Bret: One of the most interesting recent stories in The Times is an analysis of undecided voters, and their concerns about Trump and Harris. One of most important findings — one that should really concern the Harris campaign — is that a high proportion of undecided voters are young, low-income and Black or Latino. The concerns about Trump are familiar: “too extreme,” “angered easily” and so on. But some of the concerns about Harris were more surprising. The other part, I think, is that Harris hasn’t done enough to reassure undecided voters that she’s decisive, knowledgeable and well-advised.

The Houston Astros will not appear in the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2016 after being eliminated by the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. Not including the pandemic-shortened 2020 year, that’s the fewest number of wins the Astros have had since missing the postseason entirely in 2016. From 2017-23, not only did Houston appear in the ALCS every year, it made the World Series four times, winning twice and losing twice. The Astros’ run of championship league series appearances came under the specter of one of Major League Baseball’s most notorious scandals. The Astros were revealed to be using the sign-stealing system from as early as 2016 into the 2018 season — which encompassed their 2017 World Series win.

CNN —Sean “Diddy” Combs may soon be facing new allegations from over 100 men and women who’ve obtained legal representation and plan to file civil suits against the embattled media mogul in the coming weeks, according to Houston-based attorney Tony Buzbee. “As Mr. Combs’ legal team has emphasized, he cannot address every meritless allegation in what has become a reckless media circus. Since last November, Combs has been hit with 12 civil suits, 11 of which directly accuse him of sexual assault. A source previously told CNN that the majority of accusers who filed civil lawsuits had met with federal investigators during their months-long investigation. In March, Combs’ residences in Los Angeles and Miami were searched by the Department of Homeland Security Investigations.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration said Monday it is making asylum restrictions at the southern border even tougher, as it’s increasingly eager to show voters uneasy over immigration that it is taking a hard stance on border security. The new rules, which toughen restrictions announced in June, bar migrants from being granted asylum when U.S. officials deem that the southern border is overwhelmed. But the administration has touted its asylum restrictions, saying they have led to serious drops in the number of migrants coming to the southern border. A senior administration official said Monday that the longer timeline was necessary to make sure that drops in immigration are sustained and not due to a one-time event. “It’s absolutely reasonable to want robust systems in place to know who is coming into our country, and certainly, the surges we’ve seen at the southern border have been unsustainable,” she said.

Richard Branson, the billionaire founder of Virgin Group, has turned his money and focus toward a very personal new project: DyslexicU, the first free online university for dyslexic thinkers. Branson said that while he wasn’t interested in school subjects such as geometry and applied mathematics, dyslexia helped him focus on his strengths. “If you’re a dyslexic person, you can go on and take one of the courses and learn more about how incredibly successful dyslexic people have used their dyslexic thinking to turbocharge their careers,” Branson’s co-founder Kate Griggs told NBC News. That’s why Maricopa County has spent over $864,000 in federal funds and more than $3 million in county funds to bolster its election security and processes over the past four years. Officials readily shared their worries with CNN, citing death threats, harassment, baseless lawsuits, onerous public-records requests and various security threats spurred by false claims about voter fraud. Amid these challenges, budgets for election security have been squeezed in several ways. Thousands of election workers across the country have reported receiving harassing, offensive or hostile communications, including since the 2022 midterms, according to the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force. As recently as Tuesday, Trump threatened to prosecute and imprison election officials if he wins in November, as he cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming election.
