(Photo by Edward Berthelot/Getty Images)Many of the world's major fashion brands are failing to address forced labor in their supply chains, according to a report, with French luxury giant LVMH among the worst performers. The research from KnowTheChain, an organization focused on forced labor in supply chains, analyzed 65 companies for exposure to forced labor risk. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, KnowTheChain said companies scored on average 21/100. "They remain largely reactive to human rights violations, rather than evidencing robust, embedded human rights and environmental due diligence practices designed to prevent them," it added. "As such, it demonstrates that a corporate strategy which embeds human rights due diligence does not have to come at the cost of long-term sustainable growth or investor returns."

The fuel cell systems are produced through a 50-50 joint venture between the automakers at an $85 million facility in suburban Detroit. The companies, which are marketing and selling products separately, are calling the "large-scale" production at the joint venture the first of its kind in the U.S. And now we can start to move it into these segments where before it wasn't really feasible," Charlie Freese, executive director of GM's "Hydrotec" fuel cell products, told CNBC during an event at the plant.

Boards are most likely to have mandatory retirement age policiesHaving a mandatory retirement policy for board members is up to the discretion of individual companies. “In 2023, 69% of [S&P 500] boards reported having a mandatory retirement policy — down one point from 2022,” according to an August 2023 report from executive search firm Spencer Stuart. Many other public safety occupations do have mandatory retirement ages. The whys behind mandatory retirement agesThere may be varied stated reasons for having a mandatory retirement age, such as opening up the pipeline for younger talent to have more opportunities. For that reason, advocates for older workers, like the AARP, contend all mandatory retirement ages should be eliminated, even for demanding jobs involving public safety.

BINigel Vaz, CEO of Publicis Sapient, a consulting firm, compares the buzz around AI to the early days of the internet. BINela Richardson, chief economist at ADP, told BI there's a big learning gap on what constitutes AI. Much of what is being called "generative AI" has been around for decades, while much of what workers think is AI is actually automation. Similarly, Guru Gowrappan, CEO of ViaSat, a communications operator, says many companies are just talking about AI at Davos — but not actually doing much with it. And some of them are just recategorizing what they were doing to call it AI," he tells BI.

I first spoke to Kwasi Mitchell, Deloitte's first chief purpose officer, in March about change in corporate America. For one, his role evolved from broadly touching on sustainability, equity, and social impact to overseeing all DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — responsibilities at the consulting firm. Mitchell's insights are part of Business Insider's year-end leadership package, "Looking Ahead 2024," which digs into vision, strategy, and challenges across corporate America. I distinctly remember sitting across the table, starting to work with our collaborators on what actually could this be. Having a coalescing force with a few organizations to drive momentum could be really really interesting and impactful in the future.

In 2023, Business Insider's annual list of People Transforming Business highlights key players across the advertising, ESG, finance, AI, and labor sectors. Increasingly, they're turning to more opaque private credit markets to borrow money. The world of private credit sits outside the traditional banking system. Analysts expect the private credit market to balloon in size — likely keeping lawyers like Breen very busy. Muthukrishnan is trying to make sense of how risky these private credit loans are by overseeing what is so far the most comprehensive look at vulnerabilities in the industry.

Summary Ten leading development banks sign joint statementTo deepen collaboration across multiple themesNo mention of phasing out fossil fuel financingDUBAI, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Ten of the world's top development banks pledged to step up their climate efforts at the COP28 summit, yet failed to say anything about halting financing for fossil fuel projects, a document seen by Reuters showed. In a statement to be announced at the event in Dubai, the group, including the World Bank and regional peers, said the window of opportunity to secure a liveable planet was "rapidly closing". A new, joint Long-term Strategies Program, hosted by the World Bank, would coordinate support to help countries and sub-national entities develop plans around issues including decarbonisation and climate resilience. The group also pledged to help countries set up platforms to encourage a "collectively reinforcing combination" of support including around policy reform, finance and technical assistance. The banks planned to scale up finance to help countries adapt to the impacts of climate change, including through boosting support for disaster risk management, disaster preparedness and capacity building.

None reported a positive outlook for China's economy, citing the regulatory environment and geopolitics among primary factors dissuading them from investing. "(Investors) are now focused on how to deal with a macroeconomic environment that is stuck in a higher-for-longer interest rate cycle," the report said.
