In NBC News’ early October national survey, just 4% of registered voters said they didn’t want to make a choice between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. One said they plan to vote for Trump, another that they are likely to vote for Harris, and another plans to not vote at all. How anyone could still be undecided a week out from a critical election can be difficult to fathom for supporters of either Trump or Harris. Eric Bush, a systems administrator from Florida, said he’s waiting until he is in the voting booth to make his final choice. But he is still weighing backing Harris, acknowledging a vote for Harris could lead to bigger-government policies that could help others.

Daniel Penny went “way too far” when he put Jordan Neely in a chokehold on a New York City subway train last year until he died, a Manhattan prosecutor told jurors Friday during opening statements in Penny’s manslaughter trial. “A chokehold is only permitted when it’s absolutely necessary and only for as long as it’s absolutely necessary,” Yoran told jurors. He talked about being hungry, thirsty and made threats about hurting people and wanting to go back to jail, which frightened people on the train, Yoran said. In addition to opening statements, jurors on Friday heard from three police officers who had responded to the subway car. Kenniff said jurors also would hear during the trial from subway riders who had feared for their lives.

The only approved treatments for Alzheimer’s disease are medications with limited effectiveness and a risk of severe, sometimes deadly, side effects. Researchers found that when the device was aimed at the right spot in the brain, it could slow the development of symptoms, such as memory loss, compared to an inactive treatment. What’s more, during the yearlong TMS trial, participants receiving the experimental treatment showed little decline in their abilities to perform the activities of daily living. That changed Friday, when tens of thousands of DACA recipients became able to sign up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act for the first time. Bortolleto said she plans to sign up government-funded health insurance as early as Friday. “There’s no white knight coming,” a federal law enforcement official told NBC News, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe the posture of federal authorities in the coming weeks, after Election Day. Law enforcement officials across the country said they believe the 2024 election will have a more sustained drumbeat of partisan rhetoric and disinformation than the 2020 election. The FBI has also set up a National Election Command Post at headquarters specifically to focus on election threats, as is standard practice in an election year. Two law enforcement officials expressed some concern that a federal response to any serious election issues could be chaotic and involve a “hodgepodge” of different state, local and federal law enforcement agencies and local election entities. In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.
