And there are definitely areas where AI chatbots could be useful — especially when it comes to business. Artificial IntimacyThe shift toward AI relationships isn't just a theoretical possibility: Some entrepreneurs and companies are already working to create chatbot-driven connections. While it has garnered a lot of attention, CarynAI isn't the first attempt at providing people with companionship through an AI chatbot. Snap recently deployed its own AI chatbot, called My AI, aimed at supplementing social interactions on the app. In researching new AI chatbots, I was struck by the missed opportunity for disconnected people to forge new connections.

Strasdin manages to deftly flesh out her narrative by drawing upon newspaper articles, censuses, ship manifests, etiquette guides, surviving letters and contemporary literature. More impressive still is the fact that she conducted the bulk of her research remotely during the pandemic, which limited her to online sources. Strasdin’s detailed explication of Victorian-era dress is sure to delight the fashion history enthusiast, but “The Dress Diary” has much wider appeal. It is a work of sociology, and a testament to fashion history as an inherently interdisciplinary field inextricably combining industry and aesthetics, technology and trade. This diary serves as a record of their very existence, and provides a glimpse into the ephemeral world inhabited by the unsung “participants in everyday life.”

And yet, the Grand Canyon remains yoked to the present in one key respect. The Colorado River, whose wild energy incised the canyon over millions of years, is in crisis. Down beneath the tourist lodges and shops selling keychains and incense, past windswept arroyos and brown valleys speckled with agave, juniper and sagebrush, the rocks of the Grand Canyon seem untethered from time. The Grand Canyon is a planetary spectacle like none other — one that also happens to host a river that 40 million people rely on for water and power. At Mile 0 of the Grand Canyon, the river is running at around 7,000 cubic feet per second, rising toward 9,000 — not the lowest flows on record, but far from the highest.

London CNN —Prince Harry will take to the witness stand Tuesday as his years-long battle against Britain’s tabloid media reaches its most dramatic stage so far. Another story discussed touched on the relationship between Harry and Prince William in 2003. Documents published in April as part of Harry’s lawsuit against NGN allege that the publisher privately reached an undisclosed settlement with Prince William over historical phone hacking claims. Officials at Kensington Palace, which represents Prince William, told CNN it does not comment on legal proceedings. Prince Harry states that his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, was aware of settlement talks.

("I'm a fucking machine," Licht told me one day, when I asked why he was skipping a meal.) A clear-the-air town hall where he gets irritated with the CNN journalist interviewing him. CNN —Barcelona Femení overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Wolfsburg 3-2 in a dramatic Women’s Champions League final and banish its disappointment from last year. The only blemish on Barcelona’s all-conquering record these past few seasons was last year’s Champions League final, as it succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Lyon, despite otherwise marauding through records and later becoming the first ever football team to win 50 consecutive league games. Saturday’s final against Wolfsburg in Eindhoven, Netherlands was a chance for redemption, but 2-0 down at half time, it seemed that Barcelona would have to wait at least another year to secure a second Women’s Champions League trophy. Legendary forward Alexandra Popp timed her run to perfection as she headed in Pajor’s pass into the box for a record-equaling fourth goal in Women’s Champions League finals. The Dow soared 700 points to end the week as traders cheered the end of the debt ceiling fight. The Senate voted to send the bill to raise to country's borrowing limit for two years to Biden's desk. Markets were also encouraged by strong nonfarm payroll data that showed employers added 339,000 jobs in May. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had warned that the US would run out of cash in early June without raising the debt ceiling. Nonfarm payroll data for May showed that employers added 339,000 jobs last month, blowing past estimates of 180,000.

[1/2] A still photograph shows what appears to be North Korea's new Chollima-1 rocket being launched in Cholsan County, North Korea, May 31, 2023 in this image released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency and taken from video. "It appears to make use of an engine that appeared in an earlier North Korean intercontinental-range ballistic missile." The Chollima-1 appears to be a medium-lift space launch vehicle intended for delivering small satellites to low earth orbit. "In this case we do have a fairly large payload fairing compared to the earlier North Korean space launch vehicles," Panda said. South Korea said it was working to recover parts of the North Korean rocket, releasing photos that showed what analysts said appeared to be a section designed to join two stages, and a liquid propellant tank inside.

Prince Mohammed last visited Jordan a year ago following years of tensions, also prompting hopes then that warmer ties would unlock more fulsome economic support. KING-IN-WAITING[1/10] Jordan's Crown Prince Hussein and Rajwa Al Saif are seen together at their royal wedding ceremony, in Amman, Jordan, June 1, 2023 in this screen grab taken from a video. At the Arab League summit in Jeddah last month, he walked alongside his father to greet Crown Prince Mohammad. Washington's desire for a stable ally in an otherwise volatile region meant it too has often turned a blind eye to Jordan's slow democratic reforms and mixed human rights record. It's the prince's wedding, not ours," said Abdullah al-Fayez, a retired servicemen living on slim savings on the outskirts of Amman.

