still slightly weaker than the 0.5% increase predicted by StreetAccount estimates. The company's two international divisions both reported steeper declines in same-store sales compared with the prior quarter. The international developmental licensed markets division reported same-store sales declines of 3.5%, driven by weak demand in the Middle East and China.

By Mark MurrayThe razor-close presidential election could very well come down to this question: Will the infrequent voters who back Donald Trump by double digits actually turn out? And she carries the tiny share of voters who participated in 2022 but not 2020 by 9 points (52% to 43%). And he’s carrying the voters who didn’t partake in either 2020 or 2022 by 10 points (50% to 40%). On the other hand, NBC News recently observed a pair of focus groups of voters who didn’t participate in the 2020 election but are planning to this time around. Astronomers have never detected dark matter, but they believe it makes up about 85% of the total matter in the universe. Meanwhile, the existence of dark energy helps researchers explain why the universe is expanding — and why that expansion is speeding up. A prime example is the European Space Agency’s wide-angle Euclid telescope that launched in 2023 to investigate the riddles of dark energy and dark matter. Euclid this week delivered the first piece of a cosmic map — containing about 100 million stars and galaxies — that will take six years to create. These stunning 3D observations may help scientists see how dark matter warps light and curves space across galaxies.

Plus, "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker previews Kamala Harris' trip to Texas. Among these voters, Harris gets a boost because they believe she would protect abortion rights, and some have broader hopes that electing the first female president could send a strong message to the country. Our latest NBC News poll shows why abortion is such a critical issue for Harris: It’s the top motivating issue for voters, especially younger women.
