Read previewThe US job market has certainly seen better days. AdvertisementThose rate cuts will help pull the job market out of its slowdown — but likely not before the unemployment rate climbs higher, says Oliver Allen, a senior US economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. And even then, it could take time for the effects of rate cuts to fully work their way across the job market, said Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst at Bankrate. AdvertisementSlowdown in the pipelineUntil rate cuts kick in, Allen thinks the joblessness rate has even more room to climb. Central bank policymakers have kept their target interest rate at 5.25% to 5.5% for the past year, creating a yield bonanza for investors in money market funds, certificates of deposit and Treasury bills. Gundlach, speaking on CNBC's " Closing Bell " on Wednesday, said he sees the Fed enacting as much as 150 basis points worth of rate cuts in the next year, or 1.5 percentage points, which would lower the fed funds rate to 3.75% to 4.00%. As interest rates come down, cash, short-dated instruments and floating-rate debt will also see lower yields, translating to less income for investors, he added. In lieu of those bank loans, investors may want to consider migrating toward BB-rated, fixed-rate high yield bonds — high-yield issues, he said. Given the many ways lower rates can affect your finances, here are some things to consider when deciding what steps to take in response. Here’s how lower rates may affect key areas of your financial life, along with tips on what to do about it. If that proves difficult to get, see if you can transfer your balance to a credit card from a credit union or local bank that offers lower rates than the biggest banks. And because many variables determine what that factor will be, it will be hard to figure out the impact of lower interest rates. Japanese companies established Thailand’s auto industry virtually from scratch, dating back to the years after World War II. By the late 1970s, Japanese brands commanded around 90 percent of car sales in Thailand. Now Japanese automakers’ stronghold is finally being loosened by Chinese manufacturers that offer something they don’t: electric vehicles at affordable prices. The influx of Chinese brands like BYD, Great Wall Motor and SAIC Motor in the past two years is ringing alarms in Japan. In December, Srettha Thavisin, Thailand’s prime minister, traveled to Japan with a message for Japanese companies: Move quickly, invest in electric vehicles or lose out to China.

British oil giant BP on Tuesday reported stronger-than-expected net profit for the second quarter and raised its dividend despite previously warning of significantly lower refining margins. The oil and gas major posted underlying replacement cost profit, used as a proxy for net profit, of $2.8 billion for the second quarter. BP reported net profit of $2.7 billion for the first three months of the year and $2.6 billion for the second quarter of 2023. BP said earlier in the month that weak refining margins and lower oil trading results would likely dent the firm's second-quarter results by as much as $700 million. BP's net debt stood at $22.6 billion at the end of the second quarter, down from $23.7 billion compared to the same period last year.

What to do when the Fed starts cutting interest rates
  + stars: | 2024-07-27 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
New York CNN —Over the past couple of years, the Federal Reserve aggressively raised its key interest rate to a 23-year high to beat down inflation. But, realistically, how much you’ll save when the Fed lowers rates will depend on how quickly it cuts and by how much each time. Since loan amounts are substantial, this is one area where even small cuts in interest rates could make a meaningful difference in what a homebuyer will pay. A couple of quarter-point rate cuts from the Fed won’t make it meaningfully cheaper, McBride said. A few rate cuts won’t make much of a dent in today’s record-high average rate of 20.7%.

For years, China ramped up green energy production capacity, becoming the global leader in renewable energy manufacturing, from solar to wind to battery. In a second Trump administration, prices for imports from China are likely to surge for green energy producers. The view is that First Solar will benefit the most within the U.S. solar sector from greater trade restrictions, according to Baird. Ultimately, that may curtail the number of green energy startups and private companies that want to go public, Schleif said. "It's been really hard to compete with Chinese companies in any way, shape or form."

More specifically, they're taking aim at a widespread rule that requires almost every new apartment building in the US to include at least two separate stairwells. This part of local codes, they say, is an outdated safety measure that really just makes apartment units smaller, more expensive, and darker (yes, darker). City planners there sometimes call these single-stair buildings "Seattle Specials" — they simply wouldn't be possible in pretty much any other city. Almost all of Europe, as well as Asia, Mexico and South America, allows single-stair buildings of six stories or higher. Germany allows single-stair buildings to stretch to about 20 stories, while Switzerland has no such limit.

The payments company found that three in five Americans think the US is currently in a recession. Seven out of 10 Americans see today's inflation rate as a burden on their financial futures, limiting their ability to save and plan ahead. For its part, Wall Street has remained optimistic about the economy's trajectory, given that inflation has progressively come down from its pandemic highs. Although spending kept up enough to stall an official recession, Americans have gradually pulled back their buying.

It found that people generally have a strong preference for a brick-and-mortar experience when buying luxury items. The overarching theme is that many consumers haven't warmed up to shopping luxury — namely, ultra-luxe items and brands — online. For the most part, luxury brands prefer that customers would rather shop in-store.

Read previewEight years ago I moved to New York City from Boston, and it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. The size of the room was huge, especially after I had heard horror stories of tiny New York City apartments, the only catch was that the room I would be in was way above my budget. Finally, last December — after eight years of living and financially struggling in New York City — I told my mom I was over $50,000 in credit card debt and didn't know what to do. Some of them are earnest sites that want to help, and some are predatory debt consolidation or debt settlement companies. It was clear that these companies were preying on people's shame — shame that I undeniably feel for racking up so much debt.
