ROME (AP) — “Poor Things,” a film about Victorian-era female empowerment, won the Golden Lion on Saturday at a Venice Film Festival largely deprived of Hollywood glamour because of the writers and actors strikes. The film, starring Emma Stone, won the top prize at the 80th edition of the festival, which is often a predictor of Oscar glory. The film tells the story of two young boys’ odyssey from Dakar, Senegal, to the detention camps in Libya and finally across the Mediterranean to Europe. Peter Sarsgaard won best actor for “Memory,” in which he co-stars with Jessica Chastain in a film about high schoolers reuniting. Cailee Spaeny won best actress for “Priscilla,” Sofia Coppola's portrait of the private side of Priscilla and Elvis Presley.

The runner-up Silver Lion award went to "Evil Does Not Exist", an enigmatic, rural drama directed by Japan's Ryusuke Hamaguchi -- the only Asian entry among the 23 films competing for the main prize. “Poor Things,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, was awarded the Golden Lion for best film at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on Saturday by a competition jury led by Damien Chazelle. The film stars Emma Stone in a virtuoso performance as a woman with an initially childlike understanding of the world who comes into her own through a sexual and philosophical journey. Bella Baxter, the main character in the film, “wouldn’t exist without Emma Stone,” Lanthimos said. Like many other actors in films screened at the festival, Stone was not in attendance, as the strike by SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents television and movie actors, continued. Set in a partly fantastical 19th-century Europe, “Poor Things” follows Bella (Stone) on her eye-opening adventures in Tony McNamara’s adaptation of the 1992 Alasdair Gray novel.

CNN —Virgin Galactic notched its third commercial spaceflight, launching three paying customers on a roughly 90-minute flight that briefly touched the edge of space. Also on board were two Virgin Galactic pilots, commander Nicola Pecile and Michael Masucci. Virgin Galactic stock has shed more than 30% of its value over the past month despite the company’s recent successes. On its first commercial launch, Virgin Galactic carried members of the Italian air force and an Italian engineer on a science research mission. All told, Virgin Galactic has sold about 800 tickets, including 600 at earlier price points up to $250,000 and, more recently, another couple hundred at $450,000 per ticket.

The picture was made by Yorgos Lanthimos and stars Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life after committing suicide in Victorian London. So you can understand that there is a shorthand," Lanthimos said, adding this meant the actor understood why the myriad sex scenes were needed. Stone also produced "Poor Things", which meant she was involved in the decision-making from the word go. "Poor Things" is one of 23 movies competing for the prestigious Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, which runs until Sept. 9.

And you thought Barbie’s creation myth was head-spinning! “Poor Things,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, often plays like a wild, art-house remix of Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster doll opus. But this is no family film: As baby-brained Bella starts to come of age, her lack of inhibitions steers her toward sexual situations that had the Venice moviegoer next to me squirming in his seat. Quite literally a child in a woman’s body, Bella can barely string words together and is given to shocking outbursts. Even gaining control of her limbs is a challenge: Bella lurches through Baxter’s mansion like a zombie dressed in drag, which I suppose she kind of is.

The case against Tierra Allen, 29, claims she slandered a car rental company and screamed publicly. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have prohibited the 29-year-old Texas resident from leaving the country since April, when an employee of a rental car company accused her of screaming during an argument. After widespread international media attention to her case, Dubai police have now amended that complaint. The rental car was towed back to the rental car office with Allen's belongings still inside, including her wallet, phone, and passport. Allen's mother, Tina Baxter, told Insider that her daughter expects to finally retrieve her personal items from the rental car agency this week.

Bonobos co-founder Andy Dunn is returning to the retailer as brand advisor as the company looks to get back to its roots after it was sold by Walmart earlier this year, Bonobos and new parent company WHP Global announced Friday. WHP Global and Express Inc., which runs the Express brand, bought Bonobos from Walmart in a $75 million deal that was announced in April and closed last month. Walmart originally bought Bonobos in 2017 for $310 million while it was working to grow its online presence under former e-commerce president Marc Lore. Under WHP Global, Bonobos can expand internationally, he said. While Walmart sold Bonobos for a significant discount compared to what it paid, the acquisition wasn't necessarily a losing one for Walmart.

He said there are no statistics available showing more people are committing violent offences while on bail. The bill introduced this week comes after multiple high-profile violent crimes that police allege were committed by people on bail, including the killing of a police officer late last year. The bill needs to be passed in Parliament, where the governing Liberals have a minority and require support of another party. People jailed awaiting trial may feel pressured to plead guilty to get out of jail sooner, Brown said. "We just need to hold those accountable when they fail to do their jobs as bail supervisors or when people fail to abide by their bail terms."

May 10 (Reuters) - An investment consortium, comprising of Elliott Investment Management, Patient Square Capital and Veritas Capital, has agreed to buy Syneos Health Inc (SYNH.O), in a deal valued at $7.1 billion, including debt, the contract research firm said on Wednesday. Syneos said the consortium will pay about $43 per share in cash, which represents a premium of about 12% to the company's last close of $38.45. The deal comes at a time when Syneos faces challenges in winning new business, as many of its clients, which includes medium-sized biotechs, have cut spending as they have found it difficult to raise funding in a post-COVID-19 market downturn. Deal comes days after a private-equity groups including Warburg Pincus and Advent International agreed to buy Baxter International (BAX.N) biopharma solutions unit for $4.25 billion. Baxter expects net after-tax proceeds of about $3.4 billion from the sale. Photo: Kristoffer Tripplaar/Sipa USA/Associated PressBaxter International on Monday said it agreed to sell its biopharma-solutions unit for $4.25 billion, as the medical-products maker continues to streamline its focus. The Deerfield, Ill.-based company is selling the unit to private-equity firms Advent International and Warburg Pincus .
The buyout consortium has turned to other private equity firms to help fund the deal as direct lenders, one of the sources added. There is no certainty that Warburg Pincus and Advent will successfully complete negotiations to acquire the unit and Baxter may still opt to sell to another bidder or keep the business, according to the sources. Baxter, Warburg and Advent did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Baxter's biopharma solutions unit supports drugmakers in the formulation, development and commercialization of drugs typically given by infusion or injection, such as biologics and vaccines. The company said dialysis operations, which are a part of Baxter's renal care unit, had become a drag on its margin.
