CNN —US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrived in Beijing Thursday ahead of high-stakes meetings with senior Chinese officials. The treasury secretary intends “to talk about the bilateral economic relationship, raise issues of concern, and discuss ways we can work together on global challenges” during her meeting with Li, a senior Treasury official told reporters traveling with Yellen. On Friday, Yellen will also meet with her former counterpart, Liu He, in what the Treasury official said could be “seen as a meeting of old friends.”“They were former counterparts. I will say that definitively,” the official told reporters. Yellen will be in China until July 9, according to the Department of the Treasury.

BEIJING, July 6 (Reuters) - China hosted two Russian warships that had earlier sailed past Taiwan and Japan, and the vessels are expected to hold a joint drill with the Chinese navy during their visit, demonstrating the enduring military cooperation between the two countries. The two frigates - Gromkiy and Sovershenniy - made port at the financial hub of Shanghai on Wednesday, Chinese state television reported. The same ships, which belong to the Pacific fleet of the Russian Navy, passed through waters near democratically governed Taiwan at the end of June. China and Russia have pledged stronger military ties, and on Monday, China's Defence Minister Li Shangfu met with the head of the Russian navy, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, in Beijing. Gerasimov was quoted by Tass news agency as saying that the two sides will continue to expand their military cooperation.

TAIPEI, July 6 (Reuters) - Foxconn Chairman Liu Young-way held talks with senior and mid-level employees at Japan's Sharp (6753.T) this week and discussed topics including the relationship between the two companies, the Japanese electronics maker said Thursday. Foxconn (2317.TW), the world's largest contract electronics maker, reported a 56% plunge in first-quarter net profit, due to a T$17.3 billion ($553 million) writedown related to its 34% stake in Japanese electronics maker Sharp. During the meetings, which were attended by more than 100 employees, Liu talked about issues including the companies' relationship, Sharp's global positioning and the future of the Japanese company, Sharp said in a statement. Sharp reported in May a full-year loss of $1.9 billion after writing down the value of its panel display business and a swathe of other assets. Following the Japanese company's first net loss in six years, Liu said he would work harder on the management of Sharp but did not offer details.

[1/6] U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrives at Beijing Capital International Airport in Beijing, China, Thursday, July 6, 2023. Both sides are sceptical that Yellen's visit will be able to take much heat out of U.S.-China ties, however, with officials accepting that both countries have placed safeguarding national security above economic ties. Yellen will address "unfair" practices by China, including recent punitive actions against U.S. firms and market access barriers, the official added. On Friday she will meet China's Premier Li Qiang and former economy tsar Liu He, who is widely seen as a close confidant of President Xi Jinping. They come ahead of a possible meeting between President Joe Biden and Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering scheduled for November in San Francisco.

Gallium prices in China have dropped 12% this year, pressured by its slowing economy. China's germanium ingot price has advanced only 1% to 7,250 yuan per kg since Monday. Overseas price offers are rising much faster, amid fears that Beijing may use the permitting system to restrict shipments. The Chinese government enforces export controls that do not target any particular country," spokesperson Shu Jueting told a weekly press conference. Chinese officials are concerned about the Biden administration's plans to limit U.S. companies' China investments and what they see as moves to decouple the two economies. In 2022, top importers of China's gallium products were Japan, Germany and the Netherlands, news website Caixin said, citing customs data. Top importers of germanium products were Japan, France, Germany and the United States, it said. The buyers were anticipating it could take as long as two months to obtain export permits. Jefferies analysts said they saw the export controls as China's second and bigger countermeasure after the Micron ban. "If this action doesn't change the U.S.-China dynamics, more rare earth export controls should be expected."

“We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government,” Greene said in a tweet on President’s Day this year. Blue state governors, legislatures and mayors might respond to such an offensive in forceful ways difficult to predict today. The Republican-appointed majority on the US Supreme Court has encouraged the red state social offensive with decisions that stripped away national rights – most prominently on abortion and voting. “Given the make-up of the courts, it’s difficult for blue states to be hopeful about this,” says Kettl. “The United States does not get to assume that it lasts forever.”

New orders from overseas customers decreased in June at the fastest rate in four months reflecting feeble demand from China, the Japan PMI survey showed. It's the only advanced economy in the world that doesn't have federal laws requiring paid leave for vacations or sick time, and as a result, many rely on policies that vary by employer. When left up to businesses, the average American worker gets just 11 days of paid vacation in their first year at a company, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a culture that prizes productivity, even workers who do get vacation days often leave them on the table. Krys Elexandra, 26, lived in Arizona and moved to Germany 18 months ago to explore Europe and because of her strong interest in German culture. Elexandra is entitled to 30 paid days off in Germany and was surprised to find it's "extremely easy" to request time off.

Heart-Shape Gems Get Lots of Love

From heart emojis to hands held to form a heart, heart motifs abound at the moment, and the jewelry world has gotten the memo: heart-shape stones seem to be everywhere. The large heart-shape diamond now worn by Lauren Sánchez — reportedly estimated at 25 to 30 carats and the ring that Jeff Bezos used to propose marriage, made headlines recently during the couple’s cruise around the Mediterranean. It had some competition in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where Natalie Portman honored emerging talent at the Trophée Chopard event in a blue Dior gown that matched her Chopard necklace of 25 sapphire hearts, totaling 119.95 carats, with each one trimmed in diamonds. Just days later, Gigi Hadid was photographed on the red carpet in a Messika Toi & Moi ring that juxtaposed two sparkling hearts: a 7.06-carat pink diamond and a 16.18-carat yellow diamond, each accentuated with white diamonds.

Half of wedding vendors say higher costs of goods, from food to flowers to gas, are driving them to increase their service prices. A growing share of couples are adding cash funds to their wedding registries — some even earmarked specifically to help pay for the wedding itself. But with their surprise wedding winnings, Moore estimates their wedding day will be valued at more than $16,500. Usually, couples who win the free services are asked to promote the businesses on social media, or to appear in their marketing materials online and elsewhere. The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that affirmative action admission policies at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina are unconstitutional. The decision means universities can no longer consider race in addition to other factors when admitting students, ending 40-plus years of affirmative action policies intended to achieve greater racial diversity at top-tier colleges. In response to the Court's decision, students, alumni and educators have spoken up about the need for more work to make universities more accessible to students who come from historically disadvantaged communities. Colleges and universities have been preparing for what an end to race-conscious admissions could mean for their admissions processes, beginning with students applying to schools this fall. Here's how the college admissions process could change in the coming months and years.

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that affirmative action policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina that consider a student's race for college admissions are unconstitutional. The court's decision is not surprising but "disappointing" nonetheless, says Julian Taylor, a rising junior and member of the Affirmative Action Coalition at UNC Chapel Hill. China's economic recovery is practically doomed, experts from the Council of Foreign Relations said in an op-ed. The Chinese government has launched a plan for consumption-led growth, meaning the nation will shift away from investment. Meanwhile, 43% of China's economy is driven by investment – about double the US's long-run average of 22%. Experts have warned of trouble for China's economy as it sees a so-far disappointing economic rebound. Investors, meanwhile, have pulled their cash out of China at a faster pace as they lose faith in its grand economic reopening.
