Fernandes seals comeback win for Man Utd over Forest
  + stars: | 2023-08-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Christian Eriksen began the comeback after 17 minutes when he touched in Marcus Rashford's cross but for all United's pressure, Forest still packed a substantial threat. But they responded in determined fashion to win a Premier League game at Old Trafford from two goals down for only the third time. In doing so Awoniyi became the first Forest player to score in seven successive Premier League appearances. Rashford dinked in a free kick and Fernandes headed the ball across to Casemiro who made up for missing an earlier sitter. Almost inevitably, Fernandes supplied the winner, although it was tough on Forest who had chances to grab a point in 13 nervous minutes of stoppage time.

MILAN, Aug 24 (Reuters) - It's hard to be bullish about real estate in an environment of sharply higher interest rates. Two years of steep falls have made European property a short-seller favourite as sector valuations and investor positioning plunged to levels last seen during the 2008 global financial crisis. A gauge of European real estate shares (.SX86P) has halved in value to about $131 billion since 2021, but the mood shifted in July as earnings expectations improved. "Things aren't great for real estate companies and that's why they are trading at a huge discount. Meanwhile, BlackRock's iShares European Property ETF (IPRP.L) has seen a 10% surge in inflows from late February, according to data on its website.

CNN —Salvatore “Toto” Cutugno, the Italian singer-songwriter best known for his 1983 hit “L’Italiano,” has died at age 80, local media reported Tuesday. Cutugno was also a regular at Italy’s Sanremo song contest, which he won in 1980 with “Solo Noi,” and was runner-up multiple times. But he was most famous for his 1983 smash hit, “L’Italiano,” a pop song that celebrated the nation’s identity and culture. Though it didn’t make an impression in the United States or United Kingdom, it shot him to stardom across Europe. In Zagreb in 1990, Cutugno won Italy its second Eurovision Song Contest victory, with his song “Insieme: 1992” (“Together: 1992”), which he composed and wrote himself.

Toto Cutugno, an Italian singer and songwriter whose 1983 hit song “L’Italiano” became a worldwide sensation and was still hugely popular decades later, died on Tuesday in Milan. His longtime manager, Danilo Mancuso, said the cause of Mr. Cutugno’s death, at San Raffaele Hospital, was cancer. In a career that began when he was in his late teens, Mr. Cutugno sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. “He was able to build melodies that remained stuck in the audience’s mind and heart,” Mr. Mancuso, who had worked with Mr. Cutugno for 20 years, said in a phone interview. “The refrains of his most popular songs are so melodic.”

The Adyen share plunge "was because expectations were much higher. Analysts believed that Adyen would take significantly more share in this difficult market environment," said Jefferies equity analyst Hannes Leitner. Was the share price reaction justified? One European equities trader, who asked not to be named, noted there were orders to sell Adyen shares at any price and referred to "apocalypse selling." According to data from Refinitiv, 17 analysts rated Adyen "buy", 12 "hold", and 4 "sell" before the earnings announcement.

The company logo of Chinese developer Country Garden is pictured at the Shanghai Country Garden Center in Shanghai, China August 9, 2023. REUTERS/Aly Song/File PhotoAug 14 (Reuters) - Turmoil at China's largest private developer Country Garden could set off a "vicious cycle" of financing stress on the country's real estate investment trusts (REITs), brokerage J.P. Morgan warned on Monday. These fresh worries come as Country Garden sought to delay payment on a private onshore bond for the first time and suspended trading in 11 onshore bonds. "The default events may lead to a chain reaction on developer financing, adding stress to POE (privately owned enterprise) developers and their creditors." Rising trust defaults would drag economic growth by 0.3-0.4 percentage points directly, J.P.Morgan warned.

