Beyoncé announces new hair care line ‘Cécred’
  + stars: | 2024-02-07 | by ( Leah Dolan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Beyoncé has revealed she will be launching a hair care line on February 20. Tina Knowles influence on her daughters career has been far-reaching — one of the first music videos Destiny’s Child shot was for their first number one hit “Bills, Bills, Bills,” (1999), a tale of a disillusioned, independent woman triumphantly cutting off the deadweight of her boyfriend. That is power.”Beyoncé said she "always dreamt" of carrying on her mother's legacy in the hair and beauty industry. Kevin Mazur/WireImage/Getty ImagesWhile details about what products Cécred will offer are yet to be shared, a trademark request filed in the summer of 2022 clears the company for production of hair care preparations, candles, vitamin supplements, electric hair styling tools, combs, hair accessories, pillow cases and four other goods and services categories. In 2019, Tracee Ellis Ross launched Pattern, a now-award winning natural hair line focused on “curl conscious and textured” customers.

The guilty verdict on Tuesday against the mother of a Michigan teenager who murdered four students in 2021 in the state’s deadliest school shooting is likely to ripple across the country’s legal landscape as prosecutors find themselves weighing a new way to seek justice in mass shootings. But, legal experts say, don’t expect a rush of similar cases. Ethan pleaded guilty in 2022 and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Ms. Crumbley was convicted on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each student her son killed. She faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, and sentencing is scheduled for April 9.

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Carol Kane really wanted to work with Jason Schwartzman, but the opportunity would require her to step a little outside of her comfort zone. Her character, Carla, is a retired music teacher who wants to get her bat mitzvah. Schwartzman’s Ben is her former student, and currently a cantor, who agrees to help (reluctantly at first). “The idea sounded pretty fascinating,” Kane, 71, said in a recent phone interview. And working with Schwartzman on the complex, loving relationship between Carla and Ben was as good as she hoped.

It’s a good day when Frank Lee, a retired chef, can slip out to the hardware store, fairly confident that his wife, Robin, is in the hands of reliable help. He struggled to care for her largely on his own. “As Mom’s condition got more difficult to navigate, he was just handling it,” said Jesse Lee, the youngest of the couple’s three adult children. “It was getting harder and harder.”“Something had to change, or they would both perish.”Frank Lee’s search for trustworthy home health aides — an experience that millions of American families face — has often been exhausting and infuriating, but he has persisted. He didn’t entirely trust the care his wife would get in an assisted-living facility.

What to Cook After You’ve Cooked Everything

You’ve consumed enough butter, starch and sugar to consider bearlike hibernation for the next week. But would you consider this ginger-scallion steamed fish (above) for dinner? Ali Slagle adapted the recipe from one developed by the chef Connie Chung, of Milu in New York City. Chung’s recipe is itself an adaptation of a classic Cantonese banquet dish, simplified for the fast-casual needs of her restaurant. Hers uses cubed fish steamed with a mixture of soy sauce and a ginger-scallion stock.

Thanksgiving may be a time for Americans to come together, but opinion is divided over what's on the crowded dinner table. We mostly agree on the deliciousness of pumpkin pie, say, but are split over the eternal turkey question of dark meat versus white meat. Americans 45 or older are especially likely to call turkey the best thing on the Thanksgiving table (39%), while younger adults who agree come in at 24%. One-third of U.S. adults who will celebrate Thanksgiving say that's their preferred dessert. Slightly fewer than half of men (46%) who plan to celebrate Thanksgiving say they will do hardly any or none of the cooking.

It was costing us $8,000 out of pocket to have people come into my mom’s house to help her, and that was only eight hours a day. She was in rehab for the maximum number of days that Medicare will cover and couldn’t return home. Because she owned a house, had two rentals, savings and two cars, she had to pay long-term care costs out of her pocket. The state says we still owe close to $20,000 for the year Medicaid paid for her nursing home. It was awful — personally all the time and energy and money to do this for her — and it was great.

ON AN OCTOBER AFTERNOON during Paris fashion week, model Gigi Hadid was spotted in a beat-up leather jacket. Did she pull it from the mother lode of vintage clothes in her famous-model mom’s closet? The pre-distressed bomber (above) came from reliable chain store Mango and can be yours for $600, according to the brand’s website. CNN —Retired Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton experienced a “scary setback” in her fight against a rare form of pneumonia this week, after showing remarkable progress towards recovery just days ago, her daughter said Wednesday night. Retton is still in the intensive care unit and is “really exhausted” after the setback, her daughter Shayla Kelley Schrepfer said in a video posted to Instagram. We were so excited, seeing so much progress, and then yesterday we had a pretty scary setback,” Schrepfer said. Earlier in the week, Schrepfer said that although 55-year-old Retton still needed intensive care, her breathing was becoming stronger, and she no longer had to rely so heavily on machines. The family did not specify the type of rare pneumonia her mother is diagnosed with.

These Amphibians Have a Taste for Their Mom’s Skin

When born, baby caecilians — legless amphibians that look like a mash-up of a snake and a worm — use their tiny hook-shaped teeth to scrape off their mother’s skin and feast. The flakes are dead but extra fatty and nutrient-rich, and within three months the infant squirmers have grown into independent teenagers. According to a study published in May, skin-feeding allows mothers to pass on their unique microbiomes and possibly inoculate their offspring’s immune systems — the first known instance of microbiome transmission among amphibians. “It’s a remarkably weird thing,” said David Blackburn, the curator of herpetology at the Florida Museum and author of the study. Very few amphibians are known to care for their children — most frog and salamander species tend to lay their eggs and leave once they hatch — but caecilians have evolved sophisticated parenting strategies.

When it comes to male loneliness, social isolation hits dads particularly hard, author Shannon Carpenter writes. I’ve also experienced what has been called the male loneliness epidemic, and many dads tell me it has reached into fatherhood. The biggest question I get asked by fathers is how to find connection and friendship. How we think about fathers and fatherhoodToo often, fathers are portrayed as unnecessary idiots that complicate parenting rather than adding to the family. “We have to change the story of fatherhood,” Reeves said.
