The free publicity, complete with an online post by Donald Trump, spurred a surge in record sales. I recently spent two days with Gangstagrass, a band that is making music that actually unites us, and reflecting on why it isn’t better known. A version of the group produced the theme song of the TV drama “Justified.” (The song, “Long Hard Times to Come,” was nominated for an Emmy in 2010.) The multiracial band was created by Rench, a Brooklyn-based musician and producer. When he isn’t making music, Mr. Whitener is a stay-at-home dad.

It is no surprise that Erika Elliott, the executive artistic director at SummerStage, celebrates New York through music. “There’s this cathartic, exciting and energetic feeling in an all-green public space when the audience and the artist and the stage all come together.”The music festival, run by the City Parks Foundation, started in 1986. This summer there are nearly 80 SummerStage shows in 13 parks across the city. The season, which started on June 3 with a performance by the band Hippo Campus in Central Park, ends Oct. 2 in Coney Island with the Yeshiva Boys Choir. This article is also a weekly newsletter. To celebrate hip-hop’s birthday, the Projects and Collaborations team asked Mahogany L. Browne, Lincoln Center’s first-ever poet-in-residence and an acclaimed author, to write a love letter to the genre, composed entirely of lyrics both oft recited and obscure. In the resulting interactive piece, which is full of stunning archival photography, we’ve annotated the lyrics with information about the artists, songs and their significance in the history of hip-hop. “Each of the audio clips represents a voice, a feeling, a moment in the 50-year evolution of the music. “From the start we knew the conceit was to use lyrics and this found poetry structure, but how does that look on the page?” Fang said.

Was Hip-Hop Really Invented 50 Years Ago?

The music world has been gearing up for Aug. 11, which will be widely celebrated as the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop. The story goes like this: On that date in 1973, in the rec room of an apartment building on Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, a teenager named Cindy Campbell threw a party, charging admission to raise money so that she could buy clothes for the coming school year. This gathering, one of many that her brother Clive would DJ as “Kool Herc,” is counted by many as the birth of the yet-nameless genre, in part because Herc is said to have honed its foundational musical impulse there.

The Promise of Prison Music - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2023-08-03 | by ( Maurice Chammah | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
For wardens running bigger and fuller prisons, letting in people and technology was one more avoidable security risk. The racial prejudice that underpinned the War on Drugs infected how a lot of prison music was perceived. Throughout the 1990s, a rising victims’ rights movement framed any creativity behind bars as a moral affront to crime survivors. Much of society lost interest in hearing the voices of people inside prisons, but they didn’t stop creating and often they used music as a form of resistance. There are hopeful signs that our prison system could return to seeing music as a way to maintain hope inside — and prepare society to accept the people they’re going to release.

More and more Americans are choosing to move away from the traditional burial process after they die. As the 2022 NFDA Cremation & Burial Report explained, "Typically, cremations cost 40% less than funerals with burials." As of 2022, the aquamation process, also known as alkaline hydrolysis, is legal in 24 states and legislation to legalize it is circulating in several other states. But while these two innovative funeral homes offer their price lists on their websites, they are not required to. The potential rule change is also being monitored by the Funeral Consumers Alliance, which has been pushing for the change for decades.

It may have weighed twice as much as a blue whale because of its dense bones. That's nearly as heavy as a Boeing 747 or twice as much as a blue whale, which typically weighs between 72 and 180 tons. That means the other fossils retrieved from the area may not offer clues to how P. colossus lived. A 3D model shows what a complete skeleton of Perucetus colossus would look like, above a blue whale and smaller Cynthiacetus peruvianus skeletons. No limbs were found near the P. colossus skeleton, but fossilized evidence suggests it likely had both front and back legs.