"For many people, the pandemic is now over, and this is time now for travelling far from home," said Corinne Martin, fund manager at Ofi Invest in Paris. The point at which China announced the end of health restrictions in 2022 was probably the best moment to jump into travel stocks. They remain buyers, noting how at 11 times 2024 earnings, the stock displays an unjustified discount and prices no growth. The sector is set to raise headline payouts by over 3 billion pounds this year. That estimate is 1 billion pounds more than what it forecast three months ago. British annual consumer price inflation fell to a lower than expected 7.9% in June, below a forecast for a decline to 8.2%. June's rate was a long way off last October's 41-year high of 11.1%, but far above the BoE's 2% target rate. "Some good news on UK inflation at last, coming in below expectations for June and most importantly the core inflation rate fell more than thought," Neil Birrell, who is chief investment officer at Premier Miton Investors, said. British finance minister Jeremy Hunt said there was still a long way to go to reduce inflation towards target. Meanwhile, interest-rate derivatives showed traders no longer believe UK rates will have to rise above 6% to temper inflation.

LONDON, June 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Hong Kong-listed Ferretti went the extra mile to ensure its shares could finally trade in Europe. At 13 times its expected 2023 net profit , Ferretti traded at a discount to rival Sanlorenzo’s (SNL.MI) 15 times multiple. That’s a modest outcome for a company that has laboured since 2019 to try and list in its Italian home base. That compares to the 2.5% fee Italian gambling company Lottomatica (LTMC.MI) paid for its Milan market debut in May. Weichai will still hold on to nearly a third of Ferretti’s shares after its Milan listing.

McKinsey says generative AI could add $7.3 trillion in value to the world economy each year and believes half of today's work activities could be automated between 2030 and 2060. The latest Bank of America survey in June showed 29% of global investors don't expect AI to increase profits or jobs. "There's a lot of focus on the risks that generative AI can bring. LONDON, May 16 (Reuters) - Investors lifted equity allocations to a 5-month high but cash levels also increased to 5.6%, even as they remained worried about a possible credit crunch and inflation staying elevated, a Bank of America survey showed on Tuesday. Investors rotated portfolios into tech stocks, lifting allocations to the highest since December 2021, the euro area and equities, and cut exposure to commodities and utilities. "Long big tech", "short banks" and "short U.S. dollar" were the most crowded trades in May, while contrarian trades were "long REITs", "long banks", "long value stocks", "short bonds", "short tech" and "short growth", the survey found. A net 65% of respondents now expect a weaker economy, the most pessimistic in 2023, but most still expect the economy to experience a "soft landing". REUTERS/Pierre AlbouyMILAN/LONDON, April 21 (Reuters) - Short-sellers who bet against European banks are set to lose a substantial amount of money in April after the sector bounced back from the shock downfall of Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) in anticipation of strong quarterly earnings. The STOXX European banks share index (.SX7P) has risen as much as 18% from late March's lows. But a Bank of America survey showed fund managers cut bank exposure in April to the lowest since May 2020, as they piled into more recession-proof defensive sectors. Ortex estimates short interest on European banks is close to 1% of the free share float, an 11-month high. One area of concern is exposure to commercial real estate and investors will be alert to any sign of emerging stress as European lenders report earnings next week.

Average daily value traded at the London Stock Exchange (LSEG) (LSEG.L) rose 12.9% month-over-month in March. "Investors tend to look at the exchanges as defensive names. April 3 (Reuters) - U.S. energy stocks hit an over one-month high on Monday, following a rally in European peers as crude prices rose more than 6% following a surprise announcement by Saudi Arabia and other OPEC+ oil producers to cut production. The S&P 500 energy index (.SPNY) added 4.2%, eying its best day in six months, while the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) traded flat. So any amount of oil price incrementally higher from here is very good for margins and it's very good for these stocks." Other oil producers Occidental Petroleum (OXY.N), ConocoPhillips (COP.N), Devon Energy (DVN.N), Marathon Oil (MRO.N) and APA Corp (APA.O) gained between 6.3% and 9.5%. Alastair Syme, head of energy research at Citi, said investors had recently been reducing the weight of energy stocks in their portfolios, and that any move to re-weight would likely benefit most of the largest cap stocks.