LONDON, May 31 (Reuters) - Beyoncé's fans, collectively known as the "BeyHive," are going savage to catch a glimpse of her during her "Renaissance World Tour". Money and distance are no object when your idol beckons in 57 concerts across 40 cities in North America and 14 across Europe. SEOUL — For more than six months, Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, has seemingly been giving the world an unprecedented glimpse into his private life. The first set of photos revealed a ponytailed girl in red shoes strolling hand in hand with Mr. Kim around a Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile. Later, she’s gazing into his eyes at a celebration for weapons scientists and tenderly patting his shoulder at a military parade. State media has released the daddy-daughter images on over a dozen occasions since November, assuredly choreographed from curls to gloves. Now that the country’s routine missile tests aren’t generating the headlines he craves, Mr. Kim appears to be leveraging his daughter’s global star power.
I remember my first glimpse into the future. In August 1992, when I arrived in California as a student, I discovered during orientation that the university required all incoming students to have something called an email account. To access it, I had to call up a text-based mail client on Unix, using a series of line commands. That fall, the incoming Clinton administration announced a plan to invest billions of dollars into civilian research and technology. Now I carry in my pocket a tiny device that, in addition to everything the Classic II did, can play movies, deliver the news, give directions, send money, book airline tickets and check my royalty statements.
Wall Street's succession summer

But first, it's the summer of succession — and no, we're not talking about the TV show. Wall Street CEOs pretend that succession planning is another chore, like hashing out the annual budget or organizing an earnings call. But behind the boring press announcing their succession plans is often a story of intrigue and drama. And then, of course, there's Jamie Dimon, Wall Street's longest-serving CEO. Earlier this week, Insider highlighted 17 young analysts poised to shine.
How shredded Zuck celebrated Memorial Day

Zuckerberg said he did the "Murph challenge" on Memorial Day. On Monday, Zuck posted a glimpse of his Memorial Day workout on — of course — Facebook. "I try to do the Murph challenge with the girls every Memorial Day as a tradition to honor those who defended us," Zuckerberg wrote. The Murph challenge, which is also a benchmark CrossFit workout, was named after Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005. You go, Murph challenge Zuck.
MONACO, May 28 (Reuters) - Formula One rivals hope to discover some of dominant Red Bull's most closely guarded secrets from photographs of the underside of Sergio Perez's car after it was craned off the Monaco Grand Prix circuit. The floor is the most aerodynamically sensitive area of the car, with ground-effect sculpting responsible for much of the performance. Monaco marshals typically use cranes to clear stranded cars from the metal-fenced track because of the close confines and lack of runoff. "So the teams will be all over those kinds of photographs. "There’s a lot of very excited aerodynamicists up and down the pitlane looking at all of that."
Developments in cancer research will be in the spotlight as the American Society of Clinical Oncology hosts the world's biggest cancer research conference in Chicago, starting Thursday. The pair has already has won regulatory approval for Enhertu for metastatic HER2-low breast cancer, but the companies are also studying its use in a variety other HER2 tumors in breast cancers. Lilly's drug, Verzenio, is used in high-risk patients with HR-positive HER2-negative breast cancer that is more likely to reoccur and has already breached the patient's lymph nodes. In a research note earlier this month, Guggenheim analyst Seamus Fernandez said Kisqali is already taking market share from Pfizer's Ibrance in metastatic breast cancer. Merck's Keytruda is also being watched for what benefits it could offer early-stage lung cancer patients .
Some popular big cities are losing residents, US Postal Service change-of-address requests indicate. Requests made in 2023 also show that smaller spots outside big cities have tended to gain residents. Smaller spots outside larger urban hubs, meanwhile, are attracting more residents than they're losing. Many people move over the summer to avoid pulling kids out of school midyear, so end-of-year change-of-address data may shed light on other patterns. Also, bigger cities are more likely to both lose and gain people because of their larger populations; the USPS doesn't adjust its numbers according to population.
Do they shoot forward in time, stealing a page from the legendary finale of “Six Feet Under”? Maybe offer a glimpse of the future with that handsome sociopath and potential president they have put in power? While I usually have a vague idea of an ending when I start writing a play, I don’t want everything set in stone. A great ending can be about transformation, in which our central character escapes, or finds true love, or discovers a profound truth and achieves inner wisdom (as in “Mad Men,” except the profound truth was about Coca-Cola). Or it can be about justice, which rains down on those who deserve it and ruins those who don’t.
A world in three islands on the Mediterranean
  + stars: | 2023-05-25 | by ( Pavlo Fedykovych | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +16 min
CNN —In the middle of the Mediterranean Sea lies a small country made up of three inhabited islands and irresistible allure. Across its three inhabited islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino – you’ll find every sun-soaked aspect of the perfect vacation. The solution: Marsaskala, towards the southeastern tip of Malta island. Mellieħa Bay and St. Paul’s BayBugibba is a classic seaside resort town in St. Paul's Bay. The population is a modest two people, there are no cars, and no signs of globalization – just the untouched Mediterranean.
While the shortage has more or less abated, it did highlight the fragile nature of our food system and the huge importance of food security. "Between 702 and 828 million people were affected by hunger in 2021," The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report said. In June 2022, scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, listed several sources of food that could play a big role in future diets. They include seaweed; cacti like the prickly pear; a type of wild coffee able to cope with far warmer temperatures than Arabica coffee; and enset, also known as the false banana. A fruit tree may also be perennial, he noted, "but it only produces its fruit at a certain time of year — so you either need to consume it then or you need to store it."
