Analyst Gil Luria maintained his price target of $475, which is approximately 9% higher than where Microsoft stock closed on Friday. In particular, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform appear to pose the biggest threats to Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform. But Amazon Web Services is now adding nearly as much cloud business, while Google Cloud Platform's current acceleration is comparable to that of Azure's last-quarter growth rates. "While Microsoft has discussed its Maia chips, it is years behind Amazon and Google and appears to be using them only to run Azure OpenAI Services workloads. We believe this means Microsoft has been escalating an arms race it may not be able to win."

Read previewIf Qualcomm sees it through, its takeover bid of Intel would likely be the biggest in Silicon Valley history. The possibility of Intel handing its 56-year history over to a younger rival emerged last week after several reports said that California-based semiconductor firm Qualcomm had made a takeover approach. That said, not everyone is convinced that Qualcomm needs Intel — or that a buyout would be a good idea for either company. My industry survey also indicates that Qualcomm is currently in takeover talks with Intel. A Qualcomm bid for Intel could face similar regulatory obstacles to the takeover attempt Nvidia made for Arm in 2020 and later abandoned in 2022.

The White House wants to close a trade loophole exploited by Chinese discount e-retailers — a move that would have a ripple effect on at least two of our portfolio stocks: Amazon and Meta Platforms. The de minimis exemption has allowed Chinese e-commerce giants, particularly low-cost Temu and Shein, to flourish. Temu has risen in popularity in the U.S. for selling items directly from Chinese merchants at massive discounts. Temu is generally seen as a growing competitor to Amazon since its prices are often lower. Meta challenges On the other hand, the trade shift could present a challenge for Meta, which relies on advertising from e-commerce platforms.

Norma Field walks under power lines coming off of the nuclear plant on Three Mile Island (TMI), with the operational plant run by Exelon Generation, in Middletown, Pennsylvania. Constellation Energy plans to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant and will sell the power to Microsoft, demonstrating the immense power needs of the tech sector as they build out data centers to support artificial intelligence. Constellation described the agreement with Microsoft as the largest power purchase agreement that the nuclear plant operator has ever signed. Three Mile Island would be the second nuclear plant to restart operations in U.S. history. The Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan would be the first, with that plant expected to return to service at the end of 2025.

Qualcomm could sell parts of Intel to other buyers to get any deal done, the newspaper added. Intel mostly sells chips for PCs and data center servers, although Nvidia's GPUs have made serious inroads into this lucrative data center business. An "odd" fitSemianalysis chief analyst Dylan Patel said Qualcomm and Intel would be an "odd" fit. "Furthermore, Qualcomm has no ability to turn around the data center business, which is the most important one," he continued. The company's revenue has declined in recent years while rivals like Nvidia, TSMC, and Broadcom are riding the artificial intelligence wave to new heights.

Talen's surge comes on the back of its deal to sell a data center campus to Amazon Web Services and supply the facility with nuclear power from the Susquehanna station northwest of Allentown, Pennsylvania. The deal is viewed as a trailblazing agreement for the power industry, and Wall Street has taken notice. A year ago, Talen was not covered by any Wall Street analysts, according to FactSet data. And Talen's assets are located almost entirely in the PJM grid, a predominantly mid-Atlantic region where power prices are expected to explode as demand outstrips supply due in part to growing data center load. During his tenure as CEO, Grove transformed the chip company into a giant of Silicon Valley that, during the 1990s, was as important to the PC market as Microsoft. Pat Gelsinger, who has led Intel as CEO since 2021, has enacted a sweeping set of new initiatives to turn the chip company around. Its Gaudi 3 AI chip, unveiled as a rival to offerings from Nvidia and AMD, is expected to generate just $500 million in sales this year. Meanwhile, Alvin Nguyen, senior analyst at Forrester, told Business Insider that this is a big public win for Intel. Gelsinger's second headline announcement was that the company is establishing Intel Foundry as a separate subsidiary within Intel, with its own new operating board and independent directors.

Wall Street analysts are still skeptical on Intel despite its latest moves aimed at righting the ship. Shares of Intel gained more than 3% on Tuesday after the chipmaker said it would turn its foundry business into an independent unit — allowing it to raise outside capital . The analyst added that Intel's plan to establish its foundry business as an independent subsidiary was "expected and not good." "We expect Intel's EPS to be under pressure given its foundry business, which we believe has minimal chance of succeeding," he wrote. Intel shares have lagged the broader semiconductor sector year to date, losing 56% in that time.

New York CNN —Intel’s struggling chip-making business got a boost Monday from a high-profile client: Amazon. Intel Foundry and Amazon Web Services will coinvest in a custom chip design for the latter and “announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar framework,” according to a release. “Specifically, Intel Foundry will produce an AI fabric chip for AWS on Intel 18A,” Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in the statement Monday. The new deal, along with a $3 billion grant from the US government to boost domestic chip making and make chips for the US military, “demonstrates the continued progress we are making to build a world-class foundry business,” Intel said in the statement. Intel has changed its business model to try to become a global chip manufacturer to rival Taiwan’s TSMC.

AWS, along with other cloud players, has been investing heavily in infrastructure, such as data centers and Nvidia chips, in order to train and run AI models. That continues a trend from 2023, when generative AI companies raised $25.9 billion for the full year, up more than 200% from 2022. The average round for AI companies is 140% bigger this year compared with last, the data shows, while for non-AI companies the increase is only 10%. Most venture investors are bullish on the potential for generative AI to eventually create big returns at the application layer. John-David Lovelock, an analyst at Gartner and a 35-year veteran of the IT industry, sees a big opportunity for generative AI in the enterprise. Yet, in 2024, only 1% of the trillion dollars spent on software will be from businesses spending on generative AI products, he said.
